Larger space enhances safety, reflects team’s commitment to recovery
PLATTSBURGH, NY (06/17/2022) – The University of Vermont Health Network – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) will open its new Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit to patients on Tuesday, June 21, setting a new standard for high-quality, collaborative inpatient psychiatric care for the North Country.
“This is a tremendous advancement in psychiatric care for our region. Together with our community partners and supported by state funding, our patients will have a spacious, welcoming environment in which to receive care – to learn and develop skills that will be useful to them in their lives beyond our walls. They can connect with community agencies that will support them. In addition to meeting the acute care needs of our patients, we believe our new unit will support our efforts to reduce readmissions and visits to the Emergency Department by this patient population,” explained CVPH Chief Nursing Officer Carrie Howard Canning.
Located on the sixth floor of the hospital’s main building, the 19,000-square-foot unit is nearly 3 times the size of the previous 4th-floor location. Included are activity and group therapy spaces as well as comfort and exercise rooms. “It supports our commitment to providing our patients with the very best care,” said CVPH Director of Adult Psychiatry Ken Thayer. “And helps to create positive experiences for them and the team of professionals who provide that care.”
The new unit includes:
- Ample space for best practice service delivery including exercise and comfort rooms, group therapy and family meeting space
- Staff breakrooms, lockers and shower.
- Security measures include a more open design to improve visibility, staff safety alarm and a double-doored entryway to improve flow onto the unit.
Assistant Medical Director of Psychiatry Aron Steward, Ph.D., MBA explains the new space is a reflection of the team’s commitment to recovery. Read more »

A Facebook message from Rulfs Orchard was posted at about 6 p.m. today June 15, 2022
It is with the deepest sadness we tell you that Grandpa Bob Rulfs has passed.
Bob was a true legend of Rulfs Orchard. He always loved chatting with customers and thanking them for coming in. The one place he might have been the happiest was on a tractor. We all know his passion for planting sweet corn, it was his favorite crop.
Grandpa Bob’s story has always been an inspiration to us. He came to Peru, NY on March 19, 1952, from the small town of Valhalla in Westchester County. As a little boy, Bob dreamed of owning a farm but due to his allergies was told he may never be able to make this dream come true. Despite this, he attended college and graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry with an aim of owning a small dairy farm. He purchased his first farm with four milk cows and three heifer calves, as well as 12 acres of apple trees. Our great Rulfs apple orchards began with Bob selling apples from a wagon on the front lawn of his house.

Bob saw Peru change so much during his time here. The construction of the Northway (I-87) carving through the land in 1964 was one major event that prompted him to purchase another farm in West Peru. In the 1960s he introduced tomatoes and sweet corn to the farm, in 1983, the cider mill, and in 1987, our beloved Rulfs Bakery. In 1988, his eldest son purchased the dairy farm so more time could be devoted to the Orchard and Roadside Stand.
To say Grandpa Bob will be missed is a huge understatement. He was one-of-a-kind and completely irreplaceable. We are honored to carry his name forward and be the best we can be, serving our customers and treating our staff with kindness and a smile.

Plattsburgh – The Strand Center For the Arts invited visitors to an Open House on Saturday, June 11th. The Strand wanted everyone to see what was new, especially inside the Arts Center. A Downtown Plattsburgh Revitalization grant enabled the Arts Center to transform what were second-floor offices into spacious high-tech labs and studios.
In the digital technology lab, instructor Nate Horn demonstrated the lab’s computer-controlled routers and lasers. A teacher at Beekmantown Central, Horn, teaches people how to use these high-tech machines. People were signing up for summer classes on Saturday.
Justin Collins demonstrated the lab’s 3-D printing machine capabilities in the nearby multi-media lab. People were also signing up for his summer classes.
The second floor is also home to a spacious visual arts studio and a music studio. Teachers will provide lessons in both studios.
Downstairs Nancy Armitage welcomed visitors to the clay studio. Next door at the Strand Theater, Mercedes Johnson brought visitors backstage for a beautiful view of the 800-seat facility.
Saturday’s Open House undoubtedly made more people aware of the Strand’s many offerings. Over the past several years, people have enjoyed its concerts, classes, gallery events and artisan markets. The Art Center’s second-floor improvements are another step forward.
