We continue to make good progress against Coronavirus—for the 12th consecutive day, our statewide infection rate has been below 1 percent. But COVID is not over. Complacency or letting our guard down is a threat to that hard-won progress. We need to keep taking steps to protect one another to keep the numbers low. It’s up to each and every New Yorker.

Chart of the Day: Total hospitalizations are flat.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:

1. The total number of COVID hospitalizations remains low. Yesterday, there were 548 total hospitalizations. Of the 80,425 tests reported yesterday, 631, or 0.78%, were positive. Sadly, we lost 6 New Yorkers to the virus.

2. I urge New Yorkers to get a flu shot. While we still handle COVID, flu season looms on the horizon. Today, the State Department of Health will issue letters to local health departments requiring them to submit plans as to how they will handle testing for flu and COVID. This year it is especially important that New Yorkers get their flu shot. Find a flu vaccine site near you.

3. The Brooklyn Museum and El Museo del Barrio will reopen to the public on September 12th. Last week, I announced that New York City museums and cultural institutions can reopen starting Monday, August 24th at 25 percent capacity with safety protocols in place.

4. The moratorium for residential and commercial evictions in New York City has been extended to October 1st. Evictions will remain paused for New Yorkers and small businesses facing financial hardship due to the pandemic.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: In May, two teenagers in Pearland, Texas dressed up in Spider-Man costumes and held drive-by “birthday parades” for children in their neighborhood. The teens expanded the idea into a fundraiser called “Drive By Heroes,” where they would make heroic appearances in exchange for food donations to their local community center.

Stefanik Announces Over $550,000 USDA Rural Business Development Grant Funding for the North Country

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik announced over $550,000 in USDA Rural Business Development grant funding for four North Country organizations.

The Essex County Industrial Development Agency has been awarded $300,000 to facilitate the expansion and retention of business activity within Essex County. An estimated 53 jobs will be created as a result of this investment.

The Lewis County Development Corporation has been awarded $99,950. This investment will assist Black River Valley Natural (BVRN) in expanding its creamery operation. Funding will allow for the purchase of local milk, a cooler, a freezer and climate-controlled storage equipment for cheese making. An estimated 7 jobs will be created as a result of this investment.

The St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency has been awarded $57,000 to fund a Class A tractor-trailer training at the Career Ready Education and Success Training Center (CREST) at the State University of New York at Canton. Funding will support 12 students to obtain the necessary skills to pass the New York State Class A tractor-trailer driving examination. An estimated 12 jobs will be created as a result of this investment.

The Ticonderoga Revitalization Alliance has been awarded $99,528 to fund vocational training for Ticonderoga Revitalization Alliance’s Trade Education Access Program. Funds will provide tuition for 8 high school 2020/2021 academic year seniors. An estimated 24 jobs will be created as a result of this investment

Here are today’s Clinton County COVID-19 case updates.

We have heard concern from residents as to whether college students living in Clinton County will be counted or reported in our case counts, should they be COVID-19 positive. To clarify- yes, case counts reported by CCHD include anyone living in Clinton County, NY at the time of their illness. Contact tracing and isolation or quarantine orders are completed just as they would be for any other resident.
