OWENS APPLAUDS SENATOR LEAHY’S BORDER FEE AMENDMENT

Plattsburgh, NY – This week, Senator Patrick Leahy (VT) announced the introduction of an amendment to the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act that would bar the creation of a fee to cross the border.  Congressman Bill Owens expressed his opposition to proposed border fees earlier this year and today applauded the Senator’s move as a positive step in support of cross-border trade. “Senator Leahy’s work to block proposed border fees is spot on and a reflection of the value Northern Border communities place on our relationship with Canada,” Owens said.  “I will continue looking for opportunities to introduce similar legislative initiatives in the House and urge my colleagues in the Senate to support Chairman Leahy’s amendment.”

The proposal to study a border fee was included in the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) FY2014 budget request.  Congressman Owens joined with Rep. Peter Welch of Vermont and other Members of the House in a letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano opposing the study and any new fees.

According to the Department’s budget submission, the study would assess “the feasibility and cost relating to establishing and collecting a land border crossing fee.”  The proposed fee would apply to both the northern and southwest borders of the United States.  DHS requires completion of the study within 9 months of enactment, however Congressman Owens vowed to prevent the measure from coming to light.

Senators Schumer, Gillibrand, Congressman Owens applaud Pfizer Trade Adjustment Approval

Plattsburgh, NY – This week, Pfizer announced that their application to the U.S. Department of Labor for Trade Adjustment Assistance was accepted, opening new opportunities for laid-off workers from Pfizer’s Rouses Point facility. The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program is a federal program that assists U.S. workers who have lost their jobs by providing opportunities to obtain the skills, credentials, resources, and support necessary to find new jobs. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Congressman Bill Owens pushed for this approval in a letter earlier this year after coordinating with Pfizer and the North Country Chamber of Commerce.   They offered the following statement on today’s announcement: “We should be working every day to get out-of-work New Yorkers back on the job as quickly as possible, so I applaud the Department of Labor’s decision to approve Pfizer’s application and provide these crucial services,” said Senator Schumer. “This federal program will provide the training and temporary assistance these North Country workers need to make it through this difficult period and find new employment.” Read more »

Underground Railroad Museum will open Saturday; Opening day will feature a 9:30 am mini-bus tour of Underground RR sites

The North Star Underground Railroad Museum will open for 2013 on Saturday, May 4, kicking off the new museum’s third season, right next door to the Ausable Chasm. Opening day will feature a mini bus tour of Underground Railroad sites in nearby Keeseville and Peru. Stops include a hidden room located in a barn at the former Stephen Keese Smith farm in Peru, the Quaker Cemetery and local churches that helped enslaved people escape from slave catchers.

The museum will be open 7 days a week, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., through October. FREE admission all season. 1131 Mace Chasm Rd., Ausable Chasm, NY 12911-1704. 518-834-5180. urg@frontier.com

The museum drew over 4,000 visitors in its first year, and then close to 6,000 in 2012. It brings to life the stories of men, women and children who traveled on the Lake Champlain Corridor of the Underground Railroad before the Civil War and the local families who hide the fugitives, many of them headed to Canada. Others settled in the North Country and put down roots here.

The mini bus tour will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, at the North Star Museum, 1131 Mace Chasm Rd. Reservations are required. Please call 518-834-5180 or email ugr@frontier.com. While the museum is always free, there is a $10 charge for the tour.
