Governor Announces Suspension of Road and Bridge Construction to Ease Traffic Throughout the July 4th Holiday

Construction Suspended to Minimize Traffic Disruptions during Peak Travel Times

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended from 6 a.m. on Thursday, July 4 to 6 a.m. on Monday, July 8 to accommodate travelers during the busy Independence Day holiday.

Motorists should be aware that some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs. The construction suspension aligns with Governor Cuomo’s Drivers First initiative, which prioritizes the convenience of motorists to minimize traffic congestion and travel delays due to road and bridge work.

“With a record number of travelers expected to hit the road this Independence Day, we’re doing all we can to ease traffic and help New Yorkers get to their holiday destinations safely,” Governor Cuomo said. “During this time of celebration, it is imperative that motorists remain alert on the roads and do not drive distracted. Take a break at a rest stop or parking area, or use the text stops – it’s not worth putting your life and the lives of others at risk.”

Governor Cuomo is urging motorists to follow the state’s Move Over Law, which requires motorists to slow down and safely move over for law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and construction or maintenance vehicles that are stopped along roads across the state.

Assemblyman Jones works to create necessary flexibility for Adirondack infrastructure

From the office of Assemblyman Bill Jones

Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) announced that legislation he co-sponsored will activate the infrastructure land bank created for the Adirondack and Catskill parks by a recent constitutional amendment (A.8136). When fully implemented, municipalities will be allowed to apply to NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for easements on forest preserve lands for the construction of essential infrastructure.

“For many years, a common concern of municipalities was the difficulty of securing forest preserve easements for vital infrastructure,” Jones said. “Even utilizing a few hundred feet of forest preserve lands to install an electric line to prevent blackouts or straighten out a dangerous curve on a road required a constitutional amendment. This lack of flexibility in the constitution meant critical infrastructure projects could be delayed for years.” Read more »

Assemblyman Jones Kicks Off Highway Infrastructure Tour

From the office of Assemblyman Billy Jones

Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) began his highway infrastructure tour today to learn more about the North Country’s infrastructure needs and help keep drivers safe.

“Investing in infrastructure doesn’t just mean repairing old roads and building new bridges,” Jones said. “It’s an investment in our local economy and, most importantly, in the safety of North Country families. By heading out to local road work sites throughout the summer, I’m hoping to learn more about how we can help the hardworking men and women who maintain our roads and see what needs to be done to improve our commutes.”

Jones started his tour today with Beekmantown Town Supervisor Sam Dyer and Highway Superintendent Roger Perry, followed by rides with Schuyler Falls Town Supervisor Rick Pottiker and Highway Superintendent John Rock and Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman, Deputy Town Supervisor Meg Lefevre and Highway Superintendent Tim Dubrey. He toured many of the local roads that need repairs and met with highway crews to hear their concerns firsthand. Jones also hosted a roundtable discussion to discuss the needs of the municipalities.

Among many duties, the departments are responsible for repairing pavement, improving drainage systems, upgrading traffic signs and signals, removing litter and debris and ensuring road conditions are safe.[1]

Jones noted that these were the first of many stops he’ll be making this week. He will hold similar ride-alongs and roundtable discussions in Franklin County on July 2 with town officials from the towns of Bellmont, Burke and Chateaugay, and on July 3 in northern Clinton County with town officials from Champlain, Chazy and Mooers. Additional tours will be scheduled in late July and August.

Jones has continually fought to secure state funding to help replace the North Country’s roads and bridges. He helped pass a 2019-20 state budget that provides $438.1 million for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) and $39.7 million for the Marchiselli Program. These programs help municipalities complete much-needed road and bridge maintenance projects. Additionally, in the final weeks of the 2019 legislative session, Jones helped secure $65 million in Extreme Winter Recovery funding. North Country winters are notoriously harsh, and these funds will help keep our families’ travel a little smoother in the coming months, Jones noted.

Attention Peru Water District Customers

On July 8TH the Water Department will be completing repairs to the water system which will require us to shut part of the system down.  Water to all customers south of the Route 22 Little Ausable bridge will be shut off at 11 p.m. on Monday July 8th and could remain off for 3-4 hours. Customers can expect no water during this shut down and experience low pressure, air or stirred up water when system is recharged.

Due to the reduced pressure in the system a boil water order has to be issued until proper sampling confirms water is safe for consumption. Anticipated lift of boil water order is Thursday, July 11th.  Information and updates can be located at the following places: www.perutown.com, facebook@perugazette and on the town LED sign.
