Peru’s Middle and High Schools Continue Remote Instruction

The Peru Central School District will continue to provide REMOTE INSTRUCTION FOR THE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL from Thursday, November 19 to Tuesday, November 24, 2020.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school nurse or building principal.
Peru Central School District regrets to announce its first confirmed positive COVID-19 case. The District is working closely with the Clinton County Department of Health. After careful consideration, the District has elected to keep the Middle/High School on a fully remote schedule through Thanksgiving break. The Elementary Schools (both the intermediate and primary) will remain open at this time. We have given the data the Health Department has requested and will continue to work through the process with them.
Officials from the Health Department asked that families not contact their office to solicit information as this will delay their outreach efforts. Rather, the health department will be directly contacting any individuals who will need to quarantine as soon as possible.
Again, the Peru Central School District will continue to provide REMOTE INSTRUCTION FOR THE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL from Thursday, November 19 to Tuesday, November 24, 2020.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Nov. 18th COVID-19 Update

November 18, 2020.
After Canadian Thanksgiving, on October 12, Canada saw a major spike in COVID cases. It is our deep concern that the same thing will happen here. For that reason, I have continued to raise the alarm about the risk of COVID spreading in smaller indoor settings — so-called “living room spread” — including at holiday dinners.
We all wish the pandemic was over and we didn’t have to worry about it this holiday season. Sadly and very clearly that’s not the reality — on the contrary, COVID is getting worse. So I am asking all New Yorkers again: Be smart and help us avoid a Thanksgiving spike. That means having Thanksgiving with your immediate household only, not attending Thanksgiving dinners with over ten people, and taking all the recommended health precautions. The best way to show your thanks and love this year is to stay apart. A small Thanksgiving dinner, or one over Zoom, is no less meaningful a way to reflect on our blessings and mark a great American tradition.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. The positivity rate in the micro-cluster focus areas dropped slightly to 4.73 percent. Excluding these areas, it was 3.10 percent. Of the 154,434 tests reported yesterday, 5,294, or 3.43 percent, were positive. Total hospitalizations rose to 2,202. Sadly, we lost 35 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. New York will modify micro-cluster focus zones in response to updated metrics. Part of Erie County’s Yellow Zone will transition to an Orange Zone. Parts of Niagara County and the Bronx will go into Yellow Zones. There will be an expanded Yellow Zone in Queens. Meanwhile, due to improvements, the Yellow Zones in Broome County and Orange County will be removed, and the Brooklyn cluster’s Orange Zone will transition to a Yellow Zone. These changes go into effect Friday for businesses and Monday for schools. 
3. If you get a call from NYS Contact Tracing, pick up. Contact tracers are working around the clock to trace clusters and inform people who have been in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID. How can you help? Simply by picking up the phone. If your caller ID says “NYS Contact Tracing,” pick up and help New York stop the spread. (Tracers will never ask for your Social Security Number or financial information; if someone does, they are not an official tracer and you should hang up.)
4. Northeastern colleges are asked to provide testing for students before students leave for Thanksgiving break. Today, I was joined by the governors of New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Massachusetts in recommending that residential colleges in our respective states provide testing prior to sending students home for Thanksgiving. Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: The Little Shelter Animal Rescue in Suffolk County is celebrating its 93rd anniversary this year. Instead of a fundraising gala, they are expanding two charitable programs. The first program aids families who are struggling to provide for their pets’ needs, delivering them pet food and other goods so that they don’t need to surrender their pets to shelters. The second, a soup kitchen, primarily serves seniors and disabled individuals. During the pandemic, volunteers coordinated no-contact delivery to protect both the staff and the pet owners.

Peru High School Students Adopting Families For Christmas

NYSPHSAA Winter Sports Updates
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has announced the start date for high-risk winter sports (basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling) will be moved to Jan. 4, 2021.

Until authorization is granted by state officials, NYSPHSAA member schools are not permitted to participate in sports determined to be high risk by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
Low and moderate risk winter sports (bowling, gymnastics, indoor track & field, skiing, and swimming & diving) will be permitted to begin on Nov. 30 as previously determined by NYSPHSAA.

Plattsburgh Clothing and Food Drive
The Plattsburgh City Police Department is collecting non-perishable food items until Thursday November 19 at the following locations:

Since many of you might be celebrating Thanksgiving a little differently because of the pandemic, I created a list of businesses offering Thanksgiving meals this year.

Local Nov. 18th COVID-19 Report: Lab-confirmed positive +9, Recovered +10, Active -1, Tested +242

COVID-19 is in our community! All residents are urged to:
– Wear a face mask.
– Keep a physical distance (6 feet) from others.
– Wash your hands often.
– Avoid crowds and gatherings.
– Stay home when you’re sick.
– Get your flu shot.
Since our 11/17 update, 9 additional individuals have tested positive and 10 individuals have recovered. A virtual media conference is being planned for Thursday, November 19 at 11:00—details to follow.

The Syracuse Post Standard is reporting the Tops Friendly Markets in limiting purchases of the following items:

Tops said it would limit the following items to one purchase per customer (list as of Monday, 11/16):

  • Toilet paper multipacks
  • Paper towel multipacks
  • Household cleaners
  • Disinfectant sprays
  • Disinfectant wipes

Tops is limiting the following to two per shopper:

  • Baby wipes
  • Oatmeal
  • Peanut butter
  • Sugar, all brands and all sizes
  • Liquid hand soap
  • Paper napkins
  • Kitchen trash bags
  • Freezer bags
  • Storage bags
  • Paper plates
  • Disposable rubber/latex or nitrile gloves

“As we continue to best serve you and our community, we are working diligently to get the products you need on the shelves as quickly as possible,” Tops’ website says. “Manufacturers are trying to meet high demand right now for household products like paper, detergents, cleaners, and other essentials like bread, canned and frozen foods. At times, we may be temporarily out of something. Or we have to limit the number of items you can purchase so that we can serve all customers.”

Historical Monument Awaits Reinstallation at Peru Dock

Nov. 17, 2020 – News from the Clinton County Historical Association – As of 10:15 this morning, the Battle of Valcour-Benedict Arnold monument on Route 9 south of Plattsburgh, erected in 1928 by the Saranac Chapter of the DAR, is in the protective hands of Doug McCabe of the DEC and CCHA Past President Roger Harwood waiting for reinstallation at the Peru Dock as the centerpiece of the historic half ship’s wheel designed by the DEC. The monument’s entire bottom section was buried and was recovered in one piece. We anticipate that restoring and rebuilding the monument to its original stature will be easier as a result of the excellent and professional job done by the Adirondack Memorials and DOT staff. After the move, Roger shared a note on its history. Everyone involved was impressed by the monument and pleased to be involved in the move. We will document the restoration process and rededicate the monument when it finally stands in its new location.
The move was necessary as it was unsafe for the public to stop and observe the monument. At one point the top of the monument was knocked off its pedestal when hit by a truck. The resulting installation of a ‘guard rail’ for the protection of the monument reduced the space for parking for those who wanted to view the monument. Additionally, over the years, the bottom section of the monument was hidden behind the fill and stone deposited to maintain monument stability due to high water, winter ice damage and major storms.
For many years, the mission of the Saranac Chapter of the DAR has been to move the monument to a location that would be safe for both the viewers and the monument itself.
