NYSEG Project Will Bring Benefits, But NYSEG Failed to Communicate

By John T. Ryan

For the past several weeks, Peru residents have watched NYSEG contractors installing massive 70 ft. poles (15 ft. are underground) adjacent to one of our most highly traveled streets, the Bear Swamp Rd. Many residents have had questions about the nature of the work which has caused traffic delays, while property owners have expressed concern about their property being damaged. Other than writing to the residents being directly impacted, NYSEG has been silent as to the nature of the project.

Contacted by the Peru Gazette, Ridge Harris, Eastern New York Communications Manager for Avangrid, NYSEG’s parent company, described the project. “NYSEG is performing work to improve the electric system for customers in the area along Bear Swamp Road. Crews are working on upgrading transmission equipment in an effort to enhance the reliability of the system and better strengthen it against harsher, more frequently occurring weather events. In addition, the new transmission equipment will better accommodate the system’s capacity needs. The project will improve the electrical system by replacing existing transmission facilities, some of which dated back to the 1930s, including new poles and wires, including the installation of a new shield wire to provide greater protection from lightning strikes. Customers can call the project line at 833-551-4200 with questions.”

The project has damaged some residents’ property. At tonight’s Town Board meeting Town Supervisor Brandy McDonald said he received four calls from concerned residents. He responded by calling NYSEG at least six times. No one returned his calls.

Charis Duffina’s property at the corner of the Bear Swamp Rd. and Moore Dr. appears to have sustained the most damage. In October, NYSEG informed Duffina by letter that she might experience a temporary disruption of service; however, NYSEG did not tell her that heavy construction trucks would invade her front lawn and damage her property.

After the Peru Gazette sent photos of Duffina’s lawn damage to Ridge Harris he responded, “The construction work is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2021, with additional site restorations taking place in the spring, once ground conditions are better suited for grading and seeding.”

Today a NYSEG representative also called Duffina to apologize for not being in contact with her. He assured her that NYSEG would repair the damage as soon as weather conditions permit.

Editor’s Note: Charis Duffina is related to the author of this story; however, the story was initiated prior to the author noticing the extensive damage to Duffina’s property.

Local Dec.14 COVID-19 Report: Lab-confirmed positive +95 (Approx. 25% at Clinton Correctional), Recovered +63, Active 124, Tested 2,751+

Since our 12/11 update, 95 additional lab-confirmed COVID-19 positive cases have been reported and 63 individuals have moved to recovered. We continue to see many close contacts of positive cases becoming positive, as well as many new cases associated with small gatherings and “informal” interactions with friends and family members. In addition, approximately 25% of new cases are inmates at Clinton Correctional Facility. CCHD continues to advocate for our community, but understand that CCHD does not oversee or regulate State Correctional Facilities. In addition, guidelines for essential workers (such as the ability to work while under quarantine), are set by NYS, not CCHD.
This holiday season has and will continue to look very different from those in the past. We continue to encourage all residents to take appropriate precautions, including wearing a facemask, watching your distance (maintaining 6 feet from others), washing your hands often, staying home when sick, avoiding crowds and gatherings, and reducing your contact with others outside of your household as much as possible.

Stewart’s Shops Holiday Match Totals Exceed $1 million and Going Strong with 11 Collection Days Left!

December 14, 2020 — Despite people using less cash, a national coin shortage and customers staying home more, Stewart’s Shops is happy to report that the Holiday Match Program is going strong and has hit the $1 million mark; and there’s 11 collections days left. As of Sunday, December 13th, donations collected total $525,104 and with the Stewart’s match, that’s over $1,050,000!

The Stewart’s Holiday Match Program has no administrative fees and donates 100% of donations received to charities in their market areas. The company even matches each donation dollar for dollar and has been doing so for the past 34 years, raising over $30 million for local charities.

Holiday Match funds are collected from Thanksgiving to Christmas Day in each of the 338 shops. Local childrens’ organizations are encouraged to apply for funding online at stewartsshops.com. The deadline for submission is January 31, 2021. All groups applying must be locally based, benefit children under 18, and be a qualified, charitable 501c3 organization. A listing of all the local organizations that received funds last season is available online.

What to do if you are in close contact with a COVID-19 diagnosed person

At this time, nothing different. You should continue to follow the same recommended everyday practices—wear a face mask, watch your distance around others (keep a distance of 6 feet from others), wash your hands often, avoid crowds and gatherings, stay home when you’re sick, and monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19.
Why?
– Person A is a confirmed case, diagnosed with COVID-19. Person A is required to be in isolation.
– Person B is a contact of the case (Person A). They have been in close or proximate contact of Person A and are required to be in quarantine.
– Person C (this is you!) is a contact of a contact. Unless Person B has or develops symptoms of COVID-19, or tests positive for COVID-19, Person C is NOT subject to quarantine.
