Peru Central School District Recognized as a Common Sense School

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0002.JPG

Common Sense, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology, has recognized Peru Central School District as a Common Sense School.

Peru Central School has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing its students to think critically and use technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate, while preparing them for the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying. With the right support, kids can take ownership of their digital lives, engage with real issues, and change their communities for the better. The recognition acknowledges our school’s commitment to creating a culture of digital citizenship.

“We applaud the faculty and staff of Peru for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education,” said Liz Kline, vice president of education programs at Common Sense Education. “Peru deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large.”

Peru Central School has been using Common Sense Education’s innovative and research-based digital citizenship resources, which were created in collaboration with researchers from Project Zero, led by Howard Gardner at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and are grounded in the real issues students and teachers face. The resources teach students, educators, and parents tangible skills related to internet safety, protecting online reputations and personal privacy, media balance, managing online relationships, and media literacy. The free K–12 curriculum is used in classrooms across all 50 states, in more than 65,000 schools by more than 750,000 educators.

“We’re honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School,” said Nicholas Damiani, District Technology Coordinator. “By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world.”

New Law Clarifies Removal of Disruptive Campers

From the office of State Senator Betty Little

Legislation providing clear legal direction for campground owners needing to remove long-term guests who are disruptive has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.  State Senator Betty Little and Assemblyman Billy Jones sponsored the measure (S1944a/A1659a) at the request of Campground Owners of New York (CONY).

“Camping is such a wonderful experience, especially for families, looking to enjoy the outdoors and make great memories,” said Senator Betty Little.  “Unfortunately, and thankfully rarely, some campers can become overly disruptive and difficult to deal with and create problems for those around them and for the campground management.  This new law provides clarity of what do when that situation arises.”

“Campgrounds should be fun and welcoming spaces where families are able to get out in nature and explore, but it’s important that visitors are respectful of the grounds and their fellow campers,” said Jones. “When guests fail to pay or become disruptive, they hurt everyone’s experience. I am proud to have sponsored this legislation and pleased that it is now law so that campground owners have a fair and straightforward process to remove disrespectful guests.”

According to the new law, a campground owner can request a long-term guest, defined as an individual staying more than a week, be removed from the campground for numerous reasons, including: disturbing, threatening or endangering other guests; illegal possession of alcohol or drugs; violating state or local law; or, violating any other lawful posted rule or regulation of the campground that enhances the safety and quiet enjoyment of its guests as part of the occupancy agreement.

The disruptive guest would need to receive a written warning that his or her conduct could result in their removal from the campground if repeated.  In the event the conduct is repeated and the guest fails to vacate the campground after being requested to do so, the campground owner could request removal by law enforcement officer, who can cite the guest with trespass.

The guest would be entitled to a refund of the unused portion of paid fees, less any amount otherwise owed to the campground or deducted for damages. The statute also provides direction of how to deal with property left at the campground by the removed guest.

Trump Declares New York Disaster Declaration Following Stefanik Advocacy

From the office of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Washington, D.C. – President Trump has officially declared a major disaster declaration for the state of New York, which will release federal funds to help communities in the North Country recover from the severe Halloween storm that caused massive damages from high winds and flooding. Included are the counties in NY-21 that are eligible to receive federal assistance through FEMA’s Public Assistance program: Essex, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Saratoga, and Warren. Additionally, all areas of the state are eligible for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant program.

“I am grateful to President Trump for responding quickly to my push for a major disaster declaration for the North Country following the devastating Halloween storm,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I worked with state and local officials to initiate a Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment in order to access FEMA funds to rebuild our communities, and sent a letter to President Trump asking that he take our request seriously. It is an honor to have delivered this result for the North Country, and I’m looking forward to continuing my work with local officials to ensure we have everything we need to rebuild.” Read more »
