Blessing in the Chaos
To all that is chaotic
in you,
let there come silence.
Let there be
a calming
of the clamoring,
a stilling
of the voices that
have laid their claim
on you,
that have made their
home in you,
that go with you
even to the
holy places
but will not
let you rest,
will not let you
hear your life
with wholeness
or feel the grace
that fashioned you.
Let what distracts you
cease.
Let what divides you
cease.
Let there come an end
to what diminishes
and demeans,
and let depart
all that keeps you
in its cage.
Let there be
an opening
into the quiet
that lies beneath
the chaos,
where you find
the peace
you did not think
possible
and see what shimmers
within the storm. Jan Richardson

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik sent a letter to House leadership requesting that New York State receive significantly more funding in any forthcoming federal legislative relief package. The last stimulus package, the CARES Act, allocated the funding for state and local governments purely by population, not by the amount of cases or the impact it has had on the state. There was also a minimum allocation of $1.25 billion per state, which gives low-population states a disproportionate share of the money. New York is the epicenter of the Coronavirus pandemic and is in urgent need of more federal support.
“New York State is the epicenter of coronavirus pandemic and is facing an unprecedented number of cases compared to many other states across the country,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “Future legislative relief packages need to reflect the severe impact this crisis has had on New York and our state and local budgets when allocating critical resources. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the New York delegation to advocate for the needs of our state as we work to combat this public health crisis.”

Plattsburgh, April 1, 2020. As of this morning, Clinton County has 24 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19, as well as one probable case. This figure represents the total number of positive test results since testing began. To date, 186 tests have come back negative. Five of the individuals testing positive have since recovered. Many other individuals are self-quarantining or self-isolating based on general recommendations for anyone who suspects they may have been exposed or are having symptoms, even if they have not been tested.
As the number of positive cases and individuals experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 continue to increase within our community, many residents have asked what to do when they or a family member experience symptoms. “In regard to questions about managing your health, we always recommend contacting your health care provider first for guidance. They know you and your medical history, and are best suited for addressing your concerns,” stated Erin Streiff, Director of Health Care Services for the Clinton County Health Department. “If you experience a fever, cough, or shortness of breath, call your health care provider. They may tell you to manage your care from home, as most people who get sick with COVID-19 will have only mild illness and should recover at home. For most people, symptoms last a few days and get better after a week.” Ms. Streiff indicates that, “The following tips may be helpful in managing symptoms at home or caring for a family member with symptoms.”
• Stay home from work, school, and away from other public places. If you must go out for medical care, avoid using any kind of public transportation, ridesharing, or taxis.
• Monitor your symptoms carefully. If your symptoms get worse, call your health care provider immediately.
• Get rest and stay hydrated.
• If you have a medical appointment, call your health care provider ahead of time and tell them that you have or
may have COVID-19.
• For medical emergencies, call 9-1-1 and notify the dispatch personnel that you have or may have COVID-19.
• Cover your cough and sneezes.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or clean your hands with an alcohol-based
hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
• As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people in your home. Use a separate
bathroom, if available. If a separate bathroom is not available, clean the shared bathroom after every use. If you need to be around other people in or outside of the home, wear a facemask.
• Avoid sharing personal items with other people in your household, like dishes, towels, and bedding.
• Clean all surfaces that are touched often, like counters, tabletops, and doorknobs. Use household cleaning
sprays or wipes according to the label instructions.
• If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency
warning signs include*:
o Troublebreathing
o Persistentpainorpressureinthechest
o New confusion or inability to arouse
o Bluish lips or face
*This list is not all-inclusive. Consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

Saratoga, NY – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is calling for the IRS to provide immediate clarity on the process for seniors to receive their stimulus check, following the information they put out yesterday indicating some seniors would be required to first file tax returns before they can receive their COVID-19 crisis stimulus checks. The CARES Act provides that 2019 Social Security Benefit Statements are to be used to determine eligibility for individuals who don’t file a tax return, a critical safeguard to ensure eligible seniors are not left behind.
“During this unprecedented time of need, requiring seniors to go through the confusing and laborious tax return filing process before receiving desperately-needed stimulus checks is unacceptable,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “Thousands of seniors across my district do not file tax returns because their main source of income is Social Security. North Country seniors should not have the added burden and stress of figuring out how to file tax returns before receiving the checks that Congress allocated for them. I represent one of the largest constituencies of seniors in the country, and I will continue to be their advocate. This policy must be clarified immediately.”
