Women’s Equality Day Forum

Wednesday, August 26, 2020, from 4:00–5:00 pm via Zoom

RSVP: dmwardell76@gmail.com for emailed Zoom link to join by computer or phone

Co-hosted by the Clinton County Historical Association and the League of Women Voters of the North Country

The public is invited to join the League of Women Voters of the North Country and Clinton County Historical Association members to mark the Centennial Anniversary of the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.

Local League member Penelope Clute will offer introductory remarks on the historical significance of the day. Michelle Cromwell, PhD., SUNY Vice President for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer will offer a keynote address, “The Crossroads: Where Democracy, Social Justice and Civil Rights Meet.”

The talk will examine the intersection of social justice, democracy and civil rights by exploring the ways that the LWV looks at and works on their issues from an equity-minded lens. “Being equity-minded requires going beyond speaking about equity which is the end goal, and to understanding and combatting the ways that inequity shows up at multiple levels” Cromwell said. The talk will also explore the ways that some voters’ issues are less apparent especially among rural, underrepresented minorities, and the poor, and the ways that this level of obscurity impacts their civil rights.
