Peru Youth earns SUNY recognition

Rob Duquette, a freshman on the SUNY Potsdam men’s basketball team, has earned a spot on the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference Spring All-Academic Team.

Duquette, a Peru, N.Y., native, is one of 59 student-athletes from SUNY Potsdam to earn recognition. To qualify for the list, students must be a varsity athlete who competed the entire season, and must have a minimum 3.3 grade point average during the semester they competed.

Peru Free Library hosting great July children’s programs

The Library’s the place to be Tuesday afternoons in July. Librarian Becky Pace has put together an interesting and varied program that will showcase songs, theatre, clowns and dancing dogs.
The shows are free and suitable for all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult. They start at 2:30 p.m. and usually run for an hour. For more information please see the flyer PFL summer, or call the library at 643-8618. Click here for information

Valehaven resident turns 106

The staff at Valehaven Home for Adult in Peru hosted a special birthday party today. Lena Martin, a Valehaven resident for the past four years, celebrated her 106th birthday.  Lena’s son-in-law Donald Gratto was on hand to congratulate Lena. Lena and her husband Arthur lived in Keeseville. Gratto married Lena’s daughter Shirley in 1947. The Valehaven staff said Donald Gratto is an attentive son-in-law, visiting Mrs. Martin two or three times a week.

Fun with Vegetables Focus of June 28, 30 Workshops in NNY — Learn with Paul Smith’s & Farm House Kitchen Chefs, Blackbird Café Owner, Sweet Core Farmer

Northern New York –  “Food is fun and the ‘All About Vegetables’ workshops are a great way for people to learn easy, fun, new methods of cooking to keep and enhance the flavors of our locally-grown foods,” says Chef Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy, a Culinary Institute of America graduate with experience as a chef in Germany, Florida, Texas, and Virginia and locally at The Point and The Lake Placid Lodge, is one of three regional chefs/restaurateurs teaching the 6-9 Eating Local Yet? Vegetables workshops. He is now among the School of Hospitality, Resort and Culinary Management faculty at Paul Smith’s College of the Adirondacks.

McCarthy will be instructing the public workshop participants Wednesday, June 30 in Plattsburgh, NY, at the CV-TEC Culinary Kitchen. Read more »
