Peru Democrats announce party nominees

Town of Peru Democrats nominated their candidates for the fall elections at their June 18, 2009 party caucus. Party faithful drafted Party Chairman Brandy McDonald as their nominee for Town Supervisor. McDonald said, “I have a full time job. I”ll have to think about it. If I decide not to run we have until September 25th to find another candidate.”

Building permits and site built/modular home numbers decline

Town of Peru Planning and Zoning Office statistics for 2009 through May 31st indicate a 27% decline in the number of building permits issued compared to the same period in 2008 and a 62% decline in the number of site built/modular home permits issued. Code Enforcement Officer Paul Blaine said, “The number of site built/modular homes being constructed is actually more in line with 2007 figures. Peru’s 2008 figures were an anomaly in some ways. Our building levels held up while almost everyone else’s declined significantly.” Read more »

Nova Bus celebrates its opening with an exciting ribbon-cutting ceremony

Nova Bus officials welcomed North Country community and business leaders at their 260 Banker Road plant this morning for a a gala ribbon cutting ceremony. (See today’s photos) The plant is already in operation and will be employing 190 personnel by the end of July. Nova Bus is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Volvo Bus Corporation, the world’s second largest motorcoach and transit bus manufacturing group. Nova Bus is a leading North American provider of sustainable transit solutions, including environmentally-friendly buses, high-capacity vehicles and integrated intelligent transportation systems. The company operates three plants: two in Canada and this is its first U.S. location.

300 turn out for 1st annual Randy Duprey Scleroderma Walk/Run

It was a beautiful Sunday morning in Beekmantown with over three hundred walkers and runners turning out to support the first annual Randy Duprey Sclereroderma Walk/Run. Duprey died on January 6, 2009, at age twenty-six, a victim of the chronic auto-immune disease for which there is no treatment.  Money raised from the walk run will be given to the Scleroderma Foundation. Money raised from the food sales and other fund-raising at the event will be given to two local women who suffer from the disease. The Press Republican carried an earlier story on the event.

Town Board reacts to yellow line complaints

Responding to complaints voiced by residents of Winding Brook Drive the Peru Town Board agreed to investigate removing the double yellow lines that the Town Highway Department recently applied to the town street.  The actions were taken at the Board’s June 8, 2009 meeting.  Read more »
