Stefanik Sends Letter to Senate Leadership Requesting Further Support for Small Businesses and Workers During COVID-19 Crisis

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik sent a letter to Senate Leadership with a bipartisan group of her colleagues requesting additional support for small businesses, employees, and workers who may not be traditionally covered by unemployment insurance. During this COVID-19 crisis, many freelance employees or independent contractors in the small business world are not covered by traditional unemployment insurance.

Additionally, during unprecedented times like these, it is vital for small businesses to have available cash flows to remain operational and to pay their employees.

This letter urges the Senate to:
Include the expansion of supplemental unemployment assistance for workers who have been impacted by these adverse economic conditions.
Bolster the SBA 7a loan guaranty program by raising the maximum loan guaranty percentage to a minimum of 90%.
Include language in their emergency stimulus package that allows more individuals and businesses to utilize the House-passed paid leave tax credits.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our North Country economy, and they must be protected during this unprecedented crisis,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I urge the Senate to prioritize the unique needs of small businesses, employees, and workers in order to avoid closures and financial disruption for hardworking families. I have spoken directly with many small businesses in my district and have assured them I am working hard on legislative solutions. During this crisis, Congress must lead on protecting the American worker.

Stefanik Applauds USDA Partnership to Provide 1 Million Meals to Rural Children During COVID-19 Crisis

Washington, D.C. – Today, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it will be collaborating with a variety of non-government organizations to deliver nearly 1,000,000 meals to students at rural schools that have closed due to COVID-19. This announcement follows the USDA’s decision last week to give schools increased flexibility to continue providing meals at no cost to students in need during coronavirus-related school closures.

“Today, I spoke with numerous school Superintendents across New York’s 21st District to applaud their incredible mobilization efforts to deliver food to North Country students during this unprecedented time. This was a daunting task and our communities came together and stepped up to support our families,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I applaud the USDA for announcing this important initiative nationwide to partner with organizations to feed our rural students during this crisis. This action to deliver boxes of food to children in rural America is encouraging news, and I will continue to advocate for initiatives that support our North Country students and their families during this difficult time.”

North Country bars and restaurants continue to push through after new state regulations

Plattsburgh, NY – 3/17/2020 – As the pandemic continues to change shape, it is more important than ever to support our local businesses and keep your dollars within the community. With the new “no table service” policy, restaurants and bars are doing their best to adjust to the ever-changing restrictions. The North Country Chamber of Commerce has compiled a convenient list of Chamber member restaurants and bars that are still open and offering new services to their customers during this time of hardship.

Please remember that you can continue to help local businesses by:

Ordering take out, delivery or curbside pick-up as much as you can

Buying gift cards or certificates now to use later

Being generous with your tips

Sharing and interacting with their social media posts

And by simply being patient, being kind and saying thank you during a hard time. Remember, we are all in this together!

For a full list of restaurants and bars, as well as their current offerings, visit http://bit.ly/NCRandBs (and keep checking back as this page will be continuously changing).

The page also features information for business owners’, including information on the new allowance for alcohol sales for offsite consumption, sanitation guidelines and the press release from NYS on the new guidelines.
