The Extraordinary life of Jehudi Ashmun (1794-1828) – Monday, November 19, 2018, 4 p.m. at Lake Forest Senior Living Community, Plattsburgh, NY
Helen Allen Nerska, Director of the Clinton County Historical Association, will do a presentation and lead a discussion on Jehudi Ashmun. Mehudi was born in Champlain, NY in 1794. Ms. Nerska will tell the story of his journey and that of an extraordinary man.
Ashmun first studied at Middlebury College in Vermont. He spent his senior year at the University of Vermont and was ordained in Maine as a minister. He was an American religious leader and social reformer
who became involved in the American Colonization Society.
He emigrated to the colony of Liberia in 1822, where he served as the United States government’s agent (de facto governor) for two different terms: one from August 1822 until April 1824, and another from August 1824 until March 1828. He helped create a constitution for Liberia that enabled blacks to hold positions in the government. African Americans and their descendants, known as Americo-Liberians dominated that government into the late 20th century. This was unlike what happened in the early decades of the neighboring British colony of Sierra Leone, which was dominated by whites although also founded for the resettlement of free blacks from Britain and Upper Canada.
Ashmun’s letters home and his book, History of the American Colony in Liberia, constitute the earliest written history of the Liberia colony.
Ashmun was brilliant, driven and dedicated to his religion and to any responsibility he took on whether as an author, teacher, school principal, preacher, editor, or the principal agent in Liberia for the American Colonization Society insuring the survival of the colonists.
Participants in this presentation will learn about his short life and family which also excelled within their communities and may also be described as extraordinary individuals.
In action at its Monday, October 29, 2018 meeting the Peru Town Board:
Tabled acceptance of resignation letters from Peru Youth Commission members Beth Lozier and Carrie Smith. Lozier’s resignation was considered first. Counselor Jim Douglass motioned to accept the resolution. Melvin Irwin seconded the resolution. Counselor Jim Langley commented, “I’ve been involved in this. I’m not going to accept either of these resignations. I don’t think we’re doing right by them.” Brandy McDonald responded, “I think you’re right. I’ve had several late night conversations with one of these ladies.” Langley added, “Volunteers around Peru are at a premium, especially these two. I’m not in favor of running them off. I don’t think we’re going right by them.” Brandy McDonald responded, “I will step in line with you to see if we can resolve something further than what we have done.” At Langley’s suggestion the motion to accept the resignations was tabled by a vote of 4-0.
Responded to questions from Marquee Moffett regarding the proposed Mannix Road solar farm. Moffett is enthusiastic about this project, but is concerned about future large scale developments changing the character of the town. Supervisor Brandy McDonald said, “We still looking at it. We attended a meeting at Clinton Community College a couple months ago.” Bob Guynup said he attended along with two members of the Planing Board and Town Attorney Matt Favro. A followup Board meeting has not been scheduled. Matt Favro commented that the cost of connecting to NYSEG’s power line is very expensive and can determine a project’s feasibility. Most parts of the town would not qualify. The Mannix Road proposal has unique characteristics. Proposals in other areas would be subject to Zoning Board and Planning Board approval. Other towns, including the Town of Plattsburgh, have enacted laws regulating solar farm locations and other requirements.
Scheduled a special meeting for November 5, 2018 at 5:15 p.m. to discuss the Town’s 2019 preliminary budget.

Scheduled a ribbon cutting for a Peru Central solar project at Heyworth Mason Park for Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. Brandy McDonald commented, “The kids are all excited. I can tell you that.”

Adjourned to executive session to discuss potential litigation.

Arturo Delmoni New York City Ballet Orchestra Credit Photo: Paul Kolnik studio@paulkolnik.com nyc 212-362-7778
Arturo Delmoni is one of the most celebrated artists of his generation. His remarkably distinctive playing embodies the romantic warmth that was the special province of the great virtuosi of the golden age of violin playing. Yo-Yo Ma describes Delmoni as “an enormously gifted musician and an impeccable violinist. His playing style is unique, and his gorgeous sound is reminiscent of the great violinists from a bygone era.” Glenn Dicterow, long-time concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, says, “Delmoni’s playing always goes right to the heart, and his charisma is irresistible.”
Arturo Delmoni will perform in recital Sunday, November 18 at 3:00 pm at the Saranac Methodist Church on Route 3 in Saranac. His program opens with the brief and utterly charming classical Sonata in E Major by the Italian composer Gaetano Pugnani, a contemporary of Mozart. Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 5 in F Major follows, a lyrical work affectionately dubbed the “Spring Sonata,” and then Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in G Major, a sunny work embracing distinctive Norwegian folk idioms.
Following intermission is Hexapoda: Five Studies in Jitteroptera, a delightful suite of five jazzy pieces written by Robert Russell Bennett in 1940 sporting titles such as “Gut-Bucket Gus,” “Jim Jives,” and “___Till Dawn Sunday.” No proper virtuoso violin concert would be complete without a set of the most beloved favorites, and Arturo Delmoni will not disappoint. He has chosen Hungarian Dance in f minor (Brahms-Kreisler), Song Without Words, “Sweet Remembrance” (Mendelssohn-Heifetz), Legend of the Canyon (Cadman), Claire de Lune (Debussy), Mazurka, “Dudiarz” (Wieniawski), and Valse-Scherzo, Op. 34 (Tchaikovsky). Arturo Delmoni will be assisted by the excellent Taiwanese pianist Li-Pi Hsieh.
Seating is open with a suggested donation of $15; children under 12 attend free. For further info please telephone 518-293-7613, e-mail hillholl@hughes.net or visit www.hillandhollowmusic.org.

Thursday, November 1, (5 p.m.) at the Peru Free Library
Libraries in Peru and Mooers are getting ready to host events in early November to explain how area residents can save money with solar energy without buying and installing costly panels on their rooftops.
Solar Farms New York is currently installing solar panels on three adjoining farms in Mooers that will produce enough electricity for about 1,200 homes in the North Country, according to Nicole Graham, Event Coordinator of Solar Farms New York the company in charge of marketing solar subscriptions in the farms to homeowners.
On Thursday, November 1, the Peru Free Library will host Graham at 5 pm. She will answer questions and help residents who bring their electric bills to sign up for solar farms memberships. The next day, at 11:00 a.m., Graham will appear at the Mooers Free Library.
In July Mooers Free Library became a Clean Energy Partner of Solar Farms New York. As a Clean Energy Partner, the Library receives $100 for every customer that signs up for a solar membership and uses a Mooers Free Library promo code.
Graham said that construction of the Mooers farms is expected to be completed by January, at which time customers will start to receive credits from NYSEG on their bills. “One of our solar farms in Mooers has already sold out and the others are going quickly,” Graham said. “Signing up now will reserve your place,” she added.
The Mooers farms are among 32 farms that Solar Farms New York is building in upstate New York, according to Jeffrey Mayer, CEO of Solomon Community Solar which markets solar farm memberships.
The Peru Free Library invites you to an exhibit and sale of ceramic works by the North Country Potter’s Guild accompanied by new paintings by Beck Pace.
