Bassmaster Elite Series Has Safely Come, Gone and Left an Impact State and County approved fishing tournament went off successfully!

From the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau

With approval from New York State and the Clinton County Health Department, the City of Plattsburgh and Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, a division of the North Country Chamber of Commerce, was happy to host the 2020 Bassmaster Elite Series on Lake Champlain last weekend. Despite the limitations and change in structure because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, this event, which in normal circumstances brings $1.5-$2 million to the host community, still was estimated to have an economic impact of $750,000-$1,000,000 – a nice impact on our community in a time when it is needed the most.

Along with the monetary impact it brought, all 4 days of the Elite Series tournament was broadcasted live on ESPN 2, ESPN 3 and Bassmaster.com. Coverage like this showcases the area to a much broader market, which will in turn have a future impact of new visitors wanting to explore the beauty of the Adirondack Coast and Lake Champlain.

The tournament could not have gone off as successfully as it did without the work and support of:

 Representative Elise Stefanik – helped to obtain the OK from the State of Vermont to fish in Vermont waters on Lake Champlain without triggering Vermont state quarantine requirements.

 Clinton County Health Department and Empire State Development – gave support and guidance through the safety planning process, aiding in testing requirements, answering questions and more.

 Plattsburgh Boat Basin – for providing space for the event and staffing support when needed.

 Bassmaster Organization – for going above and beyond following the guidelines set by the state, while keeping the health and safety of our community top priority.

“The Bassmaster Elite tournament was a thorough success in every respect, starting with safety and then including the quality of the competition, the national media promotion which you can’t put a value on and bringing some much-needed business at a challenging time to our hotels, campgrounds and restaurants,” states Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce. “Most of all. it was a tribute to North Country partnership with everyone collaborating to guarantee a wholly safe and successful event, including Clinton County and the County Health Department, the City of Plattsburgh, the outstanding team at Bassmaster, our partners at the state and the Chamber’s Visitors Bureau staff, among others. Congratulations and thank you to all involved.”

Stefanik Statement on Trump Administration Reinstating Tariffs on Imports of Non-alloyed Aluminum from Canada

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released the below statement following the Trump Administration’s decision to reinstate the 10% tariffs on imports of non-alloyed aluminum from Canada:

“I oppose the Trump Administration’s decision to reinstate the 10% tariffs on imports of non-alloyed aluminum from Canada,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “The United States and Canada have a strong economic partnership and trading relationship. This decision will slow the rate of our economic recovery from COVID-19, particularly for the manufacturers along the Northern Border in the North Country. Instead, our focus must be on working with our allies to address China’s overcapacity and the subsidized aluminum they continue to dump on the world market. I urge the Administration to reverse this reinstatement so we can focus on restoring our economy while holding unfriendly nations – like China – accountable.”

“This is an unfortunate act of self-harm by the U.S., as past tariffs against Canada have been,” said Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce. “The U.S. and Canada make things together and this directly increases costs to many of our manufacturers with cross border supply chains that include aluminum goods. Just weeks ago, on July 1st, we implemented the new USMCA agreement as a celebration of the enormous importance of the U.S.-Canada economic partnership, and now we are already forgetting the special nature of that partnership. Hopefully, this will be short term in nature and will be reconsidered and reversed quickly.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s August 6th Pandemic Update

Today is day 159 of the pandemic. This crisis is not over. We need to rely only on science and data. This is not about politics—it’s about science. And the virus will continue to ricochet across this country until we realize that unless we control it everywhere, we won’t control it anywhere.
New Yorkers worked hard to change our behavior and bring the numbers down to the levels we have been holding steady through our phased reopening and we must continue to adhere to these same protocols—wear a mask, stay six feet apart, avoid crowds—to keep moving in the right direction. We all need to remember that you don’t need to feel sick to spread the virus. It is often those without symptoms who are passing it along to others.
It’s critical that every one of us remains vigilant and responsible. It’s up to us, New York.
Chart of the Day: Our total COVID hospitalizations continues to remain low.
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. The total number of COVID hospitalizations continues to remain low. Yesterday, there were 570 total hospitalizations and 132 people in the ICU. The State conducted 72,370 tests, of which 703, or 0.97%, were positive. Sadly, we lost 3 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. Gyms will remain closed as they are a nationally identified source of infections. We know that some states have reopened gyms only to have to close up again. While the threat of the virus looms, we will keep them closed.
3. We still see an issue with compliance at bars and restaurants. Yesterday, the State Liquor Authority and State Police Task Force visited 963 establishments in New York City and Long Island and observed 26 establishments that were in violation of pandemic-related Executive Orders.
4. Remember, there are over 750 testing sites across New York State. Testing is available to any New Yorker who wants a test and is free at any state-run facility. Find a testing site near you here.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: For the first time in the park’s history, the Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, NY is holding an outdoor dance festival. The festival will run through September 27 featuring mostly solo or socially distanced duet performances. New York State safety precautions are in place to protect both the dancers and audience.

Ever Upward,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

Assemblyman Jones: The State must act now before it is too late

“The North Country entered Phase IV over a month ago and it is unacceptable that so many small businesses remain closed due to lack of guidance released from the State. Gyms and fitness centers, bowling alleys, movie theaters, attractions, and other business not yet given guidance are still closed although we have been in the final stage of reopening for weeks. Our region relies on these small businesses and they will not survive much longer if they remain closed. The infection rate continues to be low and there is no reason why these businesses cannot reopen safely. Governor Cuomo, the Department of Health, and all other agencies involved in this decision must act now before it is too late to save these businesses and in the long run, sustain our local and state economies.”

Local COVID-19 Update for August 6th – Probable -1, Recovered +1, Active -2, Tested +164

Here are today’s Clinton County COVID-19 case updates.

CCHD – Though COVID-19 is widespread in several areas of the United States, in the North Country we are doing well. Thanks to our residents acting responsibly and following precautions, we have been able to slow the spread. Keep up the good work! To stay open and safe, we need to continue to avoid large gatherings, wear face coverings, be mindful about maintaining a physical distance of 6 feet from others, and wash our hands frequently.
