A Great Stop for Customers From Near and Far

L-R Becky Tyler, Tomma Licourt, Kristina Dashnaw, C. Pratte, Aimee Baker

By John T. Ryan

The staff at M&M Country Store is #37 in the Peru Gazette photo series featuring people who make Peru a wonderful place to live. Located in the heart of Peasleeville, the M&M Country Store has loyal customers from near and far. Many customers find it a convenient place to stop on their way to work or when camping at nearby Macomb Park.

Longtime friends Tomma Licourt and Kristina Dashnaw have operated the convenience store-deli since October 1, 2014. They’ve been successful by stocking a wide range of household products, beverages and fresh food. The fresh-baked pizza and wings are customer favorites from a three-page menu. The availability of gasoline, non-ethanol gas, diesel fuel, a propane fill station and ice are also appreciated by their customers.

The M&M Country Store is open from 5 AM to 9 PM (Monday-Friday), 6 AM to 9 PM on Saturdays and 6 AM to 8 PM on Sundays (Beginning May 9 it will be open until 9 PM on Sundays). Call 518-643-7134.

DEC Announces 2017 Deer Harvest Estimate

Hunters harvested an estimated 203,427 deer during the 2017-18 hunting seasons, about 5% fewer than in 2016-17. The 2017-18 estimated deer take included 95,623 antlerless deer and 107,804 antlered bucks. Statewide, this represents a 10% decline in antlerless harvest and nearly identical buck harvest as in 2016.

Two items of note from the season: hunters took a greater percentage of older bucks and the portion of successful hunters who reported their harvest increased.

With 53.3% of the adult buck harvest as 2.5 years or older, hunters took an estimated 57,494 older bucks, setting a record in total number and greatest percentage of older bucks in the harvest. Many hunters are choosing to voluntarily Let Young Bucks Go and Watch Them Grow.

The portion of successful hunters who reported their harvest as required by state law increased from 44% in recent years to 50% in 2017. Along with our Take It · Tag It · Report It campaign, DEC has made the process of harvest reporting substantially easier for hunters, providing phone, internet, and mobile app options. Harvest reports are critically important for accurate monitoring of deer harvests, and we hope hunters increasingly contribute to the management process by complying with the reporting requirements.

Peru Knights Say “Thank You!”

L-R John Ryan, Bob Manchester, Bob Herforth

During the 40 days of Lent, St. Augustine’s Knights of Columbus Council 7273 conducted a 40 Cans For Lent Program at St. Augustine’s Church. The Knights asked parishioners to bring food to church each week to benefit the Peru JCEO Food Shelf. A 1,000-pound goal was set.

Thanks to generous parishioners, this past Monday Council 7273 delivered the 1,234th pound of food to the Food Shelf.  In addition, because the 1,000-pound goal was achieved, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council in New Haven, Connecticut will award the Peru Council $100 which the Council will donate to the Food Shelf.

Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council and local councils have collected and donated over $8.5 million and 14.7 million pounds of food for local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens.
