A memorable farewell for a longtime neighbor and friend

By John T. Ryan

Peru, NY May 10, 2020 – Neighbors, friends, brother Knights of Columbus, and the Peru Fire Department gave longtime Peru resident Deacon George Benson a grand send-off yesterday. They gathered along the Jabez Allen Rd. to wave and shout good-bye as George left home and passed by riding in his son Michael’s camper.  In a few days they should arrive in Colorado where Michael lives and where George hopes to move into a nearby assisted living facility. The past two weeks have been very difficult for the Benson family. Carmen Benson, George’s wife of 60+ years passed away on April 24th.

Deacon George Benson is a U.S. Air Force Vietnam War veteran who was once assigned to Plattsburgh Air Force Base. Many people know him for his post-military civilian position as the Air Base Officers’ Club Manager.   At St. Augustine’s Parish many people recall his welcoming spirit at baptisms and his powerful sermons at mass. Unfortunately, Crohn’s disease has limited his diaconate activities for the past few years.

Neighbors and friends describe George Benson as a very nice man, a great man, an exceptional man. Thirty-one-year neighbor and friend Dee Jenkins said, “When my husband Dick got sick George was very understanding and compassionate. He was a big help to us.” Others recall his warm personal greetings. When George spoke to anyone he gave them his 100% attention.

Neighbors, friends, and St. Augustine’s parishioners undoubtedly expressed these words to Deacon George Benson, “Best wishes George. Have a safe journey to Colorado and enjoy the days that follow. You have been a good friend, a wonderful neighbor and we will miss you so very, very much!”

Deacon George greets Helen Jarvis and Betty Hughes at a community dinner.

NBC 5 May 10, 2020 COVID19 Update

Health officials across the country warned Americans to refrain from celebrating Mother’s Day in large crowds this year, urging that continued social distancing is still key to preventing more coronavirus cases. The warning came as more states announced plans for the first phases of reopening their economies. Meanwhile, an uptick in cases in China and South Korea have some health officials worried about a feared second wave of cases. In Seoul, more than 2,100 bars and other nightspots were shut down because of the new cases. Germany scrambled to contain fresh outbreaks at slaughterhouses, and in Italy, authorities feared people got too close in the first weekend of eased restrictions.

Here’s what else you need to know about COVID-19 in the U.S.:
• There have been more than 1.3 million coronavirus cases, and nearly 80,000 people have died.
• President Donald Trump tweeted that the U.S. will purchase $3 billion worth of food from farms to provide to food banks.
• The U.S. economy lost 20.5 million jobs in April, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday — by far the most sudden and largest decline since the government began tracking the data in 1939.

Mission of Hope Supporters Respond

So, in less than 12 hours, I received email pledges and Venmo commitments that reached our $3500 goal.  Once we’ve received the funds you’ve indicated you would donate, we will be able to provide a total of 20,000 more masks for our brothers and sisters in Nica.  While their fears are palpable, so will their hope be visible and their faith rewarded!  As Jesus reminded us, “whatsoever you do for the least ones, that you do unto me”!

From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the suffering poor, thank you!

And by the way, any additional funds we receive beyond what you’ve committed to will be used for the continued needs during this pandemic crisis.

Blessings and good health to your loved ones!

Sr. Debbie Blow

Cuomo Extends Authority for ‘PAUSE’ Order, But Some Reopening Still Possible After May 15 – NBC New York

Source: Cuomo Extends Authority for ‘PAUSE’ Order, But Some Reopening Still Possible After May 15 – NBC New York

May 09, 2020 NBC 5 COVID-19 Report

Although New York has been the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, the state’s death and hospitalization rates are going down. Numbers are looking better in some corners of the U.S. as much of the country debates how to move forward with battling COVID-19. More than two-thirds of Americans worry their states are reopening too quickly, according to a poll from Pew Research Center, while protestors have taken to the streets in other states to demand reopening.

Here’s what else you need to know about COVID-19 in the U.S.:
• There have been more than 1.2 million coronavirus cases and over 77,000 deaths.
• Experts have said reopening too soon could lead to another wave of the pandemic, but it could be weeks before the impact is seen.
• Dozens of children in New York have been hospitalized with a condition doctors described as “pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome.” Most of them tested positive for coronavirus or had positive antibody tests.

‘I love him so much’: COVID-19 keeps Peru Navy mom from seeing son | Local News | pressrepublican.com

PERU — Matthew Guski graduated from basic training for the U.S. Navy, March 27.

His mother Honora Frechette and his family were not able to attend his ceremony.

Witnessing this wonderful and outstanding achievement was denied because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which is preventing family and friends from seeing their loved ones graduate.

Guski’s family from the town of Peru was no exception.

An email just received from Sister Debbie Blow, Director of the North Country Mission fo Hope

Good morning everyone,

Even in the midst of the pandemic and subsequent struggles we face here in the United States, the reality is even worse in Nicaragua.

We have an urgent plea from our administrators in Nicaragua and many of you have wondered how you can help.

Here’s the situation: In a zoom meeting with Mauricio and Magaly yesterday afternoon, we were informed that the situation worsens as the COVID-19 impacts our brothers and sisters in Nicaragua.

Previously, the Mission partnered with the Fuller Project and were able to have the women in Nica make 4000 masks for approximately $1400.00. That’s $.35 per mask. When the distribution began in our 13 poor barrios, they quickly ran out and weren’t even able to provide a mask to all of the most vulnerable. I asked if we were able to come up with another $1400, could they purchase the supplies and could they use another 4000. Their response was, “that would be a start”. I also asked if the people were actually using the masks and they emphatically stated YES! They were practicing social responsibility and pleaded for more.

Further, they told me that while the government fails to share or acknowledge the accurate numbers of people with the virus, people are VERY ill. In ONE hospital alone, there are at least 16 doctors with the Coronavirus, and no one in any hospital has any PPE’s. People are told to go to the hospitals, but then, the medical staff is ill and unable to treat plus the vast majority of the people the Mission of Hope serves, have no way of even getting sick people to the hospitals in Managua.

While Mauricio and Magaly have no real way of knowing the depth of numbers, Mauricio indicated there are at least 5 of his neighbors with the virus and when living in such crowded conditions, it is sure to spread….and “many, many people are sick”. Everyone is frightened.

And so….we would like to invite anyone who is able to make a small donation toward our Mission’s covid-19 response, to do so and mark “masks” or “emergencies” in the memo section. You can also VENMO and write covid as reason.

I am very pleased to tell you that we will have the ability to match any donations you can make up to $3500 or a total of 10,000 masks. So, With your help, the end result is that we could authorize up to 20,000 more masks, etc.

Time is of the essence here and we look forward to hearing from those of you who are able to help. Yes, we have received previous covid donations and as you know, we’ve assisted local food banks here and in Nica, and we have also donated masks locally and regionally as well.

Finally, on another note, I also learned that the parents of many of our sponsored students, are asking if they keep their children home from school to protect them from catching or spreading the virus, would they still be able to keep their sponsorship. (Note that the government operated schools have not closed)…. part of presenting an image that nothing is wrong. Only the private schools have closed at this point, so parents are torn as to what to do. I assured our administrators that they should assure the parents of our sponsored students to keep their children as safe as possible and that due to this global pandemic, no one would lose their sponsorship this year. Their children’s health is also our concern.

So, while we struggle, our Nica brothers and sisters do as well and have far fewer options.

Thank you for considering our request. Please feel free to advise me if you can help. I’ll keep you updated on totals we receive for our ability to respond to the cries of our brothers and sisters.

Live in HOPE,

Sr. Debbie
