Owens introduces bill to preserve services, cut costs

Statement from the office of Congressman Bill Owens

Legislation would co-locate post offices with existing facilities

WASHINGTON – Congressman Bill Owens today introduced legislation that would help preserve vital services offered by post offices for millions of Americans who rely on them.  H.R. 3584, the Community Postal Service Preservation and Cost Savings Act, would require the Postal Service to review and consider co-locating post offices at retail facilities and municipal buildings. The bill would include post offices that have already closed and those still under threat of closure.

State Senator Betty Little comments on the tax code changes

“The goal of this agreement approved tonight by the Legislature is to encourage economic activity and job growth.  There are a lot of nationaland international economic factors beyond our control.  We need to do what we can on the state level and the time to act is now, not putting off action until next year’s session or within the context of negotiating a state budget. “Cutting income taxes for the vast majority of New Yorkers, new incentives for businesses, accelerating infrastructure projects, providing aid for storm-ravaged communities: all of this is being done to move our economy forward rather than wait and see or simply hope the situation improves.“With the support of groups like the National Federation of Independent Businesses and New York State Business Council, I’m confident this is the right approach at this time.  I’m pleased to have partnered with Governor Cuomo and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in both houses on a sensible, timely and fair plan that reflects our priorities of reducing taxes and promoting economic growth.”

Duprey: Tax cuts will benefit middle class families; spending and mandates must come next

Legislative Statement by Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey (R,I-Peru)

Today’s extraordinary session was an opportunity for Albany to raise the bar and lead during a time of partisan gridlock in Washington. Investing in our economy begins with putting more money back into the pockets of middle class families. This legislation is a fair tax plan which will effectively lower taxes on middle class North Country families. While this bill is not perfect, it is clearly a step in the right direction. Legislators are finally turning the corner from decades of tax-and-spend policies that have led to taxpayers and businesses fleeing our state.

We are making progress in repealing some of the most burdensome taxes and fees imposed in recent years while at the same time promoting economic development and funding new infrastructure projects. Lowering taxes is a vital step to make our economy more competitive. I was proud to vote yes for the good of the North Country today.

However, there remains a great deal to be discussed when the legislature reconvenes this January. In order to thoroughly assess the structural problems of Albany, we need to have a meaningful discussion of state spending and unfunded mandates. Albany has asked local governments to do more with less. It’s time the state Legislature recognized this and passed a state spending cap that works for our local schools and municipalities.

Next Week’s School Board meeting important topics

Peru Central’s Board of Education launches its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 13th at 6 PM at the school district’s community room, adjacent to the main entrance of Peru High School. An executive session associated with particular matters leading to employment, collective negotiations and advice of counsel from the school attorney will take place immediately following the 6 PM start. The school board is slated to reconvene for public session business at approximately 7:30 PM. It’s anticipated the school board will:

  • Receive a concise update on BOCES budget development from Ron Clamser, Jr., School Business Executive for the Clinton-Essex-Warren-Washington BOCES.
  • Examine and discuss the annual set of curriculum data books. There is one such data book presented by the Principal of each grade span. Each curriculum data books highlight student achievement, curriculum updates, professional development accomplishments, current strengths, and emerging priorities associated with that grade span’s curriculum, instruction and achievement.
  • Peruse the 11th annual early progress report on district goals.
  • Complete a first reading of proposed policy 9705 Family Medical Leave Act, intended to provide clear guidance to district employees regarding federal law.
  • Examine and discuss the timetable for recruitment of a successor Superintendent of Schools that was established last month.
  • Consider various options for inviting non-employee district residents to fill the various ‘community seats’ on the school board’s winter 2012 stakeholder committee that is part of the Superintendent search process. That committee will be facilitated by Craig King, the school board’s Superintendent search consultant.
  • Consider moving ahead with a successor collective bargaining agreement between the school district and the faculty association.
  • Attend to the full range of regular monthly personnel matters, public reporting, new business and fiscal matters as is customary at regular monthly meetings.

Santa visits Peru during Tree Lighting Ceremony

By Donald McBrayer

Kids of all ages came together Friday evening to celebrate one of Peru’s most cherished traditions — The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Several hundred neighbors gathered in the crisp evening air singing Christmas carols, and awaiting the arrival of Santa.

This year the tree is adorned by blue lighting to bring awareness to a nation-wide campaign to fight Juvenile Diabetes. Pat Uliva & Sue Millett, long standing members of the Youth Commission, shared the honor of lighting the tree.

Mr. & Mrs. Santa Clause were delivered promptly at 7PM via fire truck decorated in holiday style and they spent the evening as children lined up to share their Christmas wishes with them. (Click here for more photos)

See video of Santa’s arrival on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=2000343708249

Youth Commissioner John Flynn expressed a heartfelt thanks to everyone involved:

  • Mike Hanlon, Greg Timmons, & Josh Liberty who did the gazebo & outside decorating.
  • The Fire Department who decorated their own trucks & safely delivered Santa.
  • The Youth Commission, who organized the event, decorated & set up the inside, and provided the refreshments.
  • Tim’s Tunes who provided the music, karaoke, & microphones.
  • The Peru Community Church for donating the use of the Fellowship Center.
  • And finally, a very special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Clause (who look amazingly like John and Vicki Masella).
