The Clinton County Breastfeeding Coalition is Normalizing Breastfeeding

June 8, 2021. A group of lactation professionals and advocates are taking to social media to promote and advance breastfeeding in Clinton County. The Clinton County Breastfeeding Coalition, comprised of over 10 community organizations and local moms, developed a campaign highlighting the ‘realness’ of breastfeeding and the fact that it may not always be easy, but it is always worth it. Social media followers can expect to see one post per month from June through November and will be able to interact by posting pictures of their nurslings with #ThisIsHowWeNurse.
Because of the well-documented health benefits of breastfeeding for infants, children and mothers, the six-month social media campaign is focused on encouraging and supporting women to breastfeed their babies by normalizing this behavior in our community. KayLeigh Raville, Supervising Public Health Educator at the Clinton County Health Department and Chair of the Clinton County Breastfeeding Coalition, explains “Chances are, at some point each of us will know a mom who wants to breastfeed – support and encourage her to reach her goals. A little bit of encouragement from each of us can go a long way.” Raville continues, “Sharing this campaign on your social media is one small way you can contribute to a cultural shift in which we all view breastfeeding as normal, accepted and welcomed.”
The Clinton County Health Department (CCHD) began facilitating breastfeeding policy work and baseline breastfeeding data collection in 2013. This groundwork has helped guide efforts to advance and normalize breastfeeding in our community over the past 7 years. With support from the New York State Department of Health’s regional Creating Breastfeeding Friendly Communities grant, over 100 worksites, 14 health care practices and 60 child care providers have adopted breastfeeding-friendly policies and practices; 3 new baby cafés ® have been established and 2 new breastfeeding coalitions have been formed.
The number of resources in Clinton County also continues to grow thanks to the work of community partners and grant funding. Although some of these services may have switched to virtual platforms, women can seek help from International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC’s) at the UVHN-CVPH Lactation Clinic and WIC office. WIC also has Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC’s) and breastfeeding peer counselors available. Healthy Families of the North Country has CLC’s available for home visits, phone or virtual consults. Pediatric offices are a great resource for families and most have CLC’s on staff. Families can also virtually attend Le Leche League and Nature’s Way Baby Café ® meetings weekly. Both of these models offer professional help at no cost as well as peer-to-peer support. Contact information for all of these services is located on the Clinton County Breastfeeding Resources document which can be found at www.clintonhealth.org/cbfc.
The increased support available to families is evident. Raville reports, “Between 2013 – 2017 CCHD saw an average 6.5% increase in Clinton County infants receiving breastmilk during their first year of life and a 35% increase in infants exclusively breastfeeding through 1 year of life.” She adds, “Although Clinton County has made great strides we are still well below NYS and Healthy People 2030 targets. The Clinton County Breastfeeding Coalition and its partners will continue to promote and advance breastfeeding in our community so our littlest residents can grow into healthy adults.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s June 7th COVID Update

June 7, 2021.
New York has two goals: managing COVID and our vaccination progress, and reimagining and rebuilding our state. Per the CDC, New York has done more shots in arms per capita than any big state in the country—68.6 percent of adults have at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. Today I announced that once we hit 70 percent, most of the remaining COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted. This includes industry-specific capacity restrictions, social distancing, as well as other protocols in place. Until more New Yorkers are vaccinated, large-scale event venues, public transit, and pre-K to 12 schools still must follow the State’s guidelines. But the expected lifting of our COVID restrictions is a sign of how hard New Yorkers have worked to contain the spread. We have 1.4 percent to go until we can lift those restrictions—another great reason to get vaccinated.
Photo of the Day: The Empire State Building is partnering with New York State to offer exclusive events for Excelsior Pass holders.
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. School districts can lift the requirement that students must wear masks outdoors. The State’s guidance on mask use indoors remains in place, but school districts may choose to no longer require masks outdoors, for example during recess. This change aligns with guidance relating to summer camps, where even unvaccinated campers are not required to wear masks outdoors.
2. COVID hospitalizations are at 799. Of the 70,635 tests reported yesterday, 463, or 0.66 percent, were positive. The 7-day average percent positivity was 0.51 percent. There were 206 patients in ICU yesterday, down two from the previous day. Of them, 120 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 9 New Yorkers to the virus.
3. As of 11am this morning, 68.6 percent of adult New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose, per the CDC. Over the past 24 hours, 58,807 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 19,538,790 total doses with 59.5 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
4. Excelsior Pass will be used at Empire State Realty Trust properties in New York—including the Empire State Building. From June 10 to June 26, Excelsior Pass users can take advantage of evening experiences, a special sunrise event on June 13, and discounted tickets to the Empire State Building’s Observatory.
5. More than 2 million Excelsior Passes have been issued to date. Excelsior Pass is a convenient way to get digital proof of COVID-19 vaccination—so that you don’t have to worry about losing your CDC vaccine card. It is accepted at numerous large venues, bars, sports stadiums and more. Opt in at epass.ny.gov.
6. “To-go” alcohol beverages will continue. Near the start of the pandemic, New York permitted restaurants and bars to sell “to-go” cocktails, beer and other alcoholic beverages to help restaurants stay in business. This measure has been extended for an additional 30 days. (Drink responsibly.)
7. New York’s “Vax and Scratch” Lottery program is extended through June 11. Get vaccinated at any of 10 state vaccination sites and receive a free NYS Lottery scratch-off ticket with a grand prize of $5 million. Must be 18+ to participate. Learn more.

Metamusic To Perform “Song And Dance” Program

Violin-Saxophone-Piano Trio Playing At U.S. Oval Gazebo On June 12

Metamusic, the professional violin-saxophone-piano trio that has evolved into one of the region’s favorite classical chamber music ensembles in recent years, will continue the Curbside At Harborside concert series with a concert on June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the U.S. Oval Gazebo.

Featuring Marilyn Reynolds — a veteran of performance venues from Broadway to the Orchestra of St. Luke’s — on violin, international performing artist Daniel Gordon on saxophone, and acclaimed Piano By Nature Artistic Director Rose Chancler on piano, Metamusic presents classical music that explores the singing and coloristic possibilities of their instruments in dialogue with each other. (Bios of the artists are below).

Inspired by a World Saxophone Congress performance that Gordon attended in Montreal, the saxophone recruited Chancler and Reynolds to engage in this unique musical endeavor. After reading through a stack of music written for this configuration of instruments, the three highly tenured professionals realized that they had found an ideal combination: beautifully written, under-appreciated repertoire to perform in an atmosphere of mutual collegiality and respect.

The trio has remained together ever since, performing everywhere from Finland to Texas. By continuing to mine the gems of this often-overlooked repertoire, commissioning composers to create new works for their group, and developing carefully transcribed arrangements of larger-scale compositions, the three artists have realized that their possibilities as a group are endless.

“Song and Dance” is the theme of their concert in Plattsburgh, featuring music by Camille Saint-Saens, Sergei Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturian, and Sergei Rachmaninoff, along with several composers who are not household names but whose music deserves far greater attention than it presently receives. Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance will be a guaranteed highlight, with its pulsating theme familiar to anyone who has ever seen a tense chase scene in a black-and-white movie or a Bugs Bunny cartoon, or anyone who ever marveled at the plate spinners on the Ed Sullivan Show.
