Code Enforcement Officer Bob Guynup reported issuing a zoning code violation to a dog & cat rescue facility operating at 692 Bear Swamp Rd. Guynup ruled the facility to be a kennel, a use not permitted at that location. He said he became aware that the facility was operating when people complained about barking dogs. The property owner can appeal Guynup’s decision to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Guynup said the zoning board would have to grant a use variance for the facility to continue operating.

Youth Commission representatives Emily Sypek and Kristen O’Jida-Blair reported an outstanding sign-up for the commission’s fall soccer program. Seventy-eight children have signed up for mini-mites (ages 4-5), one-hundred-eight for mites (ages 6-8), and one-hundred-five for peewees (ages 9-12). There has been so much interest that the commission extended the registration deadline to August 13. The Youth Commission’s Facebook page has 1,075 followers facilitating communicating with parents. More coaches are needed. After its April 26 meeting, the town ceased posting its town board meeting minutes on its website. Peru Gazette Editor John Ryan asked the board why the change of practice after posting the minutes for many years. Board members didn’t cite a reason for the change and agreed to resume posting minutes from April 26 onward.

Town officials will attempt to schedule a meeting with Peru Central School leaders to discuss a soil washout situation at the end of School Street. Town Highway Superintendent Michael Farrell stated that a pipe transports school roof rainwater runoff to a ditch near the washout area. Farrell researched the property’s history. While he couldn’t determine the owner, it appears that the town may have to repair the damage. In addition, the school will have to prevent future drainage problems. The issue falls under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Michel Farrell also reported that the highway department paved the Brand Hollow and Lyons Roads and will pave the Nelson Road this week. The town’s newly acquired paver, a used machine, experienced one function failure; however, Farrell said his staff worked around the problem and did a good job. He hopes to find and repair the issue during the winter months.

The meeting adjourned to an executive session at 6:55 p.m. to discuss possible litigation.

The Peru School Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Friday, August 13^th at 7:30 AM in the High School Community Room.  At this time, one personnel appointment is anticipated for this meeting.

The agenda will be available on the District’s website (perucsd.org).

The meeting is open to the public and all current COVID-19 safety procedures and protocols will be followed.

The Thirty First Annual Run for Jon

Last year, in 2020, an outstanding field of runners, walkers, baby joggers and 3 person teams once again participated in person and virtually to raise money for the Jonathan Evans Memorial Fund, the proceeds of which benefit local families who have children with serious medical needs. It began in 1991 to help the family of Jonathan Evans of Peru, NY with the financial demands of his cancer treatment.

The course runs through beautiful rolling Forrence Orchards.
