Riverside Lanes Is Back

Au Sable Forks – After being closed for three years Riverside Lanes reopened on August 1st. Leagues have returned and the kitchen is operating. Au Sable Forks native John Sorrell, his wife Amy and Amy’s brother Kevin Bedard have brought the business back to life.

Amy Sorrell quit her full-time job to operate the business. She said, “I began working in restaurants when I was 15 and went to school for restaurant management. My brother Kevin has a degree in business and my husband John retires in five years and has always wanted to go into business.” She’s optimistic about the future saying, “It’s a vital part of the community and there are some serious bowlers here.”

Many things have been happening since the August 1 opening. Amy explained, “We opened the kitchen on September 15th. There’s a dart league and bowling leagues every night or afternoon except Wednesday. Bowlers are coming from several surrounding communities including Peru. The youth program is back and we have pre-school to 12th grade leagues and bowling instruction. We’re especially proud that as of November 13th the Au Sable Valley Patriots, the NYS Bowling Champions, are coming back. We’ll be the Home of the Patriots.”

Located at the corner of Route 9N and McCrea St. Riverside Lanes has been an important part of the community since 1902 when it opened as Riverside Hotel. Bowling lanes were installed in 1935. Today it includes an attractive restaurant, pool table, large arcade room and eight modern bowling lanes. The arcade games have proven to be popular with teens and families already enjoying their birthday parties. At a birthday party price of $12 for 3 bowling games, shoes, a burger and fries it’s quite a deal. Amy already has plans to expand the kitchen and install more comfortable seating in the alley pits. Eventually she’d like to open the upstairs as an Airbnb.

Town of Black Brook Supervisor Jon Douglass is very happy that Riverside Lanes has re-opened, He commented, “This is very positive. The business is a community staple and it adds to the quality of life here.” Douglass cited the nearby new Peru Credit Union building and the removal of an abandoned building as a sign that Au Sable Forks is moving in the right direction.

Riverside Lanes is open daily. There’s Early Bird Bowling on Tuesdays. The kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and hours will expand as soon as a liquor license is issued. Call 518-647-0179 for information.

Peru Youth Commission: “It’s that time of the year again. The snow is coming and Whiteface is calling.”

Anyone from Peru NY interested in joining this years ski and board club is welcome to join. All the details are attached. We will have a registration day on Tuesday November 19th from 7pm to 8pm at Town Hall. All forms, payment and a photographer are due at this time. Stefanik and Crist Veteran Rehabilitation Bill Passes House

From the office of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Washington, D.C. – Legislation introduced by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and Congressman Charlie Crist (D-FL-13) passed the House of Representatives. The Veteran Treatment Court Coordination Act gives veterans who commit non-violent crimes while transitioning to civilian life a chance at rehabilitation. It establishes a program within the Department of Justice, in coordination with the VA, to provide grants, training, and technical assistance to help state, local, and tribal governments develop and maintain veteran treatment courts.

“It is incumbent on Congress to make sure our veterans receive the best possible treatment when they return home from serving our country,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “Unfortunately, due to the stressors and psychological impact of their service, some veterans become entangled in the criminal justice system. This bill gives non-violent offenders a chance to rehabilitate themselves through a special program tailored to the unique needs of veterans. I’m grateful to my colleagues for joining us to pass this important, bipartisan bill, and am proud to support our veterans in every way that I possibly can.”

This legislation was reintroduced in January of this year, and was passed by the House Judiciary Committee two weeks ago.

Stefanik Co-Leads the Farm Workforce Modernization Act

From the office of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has signed on as an original cosponsor of the bipartisan Farm Workforce Modernization Act. The bill is being led by Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-4) and Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) and includes solutions to address the labor crisis facing American agriculture. The bill provides a pathway to legal status for undocumented farmworkers who have been working in agriculture for at least two years and plan to continue in their jobs. Additionally, the bill allows year-round workers, including dairy workers, to gain access to the H-2A program. It also simplifies the H-2A application process and establishes a mandatory E-Verify program to maintain employment authorization and records for the agricultural workforce.

“Agriculture is the backbone of the North Country, which is why I am proud to cosponsor this bipartisan legislation to ensure that our farmers have access to a stable, legal workforce, allowing them to continue to produce abundant, safe, and affordable food,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “We are fortunate to have a wide range of agriculture operations in the North Country that create jobs and drive our economy, and we are one of the top dairy-producing districts in the country. Securing a reliable and skilled workforce is essential to maintain the success of those operations. This legislation is an important step in addressing the needs of our dedicated, hardworking farmers and I will continue to be a leading advocate for them here in Congress.”

“New York Farm Bureau believes in common-sense immigration reform and has made it a priority for more than two decades,” said David Fisher, President of New York Farm Bureau. “We appreciate Congresswoman Stefanik’s efforts highlighting this very important issue and support for the bi-partisan legislative process. We hope to find a pathway forward to resolve this matter once and for all to benefit our farms, employees and food supply.”

“Legislation that streamlines the process for a legal, reliable workforce for all of agriculture is long overdue,” said Cynthia Haskins, President of the New York Apple Association. “The New York apple growers are appreciative of the hard work that went into this Act.”

“The legislation represents a significant improvement over the status quo for our growers in the H-2A program and those who employ domestic workers,” said Jim Bair, President & CEO of the U.S. Apple Association. “The legislation is a compromise and the first step in a lengthy process. We will continue to provide input and seek improvements as that process moves forward.”
