Assemblyman Jones: Over $64 million in REDC funding awarded to North Country projects

From the Office of Assemblyman Billy Jones

Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) congratulated the North Country on receiving  $64.8 million through awards provided by the North Country Regional Economic Development Council (REDC).

“This state funding allows the North Country to attract new visitors and businesses helping our local economy to thrive,” said Jones. “The North Country continues to move forward with new ideas and this funding will help see these come to fruition.”

The funding will support a range of projects throughout the North Country, including:

  • a mid level lodging hotel in downtown Tupper Lake featuring seventy-five rooms and a host of amenities and features;
  • site preparation and first phase construction for the new AstroScience Center via the Adirondack Sky Center;
  • several towns including Dannemora, Ellenburg, and Saranac will construct new salt storage facilities;
  • the city of Plattsburgh will be able to make upgrades to their Water Resource and Recovery Facility as part of the downtown revitalization as well as construct a pump station to reduce potential harmful algal blooms;
  • the creation of a state of the art theatre facility in Saranac Lake by the Pendragon Theatre;
  • Citizen Advocates, Inc. will invest in a new commercial and residential development on West Main Street in downtown Malone. The four-story structure will be comprised of up to six new commercial spaces on the first floor, and 40 affordable apartments above;
  • an infiltration and inflow study will be completed by the Village of Chateaugay in order to enhance its water system;
  • the recreation center in the Village of Rouses Point will be rehabilitated to include facilities and expanded parking as well as enhanced equipment;
  • the Memorial Park in the Village of Malone will be rehabilitated and enhanced to reflect community needs and pedestrian safety;
  • an inherited abandoned missile silo, which is back flooded with ground water in the Town of Dannemora will be converted to a geothermal well for heating and cooling the facility, as well as a tracking solar array to achieve Net Zero Energy performance.

“The North Country REDC is giving our region the opportunity to improve our facilities and create new prospects,” said Jones. “The council’s efforts, including the extremely hard work by North Country Chamber of Commerce President Garry Douglas and Clarkson University President Anthony Collins, is bringing the North Country into a prosperous future for our hardworking families and our children. I applaud their efforts and look forward to the development of these many deserving projects.”

Hard Work Pays Off

Logan signs Letter of Intent with Matt Barie looking on

Peru Senior and stand out wrestler Logan Dubuque has recently signed his National Letter of Intent and is receiving an athletic scholarship to continue his education and wrestle at NCAA Division II Belmont Abbey College in Belmont North Carolina just outside of Charlotte.

Dubuque started wrestling going on six years now and never looked back. Wrestling became a way of life for him. Coached by Mike Hogan and Gary Edwards, Dubuque wrestles year round also wrestling Olympic styles in the off season under the great Joe Demeo. He is a 2x NY STATE Olympic Style Greco champion and placed among the top 12 in the nation this summer @ 126 lbs. at nationals in Fargo North Dakota. At the end of his junior year in high school he is a 2x section 7 champ and placed 3rd @ 120 in New York at the NYSPHSA. (New York State Public High School Association). He is hoping to end his senior year in the same way if not better. He has also wrestled internationally in Sweden and Amsterdam.

While several colleges have shown interest in Logan on the D1 and D2 level, Dubuque says, “I visited Belmont Abbey this summer; it’s beautiful and I got to meet the coaches (Kenn Caudell and Randy Deangelo) I was able to stay overnight with a couple members of the wrestling team and fell in love with everything about it. It just seems like the perfect fit for me all around. I’m excited they saw potential in me and I get to continue doing what I love (wrestling) for the next four years at this level. It just felt like home”.

While attending Belmont Abbey, Dubuque is also going to be committed to the ROTC Airforce program. “I knew paying for college was on me and the ROTC is making it possible for me to get a great education while not going in to debt, I’m proud to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps by serving my country. I will graduate college as an officer and hopefully be serving in the computer science field. I am really excited for my future and what it holds, I’ve worked hard to get to this point both on and off the mat. ”

Dubuque is a High Honors Student at Peru Central School and also a member of the National Honor Society. He is the son of Jennifer Dubuque of Peru and the grandson to proud grandparents Walter and Shirley Dubuque of Rouses Point.

Enjoy the Choir Tonight (SUNDAY) in Keeseville

PLEASE, PLEASE SHARE

The Keeseville-Peru Ecumenical Choir sings tonight (Sunday) at St. John’s Church in Keeseville, not at St. Augustine’s Church in Peru as pubished in Friday’s Press Republican. Already this morning I have encountered two people who were coming to Peru tonight. Go to Keeseville to enjoy a wonderful concert. Wait till you hear the wonderful bell choir.

Here’s a taste for you, only without the bell choir – “O Holy Night” as sung last night in Peru.
