Do you have questions about being a firefighter

If you’re thinking about becoming a Peru Firefighter or EMT today is a great day to ask questions. The department is having a recruitment drive until 1 p.m. Get answers to your questions and see the trucks and equipment.

An unexpected gift from DOT

Photos of Peru’s new State Route 22 – Maiden Lane stop sign. NYS DOT installed the sign yesterday morning without notifying town officials.
A witness said some cars stopped and others didn’t. At one time, traffic was backed up a small distance.

It’s not too late to join your neighbors this morning

Joanne and Preston Daniels were two of the first people to arrive at the fire station with trash.

These folks turned out at 8 a.m this morning. Lions club members will be in the parking lot until noon with plastic gloves, bags and pickers. Casella vouchers are available if you can’t return the trash to the Fire Station this morning.

On Saturday, April 23rd, the Peru Lions Club is partnering with the Peru k-5 PTO to organize a Peru town-wide pickup/cleanup event to recognize Earth Day. We invite all Peru individuals and organizations to join us. Casella Waste Management has donated supplies, including bags, vests and pickers, and vouchers so people can drop off the full bags at the convenience stations free of charge. These supplies will be available beginning at 7 AM at the Peru Fire Station parking lot. The official kickoff will be at 8 AM, so bring a friend and join us. After your pickup, return to the Firehouse until noontime to return your vest and pickers.
Thanks to Casella for their support of the project.

NYS surprised Peru drivers this morning

By John T. Ryan
Peru – April 22, 2022 – State Route 22 drivers had a surprise this morning. The NYS Department of Transportation (DOT)installed a stop sign at the corner of Maiden Lane and Route 22. DOT did not notify Peru officials. Peru Town Supervisor Brandy McDonald said, “I didn’t know about it until my phone started ringing off the hook.”
McDonald said he’ll be on the phone Monday attempting to learn the DOT’s reasoning. Local opinions will undoubtedly be divided. Some people believe the stop sign is a good move, while others don’t.
The Peru Gazette thanks Brandy McDonald for the photos.
Edited at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2022, to reflect Brandy McDonald’s [lanned phone call to DOT and to delete a little editorializing.
