You may have noticed this partial sign for Heyworth Village Apartments as you drive along Rte 22 in Peru. Judge Jim Kirby has volunteered to replicate its style for the Town’s new Heyworth/Mason Park sign. Now all he needs is a photo of the old sign to see what the rest of it looked like. If you have a photo of the sign please contact either Ron and Carol Allen at perutownhistorian@charter.net or Adele Douglas at chinadele1@hotmail.com or anyone at the Town Hall. Thanks for looking!

Owens, Gibson Fight to Expand Broadband Access to Upstate New York

From the Office of COngressman Bill Owens

WASHINGTON – Representatives Bill Owens (D-NY) and Chris Gibson (R-NY) today introduced an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations Act (H.R. 2112) that would restore funding to the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Broadband Loan and Loan Guarantee program.  Funding for the program would allow municipalities and organizations located in underserved, rural areas to secure funds for the costs of the construction, improvement, and acquisition of facilities and equipment for broadband service.  The bipartisan amendment to restore modest funding to the RUS loan program is supported by the American Farm Bureau, the New York State Farm Bureau, the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association, the Western Telecommunications Alliance, and the Business Council of New York State. The amendment passed today by a vote of 221-198. Read more »

The Peru Community Church celebrates 200 years of Methodism in Peru

By Adele Douglas

This past Sunday a special service was celebrated at the Peru Community Church to commemorate the building of the first Methodist Church in Peru and celebrate 200 years of Methodism in Peru. Both the Methodist and Congregational/Presbyterian Churches began their meetings in Peru in the early 1800s in the village. The Methodist Church was built in 1811 and the Congregational Church in 1833. In 1937 “two young laymen, one a member of the Methodist Church in Peru and the other a member of the Presbyterian Church in Peru were playing tennis on the community courts. They….. agreed that one strong Protestant Church in the village could better serve the people than two smaller and necessarily weaker ones.” For a period both church buildings were used alternatively. However, the Methodist Church was found to be unsafe in 1943, was sold in 1947 and raised in 1957. The Peru Community Church was incorporated in 1944. From: Anniversary Booklet, 1985, The Community Church of Peru, New York, May 11 & 12.

Three preachers led the service. From left to right, current pastor Rev. Dr. Robert Svenson; his brother Rev. David Svenson, the guest Methodist preacher for the service; and former pastor Rev. Dr. Ken Parker, who was the minister of the Church for over 30 years.

The choir, conducted by Carol Gallagher, did an especially nice job on the anthem “Blow Ye the Trumpet, Blow”, with Carol playing the trumpet. There was lots of red to celebrate Pentecost Sunday. In the Fellowship Center a Silver Tea Reception followed the service, sponsored by the Ladies Guild.

A slide show of the history of the Methodist Church in Peru, by Nancy Copeland Hughes, draws attention.

State Senate acts on Senator Little’s campground bills

From the Office of NYS Senator Betty Little

The State Senate passed two bills sponsored by Senator Betty Little  relating to campgrounds. Senate bill S.4024 was approved by a 62-0 vote. It would create a new law to address the removal of disruptive campground guests.  Because there is no law of this nature specific to campgrounds, Little said, courts have dealt with the issue by citing a landlord-tenant relationship. “This legislation would identify the reasons, or grounds, for why a person could be asked to leave a campground and the means for doing so, effectively citing trespassing laws,” said Senator Little.  “The purpose is to give campground owners clear parameters.  It would bring campgrounds in line with what can be done at hotels and motels when guests become disruptive and a threat to other guests.”

A companion bill is sponsored by Assemblyman Steve Englebright of Long Island.  The Campground Owners of New York (CONY) supports the measure.

A second bill sponsored by Little, S.345, passed b a vote of 44 to 18. It would provide a more accurate definition for campgrounds located within the Adirondack Park. Little has sponsored the bill for several years following an attempt by the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) to enact and enforce a regulation that would require seasonal campers move their recreational vehicles after a set amount of days. “We have over 130 privately owned campgrounds in the Adirondacks and many rely on the seasonal campers who return year after year to recreate in the Park,” said Little.  “Requiring that the trailers at these campgrounds be moved every year would place our campgrounds at an disadvantage to other regions where such a regulation would not be in force. “We can’t afford to lose these guests and the economic activity they bring to our local communities.  For many, camping is a safe and affordable means of enjoying the outdoors and rather than create roadblocks, we should be encouraging this kind of recreation.”

Companion legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward  has been referred to the Environmental Conservation Committee.

Dog and noise issues among topics at Monday’s Town Board Meeting

By Donald McBrayer

The Town Board held its regular meeting on Monday, June 13th. Town Supervisor Peter Glushko informed the board that complaints have been received related to both the new dog control and noise ordinances. He said, “There are a lot of big dogs running loose, and the SPCA is having a tough time boarding them all.” Dog Control Officer Kelly Allen has been instructed to issue tickets to anyone whose dog is picked up. Code Enforcement Officer Frank Slycord will be handling noise complaints during town business hours and he has been instructed to issue tickets to violators. Glushko reminded the Board that the State Police or Sheriff Department should be contacted in the event Mr. Slycord is unavailable. “Now it’s time to see if these laws have teeth,” Glushko said.
