Health Department Concerned about Rise in Cases due to Lack of Social Distancing

“This rise in cases is very disturbing because it was preventable,” stated John Kanoza, the County’s Director of Public Health.

Plattsburgh, May 16, 2020. Nine new lab-confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Clinton County are associated with several recent parties in Plattsburgh. All nine are isolating in their homes. None are currently hospitalized. Contact tracing as of Friday evening had identified 27 individuals as close contacts. These people are now in quarantine.

When asked about the impact this might have on reopening, Mr. Kanoza pointed out that the metrics, set forth by Governor Cuomo are based on hospitalizations. He noted, “Because these individuals are infected but not hospitalized, they will not immediately affect the County’s reopening. However, any spread of COVID-19 may lead to serious illness in some people. I am concerned for the health of all who may have been exposed and concerned that new cases could result in new hospitalizations.”

CCHD’s contact tracing team is continuing to identify and quarantine contacts. The team will need to monitor each of the new cases and their contacts along with approximately 46 other individuals already in isolation or quarantine.

Mr. Kanoza stated, “People are tired of staying home and distancing. I get that. But, this virus will not go away just because we are tired. We need to maintain the health practices that got us to the point where we are able to slowly begin to reopen our County.” He reiterated, “We must stay home when possible, maintain distance between ourselves and others when we go out, wear a face covering when distancing is not possible and wash our hands often. These strategies have worked so far. We must continue.”

CCHA closed to the public, available for research inquiries

In accordance with state guidelines regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Clinton County Historical Association Museum will remain closed to the public indefinitely and has postponed all events until further notice. In addition, the opening of the Bluff Point Lighthouse is also on hold.

CCHA staffers are working from home on the museum’s collections and administrative tasks, and are available for research help. The Association’s FaceBook pages remain active and research inquiries may be sent to director@clintoncountyhistorical.

Stefanik Statement on Pelosi’s $3 Trillion Partisan Legislation; Need Immediate Bipartisan Relief

From the office of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released the following statement on Speaker Pelosi’s $3 trillion partisan legislation:
“Speaker Pelosi did not reach across the aisle even once to work with Republicans on this $3 trillion, 1,800-page partisan wish list,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “This $3 trillion bill is a non-starter written behind closed doors. We need a bipartisan COVID-19 relief bill immediately to provide support for our rural counties and municipalities across our District. The New York Congressional Delegation has effectively worked to propose solutions whether its increased funds for hospitals, nursing homes, or testing capacity. The Speaker needs to reach out to all Members to negotiate a package rather than writing her bill behind closed doors and jamming in her partisan wish list including a federal takeover of state and local elections, the release of prisoners including illegal immigrants and violent offenders, and providing funding to sanctuary cities. This legislation will never become law, and Speaker Pelosi knows it. This political game is offensive to the spirit of the body of Congress and to the American people who are hurting and deserve bipartisan relief now.
“I will fight to ensure that the bipartisan bill includes direct resources for the North Country whether for our farmers who have suffered immense losses due to supply chain disruptions, direct funding for local governments to fund police forces, firefighters, and schools, extended assistance for small businesses and enhanced support for displaced workers to reenter the workforce. Despite Pelosi’s refusal to work across the aisle, I will continue to work with my colleagues in a bipartisan manner on policy solutions that actually have a chance to be signed into law.”

Stefanik Joins Members of NY Delegation to Request Investigation Into New York State’s Safety and Health Guidance for Nursing Homes

From the office of Congresswoman Elise Stefanick
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik joined with Members of the NY Delegation to send a letter urging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to investigate New York State’s adherence to appropriate safety and health guidance for nursing homes and long-term care facilities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This request comes after New York State issued uncertain and shifting policy guidance on providing care for some of the most vulnerable in our communities at nursing homes statewide. This included encouraging facilities to accept patients who have been previously diagnosed with COVID-19, and at one point, allowing asymptomatic COVID-19 caregivers to attend to residents. Additionally, without sufficient state-provided personal protective equipment (PPE), healthcare workers have been at a significantly higher risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19. Congresswoman Stefanik was joined by Reps. John Katko (NY-24), Lee Zeldin (NY-1), Pete King (NY-2), and Tom Reed (NY-23) in sending this letter to HHS and CMS.

Diocese of Ogdensburg begins discussion about resuming public worship | Coronavirus | pressrepublican.com

Diocese of Ogdensburg Communications Director Darcy Fargo said Thursday that, like other entities, the diocese is still awaiting guidance from the state both on when churches can reopen and whether they fit into one of the reopening phases.

“We just don’t know where we fall at this point,” she continued.

“It’s kind of frustrating — everybody would really like to resume worship services and resume the sacraments, but obviously we want to do it in the safest way possible.

We’d really appreciate some guidance.”
