NCPR’s Adirondack bureau chief Brian Mann heads to NPR – – The Adirondack Almanack

Brian Mann’s departure for National Public Radio is not a surprise given the outstanding quality of his work. He’s intelligent, hard-working, fair and truthful. What more can you ask? A contributing NPR reporter for several years, he’ll be spending more time on science, health and addiction issues.

NPR is a great news source. Admittedly most of its reporters ask questions from a liberal perspective; however, they seek truth the ultimate objective of journalism.

We’re fortunate to have three public radio stations broadcasting in the North Country: North Country Public Radio NCPR in Canton, WAMC in Albany and VPR in Burlington.

Clinton County Health Department March 30th COVID-19 Update

There are now 16 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Clinton County, four of whom have recovered. One hundred fifty-five tests have returned negative results. In a media release issued today, the Unified Command for the COVID-19 Response in Clinton County identified two priority messages. One involves follow-up information to a Media Release issued on March 29, 2020. The other is a request for medical supplies.

Clinton County Health Department (CCHD) and Clinton County Sheriff Department representatives have identified dates when a symptomatic individual (referenced in a previous release) who later tested positive for COVID-19 was in the Plattsburgh Walmart; times of day have been verified by supporting documentation for several visits. “CCHD is providing this information because we said that we would,” stated Karen Derusha, a spokesperson for the Health Department. She emphasized however, “This one individual should not be the focus of your concern. At all times, when you are among other people, practice social distancing and hand hygiene to protect yourself. There may be others in the community who have COVID-19 including those with milder symptoms or those with symptoms have not yet progressed to a point that results in testing.”

“If you feel sick, stay home,” is the message CCHD continues to stress. “Anyone who has symptoms consistent with COVID-19 (cough, fever, shortness of breath), as well as anyone who has other symptoms of illness that could be spread to someone else, should isolate themselves at home. Right now, we all need to be extra cautious about spreading all germs,” stated Ms. Derusha.

Residents can also help stem the spread of COVID-19 by checking their cupboards. The County is currently accepting donations of unopened medical supplies, such as N-95 masks, surgical masks, bleach wipes, hand sanitizer, and gloves. To donate, individuals or businesses may call United Way of the Adirondack Region at 518- 563-0028. According to Eric Day, Director of the Clinton County Office of Emergency Services, “We thank United Way of the Adirondacks for managing these donations of supplies for first responders and essential workers and we appreciate your donations of unopened packages to help stretch our current supply.”

DEC Announces 2019-20 Deer Harvest Estimates

Hunters in New York Harvested More than 224,000 Deer in 2019-20

DEC Tested More than 2,600 Deer and Continues to Find No Evidence of CWD

The 2019 estimated deer take includes 103,787 antlerless deer and 120,403 antlered bucks. Statewide, this represents a nine percent decrease in antlerless harvest and a six percent increase in buck harvest from the last season. Regionally, hunters took 30,236 deer in the Northern Zone and 193,954 deer in the Southern Zone.

Across the state, hunters continued to voluntarily pass up young bucks. The portion of yearlings (1.5 years old) in the adult buck harvest dropped to 37 percent, the lowest level ever, and for the first time, harvest of 2.5-year-old bucks (41 percent) exceeded that of yearling bucks, demonstrating that New York hunters are adhering to the DEC campaign, Let Young Bucks Go and Watch Them Grow.

In addition, the 2019 season proved favorable for bowhunters, as take during the bowhunting season increased 18 percent from 2018. Deer take during the regular and muzzleloader seasons both dropped about six percent.

DEC’s 2019 Deer Harvest Summary report (PDF, 7 MB) provides tables, charts, and maps detailing the deer harvest around the state can be found on DEC’s website. Past harvest summaries are also available on DEC’s website.

Response fund established to rapidly deploy flexible resources to help meet urgent community needs

LAKE PLACID, NY – In response to the impacts of COVID-19 in our region, Adirondack Foundation, in partnership with the United Way of the Adirondack Region. and other foundations and businesses, is activating a response fund to rapidly deploy flexible resources to help meet urgent community needs.

An initial $400,000 is available to use immediately, thanks to commitments from Adirondack Foundation, Cloudsplitter Foundation, Charles R. Wood Foundation, United Way of the Adirondack Region, Adirondack Energy’s Adirondack for Kids, Champlain National Bank and other generous donors.

The Special and Urgent Needs (SUN) Fund at Adirondack Foundation provides a way for community members to financially support vulnerable populations impacted by COVID-19-related closures and other cascading fallouts.

Grant funding will focus these critical areas of need: access to food, childcare services, support for low-wage workers and the elderly, and support for nonprofits and small businesses involved in response efforts.

“We have been monitoring the rapidly changing situation on the ground and collaborating with local government, health agencies, nonprofits, businesses and other community partners to identify regional needs for community and nonprofit support,” said John Bernardi, President & CEO, United Way of the Adirondack Region.

“This collective commitment of funders is a testament to our dedication to the Adirondack region and a recognition that we can amplify our impact by working together,” said Cali Brooks, President and CEO, Adirondack Foundation. “We will work to rapidly deploy resources where they are most needed and adapt to evolving needs.”

“We may not know what tomorrow will bring, but it’s vitally important to be prepared to meet the immediate needs of our neighbors. Our goal is to help Adirondack Foundation meet these emergency needs while we work on longer-term mechanisms to counteract this pandemic and its economic and social implications,” said Lee Keet, Chairman of Cloudsplitter Foundation.

Community members interested in donating to this fund can find more information online:
