“Today marks the first day of my last legislative session and it certainly is bittersweet.  Words alone could not fully express my gratitude for the opportunity I have had to represent my constituents in Albany and I am very touched that Governor Cuomo recognized my public service as part of his State of the State Address.  I look forward to another productive session and getting as much done as I can on behalf of this incredible district that I am honored to represent.

“Overall, our state’s focus has to be on encouraging growth.  The outmigration of New Yorkers is a trend that has to be reversed.  Losing representation in Congress, as is expected following this year’s census count, is not a good thing.  But that pales in comparison with the real impact of families leaving our communities and living many miles apart from loved ones because someone couldn’t afford the taxes any longer or needed to look to another state for a job opportunity.

“Here in our region, my concern is sustainability.  We need more full-time residents and the jobs and economic opportunity that makes that possible.  Ecological protection is important for the, but I really want to emphasize economic prosperity.  Investments in broadband must continue and we need to expand cell service for safety and for the economy.  We need to continue investing in water and sewer infrastructure, keeping our lakes and rivers clean and ensuring our schools and hospitals have the funding they need.  

“Funding these and many other important projects and services will be a challenge given the $6 billion deficit.  Tough decisions will need to be made.  What I will fight against is any region of the State being unfairly targeted by cuts.  Tough choices need to be as fair as possible.  And, addressing the financial challenges we face on the State level cannot come at the expense of local governments and property taxpayers with more unfunded mandates.

“Finally, I join many of my legislative colleagues, Republicans and Democrats, as well as sheriffs, district attorneys and many other law enforcement officials from all over the State, calling for the repeal of the so-called bail reform.  Clearly, the new law isn’t working and is putting innocent people at risk.  Getting rid of it and starting over with the expectation of the Legislature taking its time to get it right is what’s needed.”

Peru Primary has been awarded an additional grant to fund two additional prekindergarten classrooms to start on January 21, 2020! Students currently on our prekindergarten waitlist will be notified of their acceptance into our prekindergarten program.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is an original cosponsor to the Veteran Suicide Prevention Act. In September 2019, the VA released an alarming report showing that at least 60,000 veterans died by suicide between 2008 and 2017. On average, that is nearly 20 veterans per day who took their own life. This legislation, led by Congressman Pete King (D-NY), directs the VA to compile a publicly available review of suicides by veterans in the last five years. The review will include, but will not be limited to, total number of veteran suicides, demographic information, information on VA diagnoses and medication prescriptions, number of veterans with combat experience or trauma, and recommendations to improve the safety and well-being of veterans across the country.

“The alarming uptick in suicides by veterans is a public health crisis,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “As a result of their service, our veterans are subjected to many different stressors on a daily basis. I believe that when they return home from serving our country they deserve to have the best mental health care available. This legislation will be key to help us understand how to best understand the needs of our veterans to combat the growing number of veteran suicides through whatever means necessary. We are all forever indebted to those who chose to serve our country, and I am honored to fight for their well-being in Congress.”

Peru – On Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 7 p.m. the Peru Zoning Board of Appeals will consider granting use variance for the former Apple Blossom Florist building at 25 Pleasant St.  Rulfs Orchard, LLC.  has signed a contract to sell the building to a buyer who would locate self-storage units inside the building. The sale is contingent upon the use variance being granted. 

While the building is in a residential area it has a long history of commercial use. Peru Farm Center and Apple Blossom Florist operated there for decades. In May 2017 Rulfs moved Apple Blossom Florist to the Bear Swamp Rd. and attempted tried to sell the property for commercial use. When that failed to sell they requested and were granted permission to offer it for sale as a two-unit multi-family structure. The property remains unsold.

Use variances must satisfy Zoning Law Section 707 D 2 b requirements: 

No use variance shall be granted by a ZBA without a showing by the applicant that applicable zoning regulations and restrictions have caused unnecessary hardship. In order to prove such unnecessary hardship the applicant must meet the requirements of Town Law Section 267-b, which as of the date of adoption of this zoning law requires the following: The applicant shall demonstrate to the ZBA that for each and every permitted use under the zoning regulations for the particular district where the property is located,

1. the applicant cannot realize a reasonable return, provided that lack of return is substantial as demonstrated by competent financial evidence; and

2. the alleged hardship relating to the property in question is unique, and does not apply to a substantial portion of the district or neighborhood; and

3. the requested use variance, if granted, will not alter the essential character of the neighborhood; and

4. the alleged hardship has not been self-created.

PERU — The Peru Town Board will be holding an informational meeting on Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Town Hall to inform residents of the upcoming sewer project and easement signature request.

Following that meeting, the board will then hold its 2020 Organizational at 6:30.m.

The regular meeting will then follow at 7 p.m.

The meetings are open to the public.

“Iran Quds Force commander Soleimani was responsible for exporting terrorism around the world and targeting and killing American troops along with tens of thousands of people in the Middle East,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I support President Trump’s decisive action to respond to Iran’s dangerous belligerence.
