Jan. 4, 2019 Peru – A Town of Peru snowplow overturned on the Reservoir Rd. about 5 a.m. this morning. The truck and plow were damaged; thankfully the operator was not injured. The accident took place on the steep hill not far from the Mother Cabrini Shrine. Highway Superintendent Michael Farrell said the sand-loaded truck encountered glare ice while ascending the hill, slid backwards, twisted sideways and overturned. The plow wing struck and severely damaged the truck’s right door, mirror and windshield.
Rock’s Garage towed the truck to its garage where it awaits further examination and a repair estimate.

From the Office of Assemblyman Billy Jones
Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) was sworn into office to once again represent the people of the 115th District in the New York State Assembly. The swearing-in took place on Jan. 3 and was administered by Clinton County Clerk John Zurlo and Franklin County Clerk Kip Cassavaw. Jones first took office in 2017.
“I’ve called the North Country home my entire life, and it’s been an honor to serve my neighbors, from my time as a correction officer and county legislator, and now as their Assemblyman,” Jones said. “I’ll always fight to make life better for our hardworking families and bring new opportunities to the region so more folks can stay and thrive here.”
The 115th Assembly District is comprised of Clinton and Franklin counties, as well as a portion of St. Lawrence County. Jones previously served as chair of the Franklin County Legislature and mayor of the village of Chateaugay in Franklin County.
Jones has fought to create more local, good-paying jobs, by investing in education and workforce development funding. He secured $150,000 for the North Country Chamber of Commerce to help spur economic growth by fostering the New York-Quebec corridor initiatives. He also secured a 3.5 percent increase in aid for local schools in the 2018-19 state budget and provided $20,000 for the Substance Abuse Prevention and Recovery of Clinton County (SPARCC) Coalition to expand local opioid addiction prevention services. He passed legislation to establish the Rural Health Council, to ensure that the unique health care needs of our region are addressed, and rejected a proposal to replace state payments on taxes on forest preserve parcels with PILOT payments. During his first term in office, Assemblyman Jones hosted 84 town halls, resolved over 400 constituent cases with state agencies and organizations, made 38 school visits, met with 173 businesses districtwide and drove over 45,000 miles to hear from North Country residents and help tackle their problems.

Easy easy to pick out your favorite Happy Meal toy
By John T. Ryan
Peru – McDonald’s fans who have visited any of the chain’s newest restaurants are undoubtedly familiar with its new kiosk ordering option. Just before Christmas, (November 26 – December 21) four kiosks, new booths with a new color scheme, new order counters and menu screens were installed at McDonald’s in Peru. The restrooms were also totally renovated.
General manager Juli Favreau said the the kiosk ordering system is user friendly. She said, “Customers are catching on. My regulars come in every morning and do it by themselves. We try to keep someone outside the counter to help. We’re trying to make it an easy transition.”
Customers ordering at the kiosks can either have food delivered to their table or pick it up at the counter. Some people don’t care to use the kiosk. Juli said, “We don’t force anyone to use it.” She added, “A few people think the machines are taking over from people. We’ve actually had to hire more people.” The restaurant has 42 full and part-time staff members.

Several of the Forest Ranger Actions for 12/24 – 12/30/18
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers respond to search and rescue incidents statewide.
Town of Keene
Essex County
Rescue: On Dec. 27 at 10:58 a.m., DEC’s Ray Brook Dispatch received a request for assistance for a 50-year-old male who sustained injuries from a nearly 45-foot fall while ice climbing the Pitchoff North Tendonitis Route. Companions lowered the subject to safety with belay ropes and requested an evacuation and medical assistance. Lt. Chris Kostoss and eight Forest Rangers were dispatched to the scene and began hiking in to the subject. The Rangers reached the subject and stabilized him in a full body splint. He was carried out to a waiting off-road vehicle and transferred to a waiting Lake Placid Ambulance. By 2 p.m., the fallen hiker was transported to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac for treatment.
Town of Crawford
Orange County
Search: On Dec. 29 at 1:07 p.m., Crawford Police Department contacted DEC’s Central Dispatch to request Forest Ranger assistance in a search for a missing 79-year-old diabetic male with dementia. The subject has a history of walking off and was last seen the previous evening around midnight. Ten Forest Rangers and several local agencies began the search but ended the day without finding the subject. Search efforts resumed the following morning at daybreak, and at 1:30 p.m., the subject was located by a search crew in an abandoned house. He was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center by a local volunteer ambulance unit.
Town of Keene
Essex County
Rescue: On Dec. 30 at 9:34 a.m., DEC’s Ray Brook Dispatch received a direct call from a hiker on the Ridge Trail of Giant Mountain reporting that their hiking partner, a 38-year-old male, had slipped on the ice and fallen 30 feet down a cliff, sustaining back injuries. The subject was mobile and attempting to hike back to the trailhead. Ranger Robbi Mecus responded to the Ridge trailhead and began hiking in to locate the injured hiker. Rangers Scott Van Laer and Megan McCone were staged at the trailhead with rescue equipment to assist if needed. Ranger Mecus located the subject 1/4 mile above the Giant Washbowl. The hiker was in significant pain but cleared of spinal cord injuries and able to walk back to the trailhead under his own power, reaching the trailhead by 12:27 p.m. The hiker was transported by Keene Valley EMS to the hospital in Elizabeth for further care.
Town of Bolton
Warren County
Rescue: At 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 30, a call came in to Ray Brook Dispatch through Warren County 911 from a pair of lost hikers on Cat Mountain along the Lake George Land Conservancy Trails. The couple had found themselves off-trail with no headlamps. The pair’s cell phones had limited battery power, and with darkness setting in, they called for Forest Ranger assistance. Under the direction of Lt. Brian Dubay, Forest Rangers Evan Donegan and Nancy Ganswindt headed to the trailhead near Edgecomb Pond. Ranger Donegan linked up with the subjects at 7:50 p.m., and they were soon back at the trailhead with no injuries.
