Owens, Langley Applaud DOT’s $2.4 Million Grant to Plattsburgh International; Grant Will Fund Terminal Expansion, Help Airport Accommodate Influx of Canadian Travelers

PLATTSBURGH, NY—Today, the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) announced it will award Plattsburgh International Airport $2,480,667.00 to expand its terminal. Congressman Bill Owens and Chairman of the Clinton County Legislature Jim Langley applauded the announcement.

“This is great news for the Plattsburgh community and for the many tourists, business travelers and residents who use Plattsburgh International Airport,” U.S. Congressman Bill Owen said. “An expanded terminal will help make travel more convenient and allow the airport to handle the growing number of Canadian travelers who fly from Plattsburgh and, in doing so, boost the local economy,” Congressman Owens said.

Located about an hour’s drive from Montreal, Canada, Plattsburgh International Airport has seen an influx of travelers crossing the border for cheaper U.S. flights. The New York Times recently reported as many as five million Canadians travel to American airports on the border for cheaper fares each year. The same article reported that the average trip costs Canadians 30 percent less when they fly from America.

Jim Langley, Chairman of the Clinton County Legislature, also applauded the DOT’s announcement. Clinton County is very happy, in an incredibly difficult year, to be receiving $2.4 Million in discretionary funds from the FAA,” he said. “Equally satisfying is knowing the county will be able to use those funds to continue our advancement of such a worthy project as Plattsburgh International, which has seen so much success since its opening in 2007. We thank our members of Congress for their help in delivering our message.”

This is the second major grant the DOT has given to Plattsburgh International in less than a month. On August 23rd, Congressman Owens announced the airport would receive $2.5 Million for improving its water and wastewater systems.

A visit to eight national parks concludes

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

By Jean & John Ryan

Bryce Canyon National Park includes some very colorful rocks which have been sculpted by erosion into pillars called “hoodoos.” Iron oxides give red, yellow and brown tints to this canyon’s limestone. The name native Americans gave to this area translates as “red rocks standing like man in a bowl-shaped canyon.” We were able to enjoy Bryce Canyon’s unique beauty at sunset after a rare desert rainstorm. (Click here for photos of Bryce Canyon National Park, Glen Canyon Dam, The Grand Canyon National Park and Zion National Park)

Traveling from Bryce Canyon to Grand Canyon, we observed the “Grand Staircase.” This has been designated a national monument and includes a series of sandstone mesas which staircase and extend from Bryce, to Zion, to the Grand Canyon. We visited the Glen Canyon Dam, a dam built to generate hydroelectric power that is distributed to cities and industries throughout the West. With the construction of Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell was formed.

One of the seven natural wonders of the world is the Grand Canyon, our seventh national park on our tour. This spectacular mile deep canyon was carved by the Colorado River. As we looked down upon the canyon and walked along the rim at Desert View Point and Mather Point, we were amazed by the beautiful layered canyon walls and one superb vista after another. As we walked along the rim before sunrise the next morning, we saw elk munching on the luscious grass in Grand Canyon Village. It was a memorable experience to see the canyon come to life as the sunlight gradually rose above the horizon.

The last national park on our tour was Zion, a spectacular gorge carved through colored sandstone and shale by the Virgin River. The Emerald Pools Trail allowed us to see waterfalls and pools along a dazzling canyon walk. Weeping Rocks Trail led to a large rock wall where water seeps down from above onto hanging gardens. The Temple of Sinawava Trail follows the Virgin River and leads past hanging gardens, pools, brooklets and towering cliffs.

Battle of Plattsburgh Parade attracted a huge audience; Peru Band was impressive

BandBy John T. Ryan

The highlight of today’s Battle of Plattsburgh Celebration was the parade which began at 1 PM. A very large crowd lined City Hall Place for the almost two hour parade. This year’s parade theme was “The Canadian Connection.”  It featured many bagpipe bands, community organizations and our own Peru Central High School Band. It was the only school band in the parade! Great going Indians! (Click here to view Peru Gazette Parade Photos)

Rev. Alan Shnob is enthusiastic about tomorrow’s store opening

Friday, September 13, 2013 – The Peru Gazette was able to record a historical moment this afternoon as Father Alan Shnob placed a sign outside the St. Augustine’s Crate and Christmas Thrift Store . The store will open for the first time at 9 AM tomorrow. Shoppers will find Christmas items, household items, children’s items and an array of books.  Father Shnob believes that store will compliment the works of the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store which specializes in gently used clothing. Many items donated to St. Vincent’s can be sold at the new thrift store.

Town and Fire Department budget process explained

During the next few weeks New York’s towns will be preparing their 2014 fiscal year budgets. Peru Town Supervisor Peter Glushko was kind enough to give the Peru Gazette a copy of two articles which recently appeared in the Association of Towns magazine. One article is titled “Town Budget Process” and the other is titled “Legal FAQ’s.”  They include good descriptions of budget deadlines, budget preparation responsibilities and tax cap requirements. Fire Department budget requirements are also briefly described. The Peru Gazette is pleased to post these articles. They are a valuable resource for interested residents.  Click here Budget Guide and FAQ’s
