All signs point to the U.S. national peak for daily deaths from COVID-19 to be nearing. While the models now show fewer deaths in the U.S., that highest point of daily loss should happen in the next few days. State and federal officials are cautioning, though, that while the national apex quickly approaches, some areas won’t see a peak in local deaths for weeks. Dr. Anthony Fauci said the number of hospitalizations in New York and Connecticut is decreasing and that’s a sign social distancing measures are working.

Here’s what else you need to know about COVID-19 around the world:

There are more than 473,000 cases in the United States, and the death toll has passed 17,800.
Globally, the number of cases has surpassed 1.6 million with more than 100,000 deaths.
The main U.S. model is now showing fewer projected deaths, down to about 60,000 people by August.
New York’s governor signed an executive order to bring more funeral directors to the state to help with a backlog of processing victims of COVID-19.

Stefanik Introduces COVID-19 Graduate Relief Act with Bipartisan Colleagues

Saratoga, NY – Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik introduced the COVID-19 Graduate Relief Act along with Rep. Josh Harder (D-CA) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). This bipartisan legislation provides necessary loan relief to students graduating from college during the COVID-19 pandemic by allowing 2020 graduates to defer their student loans for up to three years. The Secretary of Education can extend this relief to 2021 and 2022 graduates if deemed necessary. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) introduced the COVID-19 Graduate Relief Act in the Senate.

“This bipartisan legislation is a critical addition to the already passed CARES Act, which provides much-needed student loan relief to students during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “Graduating college students have already suffered severe disruption in their education, and the current state of our economy may have an impact on their ability to find a job following graduation. Allowing graduating students to defer their loans for up to 3 years not only will give students monetary relief, but also will significantly improve their mental health and stress levels. The COVID-19 crisis has a profound impact on each one of us, and its important to ensure our young people attempting to enter the workforce are not forgotten.”
