Utilizing High Technology to Increase Productivity

By John T Ryan

Peru – Anyone traveling down Old Town Rd. this morning couldn’t help but be struck by the contrasting crop harvesting methods. On one side of the highway Adirondack Farms’ 600+ horsepower corn harvester was filling a huge truck and clearing a 15-acre field in a matter of minutes. About 100 feet away Dwight Bennett and Devon Dubidat of Forrence Orchards were spot picking McIntosh apples by hand, the same method that has been used for centuries.

Seth Forrence explained that most of the technology he uses involves the development of new apple tree varieties. The new shorter trees yield about 1,500 bushels per acre vs. 500 bushels per acre in the old varieties.  Pickers once used heavy 20 ft. to 22 ft. wooden ladders. Today thanks to science-based tree development technology, Dwight Bennett and Devon Dubidat are using 8 ft. aluminum step ladders in a safer and more productive working environment.

DEC Advises Hikers: State Will Permanently Prohibit Parking Along State Route 73 Near Roaring Brook Falls Trailhead

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that the State is prohibiting parking on the shoulders of both lanes of State Route 73 near the Roaring Brook Falls Trailhead starting Friday, Sept. 21. The parking prohibition supports DEC’s multi-year, comprehensive effort to promote sustainable tourism and address public safety in the Adirondacks.

Parking will be prohibited on the shoulder of the northbound lane from the entrance to the Roaring Brook Trailhead Parking area north to the bridge over Putnam Brook. Parking will be prohibited on the shoulder of the southbound lane between the guiderails south of Putnam Brook Bridge.

DEC encourages hikers to discover and visit the other numerous hiking opportunities in the area. The DEC web page, Hikes Outside the Adirondack High Peaks lists a dozen nearby hikes that provide a hiking experience similar to a High Peaks hike, including great scenic views, but with fewer people. The web page includes links to trail maps for each of the hikes, in English and French.

The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) will install “No Parking” signs along these sections of the road by Friday, Sept. 21. DEC and DOT agreed to prohibiting parking in these two sections of this heavily used State highway to support ongoing efforts to promote sustainable tourism and protect public safety. There is limited sight distance because of the curve in the road and shoulders are narrow. Legal parking is not available where guiderails prevent vehicles from parking along the road to the right of the white line.

$585 MILLION IN LOW-COST FINANCING FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE

From the office of Governor Andrew Cuomo

Bond Proceeds Support Facility Upgrades to Help Students Achieve Success

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced approximately $585.2 million in low-cost, tax-exempt bonds has been issued through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York on behalf of 56 school districts. This financing is the largest pooled school district issuance in DASNY history.

“New York is committed to providing students of all ages with an education that will help them reach their greatest potential,” Governor Cuomo said. “By modernizing academic facilities and learning environments across the state, we are supporting the next generation of leaders and laying the foundation for a stronger, more competitive Empire State.”

“Our schools require the resources and services they need to provide students with a quality education in a productive learning environment,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. “The nearly $600 million in bonds for school districts across the state will allow districts to upgrade their facilities and address inefficiencies in the classroom. New York is aggressively working to ensure that all students have equal opportunities and are poised for future success.”

The issuance is part of DASNY’s School Districts Revenue Bond Financing Program, which provides public school districts across New York State with an efficient financing alternative. Since the inception of the program in 2002, DASNY has issued 90 separate series of bonds on behalf of more than 200 school districts statewide, providing more than $5 billion in low-interest financing.

Tax Collection Hours Set & More

Peru – The Monday, September 10 2018 Peru Town Board meeting was one of the briefest in recent history. at 16 minutes.

At the Board’s last meeting Town Clerk Dianne Miller asked the members for any input they might have on the office hours she was proposing for 2019 tax collections. Miller said she is trying to make her hours as convenient as possible for the public. Tonight the Board concurred with her proposal.

The Tax Collector’s published 2019 office hours are as follows:

  • Mondays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Saturday January 26th – 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Thursday, January 31st – 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Mrs. Miller said other arraignments can be made if these hours do not work for some taxpayers.

A Board Workshop on the sewer system upgrade was scheduled for September 20th at 6:30 p.m. AES Engineering and the town’s grant writer Liz Tedford will be present. The public is invited.

Both the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board do not have a full compliment of members. Code Enforcement Officer Bob Guynup asked the Board to fill any open positions since meetings might have to be cancelled due to the lack of a quorum. Cancellations can cause severe problems for a permit applicant.

Counselor Jim Langley reported that plans are underway to install new siding on the historic Lyon Street School. Town Historian Ron Allen solicited prices and a price has been submitted that is within his budget. More details will be provided for the Board’s next meeting.

CEO Guynup reminded residents that a building permit is required for both furnace conversions and furnace installations. Many people are switching to natural gas now that NYSEG is installing more lines.

A few hamlet residents asked Guynup if NYSEG would be repairing the soil torn up during the gas line installations. Guynup said NYSEG will repair soil and plant grass seed not longer than two weeks following any soil disruption.

Thankful for the Past Ten Years

The first Peru Gazette story appeared on September 4, 2008 (See below). After 10,127 stories on the website and thousands on our Facebook page stories are still being written and posted as often as time permits. One story (Tony Andrews on the Wheel of Fortune) reached 48,000 people and many reach several thousand primarily through Facebook which has almost 2,100 followers. People residing in every state visit the website.

Thank you to everyone who has been so cooperative over the past ten years especially local town officials, businesses and organizations. The level of cooperation has been amazing.

I’m also grateful to Don McBrayer who covered the Town Board prior to his becoming interested in politics, to Rodney Brown who gave advice when I first started, to Joanne Kennedy and Jim Neyenhouse for their great photos, to Adele Douglas who submitted many interesting stories and to Marque Moffett who recently began submitting great stories. Additional writers are always welcome. It’s a voluntary but rewarding experience.

Finally, I must thank my wife Jean who edits almost every story. Errors occur when I make changes after her edits.

Regards,

John Ryan, Editor
