Adirondack Harvest Open Farm Week Planned for Sept. 2021

Over 75 farm tours, hands-on activities, demonstrations, markets, and more planned across the Adirondack Region

Lewis, NY – This year, rather than a large one-day event, the Adirondack Harvest Festival will instead celebrate a week filled with events at farms, businesses, and community organizations around the Adirondack Region. Mark your calendars from Monday, September 13 through Sunday, September 19, 2021! The “Free Range” Open Farm Week is designed to give folks a chance to see for themselves how agriculture, wilderness, and community can work together toward a sustainable local food system in the Adirondacks.

The Open Farm Week includes over 75 events ranging from free family-friendly farm visits early in the day to fine dining and spirit tastings in the evening. Just a few examples include:

  • Wine tastings and guided vineyard tours at Four Maples Vineyard in Champlain

  • Pick your own pumpkins, corn maze, wagon rides, and petting zoo at Country Dreams Farm in Plattsburgh

  • Birding hikes with Champlain Area Trails at Barred Owl Brook Farm in Essex, and at Ben Wever Farm in Willsboro

  • Medicinal plant workshop and plant sale at the Plattsburgh Botanical Sanctuary

  • “Featured Chef” Long Table Dinner in the garden at DaCy Meadow Farm in Westport

  • “How to compost” workshop at Up Yonda Farm in Bolton Landing

  • Victory garden tours at the Adirondack Experience, Museum on Blue Mountain Lake

DEC, Essex County, and Town of Keene Announce New Pilot Route 73 Shuttle System to Launch Aug. 21

New Pilot Shuttle Program Will Be Free for Riders and Help Manage Sustainable Visitation to Adirondack High Peaks Region

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Essex County, and town of Keene today announced the details of the new, pilot Route 73 shuttle system that will launch on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021. The pilot will explore how shuttles may help manage safe, sustainable visitation along the busy Route 73 corridor and in the Adirondack High Peaks region. The shuttle system will operate on weekends and holidays through Monday, Oct. 11, and at no cost to riders.

“Ensuring public safety and enhancing access to the world-class opportunities in the Adirondack Park is a top priority, and this new pilot shuttle system is a critical next step in our comprehensive efforts to promote sustainable tourism in the region,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos.

The new hiker shuttle route will start and end at the Marcy Field parking area and stop to pick up and drop off riders at three popular trailheads along the Route 73 corridor. Read more »

Clinton County reports 14 additional lab-confirmed Covid positives, 42% of which involve vaccinated persons

Since our 8/9 update, 14 additional lab-confirmed COVID-19 positive cases have been reported. Over the past month, 42% of all cases have been ‘breakthrough’ cases. In most of these cases, the vaccine is doing what it’s supposed to – reducing the severity of symptoms, chances of hospitalization, and death. None of these cases have required hospitalization.
Regardless of vaccination status, CCHD continues to recommend all residents wear masks indoors, avoid crowds and high-risk activities, wash hands frequently, and get vaccinated. Getting vaccinated reduces your chances of contracting COVID-19, protects you from severe illness requiring hospitalization and helps to eliminate the virus’ ability to mutate and create new variants.
Note: Our next case update will be posted on Monday, August 16.
