Join Karen Land and Borage on an icy adventure in the comfort of your library

Karen Land is a newspaper columnist, writer, oral historian, public speaker, and three-time participant in the 1,150-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race across Alaska. She’s on the road year-round with her beloved sled dog, Borage, giving dog mushing presentations in schools and libraries across the country.

Please join them at the Peru Free Library on Friday, April 15th at 7pm.

Comments from a previous attendee: “We were met at the door by Borage and were completely taken in with his charm and personality.  We realize that he is a working dog but on the road he must be your best friend and companion.  We are honored to have met him. Your talk kept us spellbound for the entire two hours.  Your presentation made us feel like “we were there” and you could almost see your breath in the cold air.  Thank you for such an informative and entertaining evening.” Jerry & Polly Wagner, St Charles Library

Public Hearing on grant to improve South Acres at no cost to the taxpayers

AGENDA, PUBLIC HEARING ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT

MARCH 28, 2011, 6:30 PM

Supervisor Peter Glushko described the Block Grant for the Gazette:

The Community Development Block Grant program is designed to develop viable urban communities for low and moderate (LMI) persons, providing them with affordable housing and economic opportunities. It is administered by the NYS Office of Community Renewal (OCR).  There is approximately $40 million available for communities to use for these purposes and the limit for the infrastructure project we are looking to complete is $600,000. The Town of Peru is looking to once again apply for funding to improve the septic system for South Acres Park because of the concentration of LMI households in the park and the increased need for LMI affordable housing with the shut down of Shir-Cliff and pending shutdown of a couple more of North Country Mobile home parks for similar health problems. We feel that this project is a worthwhile endeavor and will help improve the sewer services that the residents of South Acres (approximately 80 households) receive and, more importantly, will keep a well maintained park open to provide needed housing for LMI households. Our sponsorship will cost the Town no dollars of taxpayer money as the park owner is assuming all cost involved with the reapplication process. Read more »
