Redevelopment Proposals Are Due On Friday, July 28

Empire State Development (ESD) this week issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to redevelop a nearly 300 acre, former outdoor recreation facility in North Hudson, Essex County. The RFP follows Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Master Plan to establish a “Gateway to the Adirondacks” at the site of the former Frontier Town theme park.

ESD President, CEO & Commissioner Howard Zemsky said, “The redevelopment of Frontier Town will be a major step forward in making Governor Cuomo’s ‘Gateway to the Adirondacks’ Master Plan a reality. The site has already generated interest and we will be looking to select the proposal that will successfully achieve the goals of increasing tourism, promoting job creation, and strengthening the North Country regional economy.”

Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos said, “With thousands of miles of trails, pristine lakes, old-growth forests and breathtaking views, the Adirondack Park is a world-class destination like no other. DEC looks forward to helping to create a dynamic new recreation hub, ‘the Gateway to the Adirondacks,’ that links local and regional resources to peerless and remote forest lands, including the Boreas Ponds Tract.”

The “Gateway to the Adirondacks” Master Plan will transform the site of the former Frontier Town into a world-class tourism destination, attracting new visitors to the six million acre Adirondack Park. Boosting the local tourism industry will generate economic growth in the North Country, particularly in the surrounding communities of North Hudson, Newcomb, Indian Lake, Long Lake and Minerva.

In March, ESD released a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) to solicit ideas for the Site, linking the concepts and principles proposed in the Master Plan with viable models for the development, operation and management of an outdoor recreational facility and supporting uses. ESD has utilized responses and recommendations generated by the RFEI to create the RFP.

Peru Central School District’s Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, May 30^th at 4:30 PM at the Champlain Valley Educational Services (CVES) District Office, located at 518 Rugar St in Plattsburgh.

An executive session associated with the employment history of particular persons and/or matters leading to the appointment or employment of particular persons will take place immediately following the 4:30 PM start.

No other school board or school district business is slated for this meeting.

Peru – Jake Swyers of Adirondack Farms was at the controls of a small loader this morning at Laphams Mills Park as Field #3 infield was being transformed from a grass to a clay surface.

Peru Youth Commission Vice-Chair Jennifer Madore explained, “In May 2015, Adirondack Farms volunteered the men and equipment to transform Field #4 into a softball field and now they’re doing the same thing to field #3.” Madore said clay is the preferred softball surface because the infield will be flat and drainage will be much improved. The pitchers mound will not be elevated.

Madore added, “We are fortunate to have a wonderful community and wonderful community organizations. We’re very grateful how they support our community’s youth. Currently Peru has one of the nicest softball fields in Clinton County and now we will be fortunate enough to have two.”

Youth Director John Flynn is also grateful for Adirondack Farms support. He said, “Not having to pay for the machines and personnel will save the town a lot of money and the field will require less maintenance.”

The Peru Community Church announces their summer worship schedule of Sunday worship service in the sanctuary beginning at 9am, starting May 28^th.    Following each Sunday service, a coffee and conversation hour immediately follows in the church’s Fellowship Center across the street at 13 Elm Street.  This schedule is in effect from Memorial Day through Labor Day.   Sunday school for all ages, from pre-school through adult, resumes on Sunday September 10.

Upcoming celebrations include Pentecost Sunday, June 4^th, and the annual stewardship campaign kickoff on Sunday, June 11^th. .   Recognition of ‘Dads and Grads’ is planned for Sunday June 18^th. Sunday June 25^th is Pledge Sunday when estimates of financial commitment will be dedicated as received from the congregation. The church’s Annual Meeting and election of officers for the upcoming fiscal year will be held immediately after worship.

Sunday July 2^nd marks the Rev. Peggi Eller’s one-year anniversary of her term as Pastor of the Peru Community Church.  The occasion will be marked with a special Strawberry Shortcake coffee hour following the service.

Upcoming events include the Granny’s Attic Boutique Sale on Saturday, June 3^rd from 9am to 4pm in the Fellowship Center.  More information is available by calling 518-565-6263 (Barb).  Vacation Bible School for ages pre-school through grade 6 will be held August 7-11 from 9am – 12noon, in the church Fellowship Center and in partnership with St. Augustine’s Parish.  More information and registration to follow in July.

The Peru Democratic Party meeting will be held on Thursday May 25th, 2017 at 7 00PM.

The location will be the Peru Town Hall. 

• There will be a discussion on the handling of petitions for the upcoming fall election.
• The upcoming caucus for the November election will be discussed and planned.
• There will be an election to fill open positions in the “Peru Democratic Party”. 

• The “Nineteenth Annual Salute to Labor” will be held at the Rainbow Banquet Hall in Altona, New York at 5:30 p.m. on June 2, 2017. The featured speaker will be Congressman Paul Tonko. First elected to Congress in 2009, Congressman Tonko represents Albany and Schenectady Counties as well as parts of Montgomery, Rensselaer, and Saratoga Counties. His focus includes clean energy jobs, improving healthcare, supporting women in the workplace, and expanding the middle class.

Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) announced a bill he introduced that would increase awareness about a syndrome affecting children has passed the Assembly. The measure would add pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) to the state’s health care and wellness education and outreach program (A.7614).

“As a parent, few things are more heart-wrenching than seeing our children unwell and not knowing what’s wrong,” said Jones. “This legislation will help families in the North Country get the diagnosis and treatment they need before it’s too late.”

Jones became aware of PANS after speaking with a local family that is working to overcome the disease and increase awareness. The syndrome causes inflammation on a child’s brain, resulting in a variety of symptoms, including the sudden onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder, severe restrictive eating, a marked decline in math and handwriting abilities, sensory sensitivities, tics, personality changes and anxiety.^[1]Because of the variety of symptoms, many of them behavioral, PANS is often misdiagnosed. If an infection is present, PANS children may respond well to antibiotic treatment, if done in a timely manner.^[2] That’s why educating parents and health care professionals is so critical, noted Jones.

“Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome turned our lives upside-down,” said Laura Carmichael, a mother from Plattsburgh whose son was diagnosed with PANS. “We went to almost a dozen doctors before figuring out what was causing my son’s regression and psychiatric symptoms. This legislation will help raise awareness of the disorder, so other families will get a faster diagnosis and appropriate treatment. My family and I are incredibly grateful to Assemblyman Jones and State Senator Betty Little for sponsoring this bill.”

With the bill’s passage, it now moves onto the Senate, where Senator Betty Little is the sponsor. Both Jones and Little hope the bill will soon pass in the Senate and then be signed into law by the Governor.

“I went to Albany to fight for our families,” said Jones. “This bill helps protect children so they can grow up and lead the way to a stronger North Country.”
