Board passes new OWB Law

The Peru Town Board conducted its business meeting on Monday, July 13, 2009. The Board passed Local Law #6 regulating Outdoor Wood Boilers. The amended law will be published on the Town of Peru website in the very near future. Only minor changes were made to the law originally passed in September 2008. Read more »

Peru firefighters honor their deceased chief

Bernard Rock served the Peru Fire Department for over forty-five years including fifteen years as the Department Chief. Rock passed away on July 10th and today Peru firefighters honored their leader as he was laid to rest at St. Augustine’s Cemetery. See David Brown photos

Elmore SPCA announces upcoming fund-raisers

The Elmore SPCA Board of Directors will host and dinner and auction in early October to raise money for our shelter.  Presently, we are seeking donations of collectibles and antiques for the auction which will be called by Frank Stefanick, auctioneer and author.   Please call Carol at 534-3484 or email carol@elmorespca.org.  if you have questions, or would like to contribute items for the auction.  Donations are tax deductible and all proceeds go to assist our many homeless pets.

On Friday, August 28th, the Elmore SPCA Board of Directors will be hosting an delicious all you can eat “Just Dessert” benefit from 6:30 to 9 pm at the Peru Fellowship Center.  Musical entertainment will be provided by the Back Porch Band.  Ticket information will be available soon.  Please check our website www.elmorespca.org <http://www.elmorespca.org>  for additional events’ information.

It is at these meetings from now until election day that important decisions will be made and actions will be taken. Your input is needed. We are very fortunate that we have an excellent selection of candidates.  The best ever, we now must give them our full support. This is not the time to sit back and relax. It is at this meeting where we will have petitions to be signed allowing our candidates to be on a second line, the ”Independent Line” for the November election. Plan on attending and bring a Democratic friend.

Plattsburgh’s Bridge Street Dock was an exciting place this afternoon as participants in the FLW brought the day’s catch to shore. Pros are competing for a top award of $125,000 this week plus valuable points in the hope of qualifying for $2.5 million Forrest Wood Cup where they could win as much as $1 million. Anglers take off at 6:30 a.m. each day from Dock Street Landing. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins will be held at the Plattsburgh State Field House located at 167 Rugar Street in Plattsburgh, beginning at 4 p.m. More photos follow.  Read more »

Bernard Rock passes away (Updated July 11, 2009)

Our condolences and prayers go out to the family and many friends of Bernard Rock  who has recently passed away. Bernard was a former two-term member of the Peru Town Council and  lifetime member of the Peru Fire Department, of which he was Chief for seventeen years. “Rocky” was a major influence in the start up of the ambulance services in Peru. Thank you for your many years of service to the Town of Peru.

Clinton County real estate sales trend continues while Essex County trend brightens

Statistics released by the New York State Association of Realtors (NYSAR) indicate the existing single family home sales in Clinton County continue to decline compared to the previous year.  May sales in Essex County on the other hand increased by over 80% compared to 2008. The homes that are being sold in Clinton County appear to be in the lower price ranges with a May 2009 median price of $131,750 compared to a May 2008 median price of $154,100.  This is a trend that has been in place for several months. Here are the NYSAR statistics for Clinton, Essex, Jefferson and Warren Counties:

AUSABLE CHASM TO TURN OVER ESTES HOUSE TO TOWN OF CHESTERFIELD FOR UNDERGROUND RAILROAD VISITORS CENTER

Monday July 27 will be a momentous day at Ausable Chasm. At 4 P.M. the Ausable Chasm Corporation will turn over the keys of the historic 19th century sandstone Estes House to Gerald Morrow, Town of Chesterfield Supervisor. Morrow has forged a unique partnership between the Town of Chesterfield, the Chasm Corporation and the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association. Under Morrow’s supervision, efforts to transform the Estes House into the Town of Chesterfield Visitors Interpretive Center will immediately begin. The Center, scheduled to open in the Spring of 2010, will be operated by the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association,while the Chasm Corporation will continue to maintain the grounds. AES Northeast of Plattsburgh will oversee renovations; Design Divisions, Inc. of Amherst, Massachusetts will design state of the art exhibits. Displays will relate dramatic documented stories of fugitives from slavery who traveled through Northeastern New York and the dedicated men and women who assisted them. Stories will be linked to the region’s   Waterways to Freedom–the Upper Hudson River, the Champlain Canal and Lake Champlain.

The Town of Chesterfield Visitors Interpretive Center will be a destination point on the Lakes to Locks Passage which extends from Troy, New York, to Quebec, Canada.

Covel trial is 12 days away

Peru Town Supervisor Donald Covel’s trial will begin at 9:30 a.m. on July 20th in Clinton County Court. Covel was indicted by a Clinton County Grand Jury in March 2009 on eight misdemeanor charges. The charges included seven counts of official misconduct and one count of obstruction of governmental administration in the second degree.

Peru Republicans nominate candidates

The Peru Republican Caucus was held on July 2 at 7:00PM in the St. Augustine Parish Center and was chaired by Keith Matott. Individuals nominating candidates had up to three minutes to make their introduction, while individuals nominated had up to five minutes to address the attendees. There were 201 registered Republicans and 20 guests in attendance.

The winning candidates are as follows:

Peru’s summer concert series begins this coming Sunday

The Town of Peru’s summer concert series will begin this coming Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Little AuSable River Park Gazebo with the rock & roll band “Hot Rod Lincoln.” Here’s the line-up for the concert season: 

  •  June 28 – Hot Rod Lincoln – “Genuine House Rockin’ Music”
  •  July 5 – Inisheer – Traditional Irish, Celtic Music
  •  July 12 – Roy Hurd – Adirondack Folk Music
  •  July 19 – Flashback – 50’s, 60’s Rock & Roll, Easy Listening
  •  July 26 – The Castaways – Country, Classic Rock, Folk, 50’s – Present

Hardcore Fitness will host its 2nd Strongman/Woman Competition

Peru Hardcore Fitness Center at 3452 Route 22 will host its 2nd Annual Strongman/Woman Competition on Saturday, August, 1, 2009. All spectator proceeds will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Hardcore Fitness owner Craig Recore is looking forward to the event saying he expects a large number of competitors from all over the Northeastern U.S. and Canada.  Events will be similar to those in the “World’s Strongest Man” competition. Contestants will be lifting cars and stones, flipping huge tires and pulling trucks. It should be an exciting day! The entry fee for spectators and adults is $6.00. Children 12 and under are admitted free.  The event begins at 10 a.m.

The Town of Peru has a redesigned website

The new Town Website is up and running. Donald McBrayer is now the Town of Peru’s website administrator and has just finished a month-long project of completely rebuilding the Town of Peru website from the ground up. The new site was approved by the Town Board this past Monday evening, and went online on Tuesday.
