Peru –  A celebration continued yesterday. On May 6th hundreds of St. Augustine’s parishioners and friends celebrated the 40th anniversary of Father Alan Shnob’s ordination to the priesthood. On Sunday, July 8, 2018 the celebration continued at St. Patrick’s Oratory/Mother Cabrini Shrine when Father Alan learned that two beautiful benches have been installed in his honor. Jane Woods and Linda Manchester unveiled the benches on behalf of the parish and St. Monica’s Court of the Catholic Daughters. The benches overlook a sundial honoring Father Shnob’s late mother Connie Shnob. 

Father Alan Shnob has overseen the transformation of an aging oratory and shrine into one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the north country. Visitors stop daily to pray and to walk the expansive grounds where they marvel at the beautiful views of Peru and much of the Champlain Valley.  It’s a place a of peace and a place to marvel at God’s marvelous gifts to His people.

Hill and Hollow Music is privileged to be host for an “off-campus” concert by advanced students of the renowned Meadowmount School of Music on Thursday, July 26 at 7:00 pm at the historic Saranac Methodist Church on Route 3 in Saranac.  The program will offer two substantial chamber music masterpieces featuring the superb vintage Steinway concert-grand piano that resides in the church:  Maurice Ravel’s Trio in A minor (1914) for piano, violin, and cello; and Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 47 (1842) for piano, violin, viola, and cello; plus assorted works of Bach, Ysaӱe, Kreisler. Peru – Peru Code Enforcement Officer Bob Guynup has been busy during the first 6 months of 2018. As of July 1st his office has processed 103 building permits, a 43% increase over last year’s 72 permits at the same point in time.  

A building permit is required prior to commencing the erection, construction, enlargement, improvement, alteration, removal or demolition of any building, structure or any portion thereof and the installation of heating equipment. Even roofing repair requires a permit.  Guynup makes required periodic inspections as project progress. No building should be occupied or used in whole or in part for any purpose until a Certificate of Occupancy is issued.

Forest Ranger Actions for 6/25 – 7/1/18

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers respond to search and rescue incidents statewide. Working with other state agencies, local emergency response organizations, and volunteer search and rescue groups, Forest Rangers locate and extract lost, injured, or distressed people from the backcountry.

Recent missions carried out by DEC Forest Rangers include:

Town of Wilmington
Essex County
Wilderness Rescue: On June 25 at 5:32 p.m., a call came in to DEC Ray Brook Dispatch from Essex County 911 reporting a 65-year-old woman with head injuries on the Flume Trail in Wilmington. While hiking the scenic trail overlooking the Ausable River, she slipped and tumbled down a 30-foot slope, landing on the boulders along the shore. Wilmington Fire and Rescue were first on scene. A Forest Ranger was dispatched to the scene to assist with a high angle rope rescue. By 6:35 p.m., the injured hiker was lifted over the steep walls and brought to a waiting ambulance, which transferred her to a life-flight helicopter for additional care.

Wildland Fire: On June 26 at 12:34 p.m., DEC Ray Brook Dispatch received a request for Ranger assistance for an out-of-control fire in Greenwich. A controlled burn had escaped containment efforts, and multiple fire departments reported to the scene. Forest Ranger Jaime Laczko responded by 1:15 p.m. Cossayuna Fire Department, with support of other local fire departments, established a containment line with hoses and put down the fire, which scorched roughly one acre.

Fire Prevention Outreach: On June 26, Forest Rangers John Franceschina and Joseph Pries, along with Smokey Bear, attended Environmental Conservation Night at the Staten Island Yankees game. Smokey and the Rangers greeted guests as they arrived and educated them about wildfire prevention. Smokey was given the honor of throwing the first pitch. After the first inning, Smokey came to the aid of a boy who was in a tug of war with the Yankees’ mascot “Scooter.” With Smokey’s help, the boy won. Throughout the game, Rangers and Smokey interacted with more than 200 people, handing out educational materials and talking about DEC and what Rangers do on a daily basis. DEC Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) and NYC Urban Park Rangers also attended the game.

Wilderness Rescue: On June 29 at about 1:40 p.m., while on routine patrol at DEC’s Nick’s Lake campground, Forest Ranger Robert Coscomb heard radio traffic from Herkimer County 911 notifying Old Forge Fire Department of a 72-year-old woman on the Bald Mountain trail with a possible broken ankle. Ranger Coscomb advised Ray Brook Dispatch and requested additional Ranger support. Ranger Coscomb arrived at the scene at 2:05 p.m., and found that Old Forge fire personnel had splinted the woman’s right ankle and were waiting for a wheeled rescue litter. Ranger Coscomb assisted with packaging and carry out to trailhead. The Syracuse woman was transferred to Old Forge ambulance for transport to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica for further treatment.

Willsboro, NY. In-field demonstrations with agricultural specialists and growers from NY and Vermont and six learning stations are all part of the Reduced Tillage in Organic Systems Field Day to be held Tuesday, July 31, 2018, from 9 am to 3 pm at the Cornell Willsboro Research Farm, 48 Sayward Lane, Willsboro, NY. The event is free to attend.

The overall focus of the day on improving soil health was developed to meet grower requests. While the event is geared toward organic vegetable, row crop, and small grain growers, the practices discussed will also benefit conventional growers. Read more »
