Governor Andrew Cuomo’s July 17th COVID-19 Message

On Monday, July 20, New York City will enter Phase 4 of reopening. Phase 4 allows for the reopening of media production, low-risk outdoor entertainment, professional sports competitions (without fans), and more. At this point, additional indoor activity at malls, restaurants or cultural institutions will not be permitted. Read more about Phase 4 here. I’m so proud of what New Yorkers have done. But we must continue to be on alert.
Photo of the Day: To help Houston handle COVID, NY has established two testing sites at local churches.
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. The number of total hospitalizations continues to drop. Yesterday, there were 765 total hospitalizations, the lowest since March 18. The State conducted 78,239 tests, of which 776, or 0.99%, were positive. Sadly, we lost 10 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. NYS is providing $1.5 million for funding for “Feeding New York State” to support food banks and local farmers statewide. We’re taking action to help ensure New Yorkers are not going hungry and have access to fresh, healthy food. This program will build on the success of the “Nourish NY” initiative.
3. Yesterday, Saratoga Race Course held its opening day. However, due to the pandemic, no fans are allowed at horse racing tracks. Instead of flocking to the races, thoroughbred racing fans viewed the races remotely.
4. A heat wave is expected to hit New York this weekend. I urge New Yorkers statewide to take precautions ahead of potentially dangerous heat conditions that are expected to begin early Saturday and last through the weekend. New Yorkers should monitor local weather forecasts for the most up-to-date information.
5. A reminder that State Park beaches and pools also remain open. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, venue capacity is reduced by 50 percent. Prior to making a trip, check https://parks.ny.gov for capacity alerts and closure announcements.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: This week, scientists released the first images taken by Solar Orbiter, a spacecraft that has snapped the closest pictures ever taken of the sun. The stunning photos taken 48 million miles away reveal “campfires” flaring around the sun.

Ever Upward,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

Assemblyman Jones: New SLA Guidance Punishes Responsible North Country Businesses

“The new State Liquor Authority guidelines released yesterday that put further restrictions on bars and restaurants point to exactly why a more regional approach for a COVID-19 response is needed. Responsible businesses across the North Country are being punished for businesses in other regions of New York that are not following social distancing guidelines. We need to listen to the data; the number of infections in the North Country remains low. The North Country has the lowest infection rate in the State and has the highest number of hospital beds available. It is unfair to place these restrictions statewide when regions like the North Country are proving that businesses can reopen responsibly, and I will continue to advocate for a regional approach that recognizes our district’s needs.”

Peru District Superintendent Schedules Town Hall Meetings on Mascot Issue

A message from the Peru School District

A historical namesake of a mascot for the Peru Central School District has been retired.  The District’s new mascot is going to be created based on recommendations to the Board of Education from a stakeholder group consisting of students, community members, administrators and staff.

Superintendent Town Hall Meetings have been scheduled for July 21st and 22nd at the Peru Central School District’s High School parking area July 21st is open to all students that presently go to Peru CSD and July 22nd is open to the greater school community.  Both meetings will start at 6:00 pm.  We are allowing 50 people to attend as per the Clinton County Health Department and there will be chairs 6’ socially distanced apart for participants.  Masks must be worn if you attend.  We will also have the events live-streamed.  We will have additional information posted on our website and Facebook page.

As part of the District’s efforts to provide a more inclusive and welcoming environment in line with its Mission and Core Beliefs, the Board believes that it has the responsibility to correct this culturally inappropriate and offensive mascot as times have changed since the creation of the Indian as the mascot.

The Board of Education is respectful of the past and the pride that was exhibited over the years through success Peru has accomplished but it is time to move forward and create a new nickname and mascot for the District.

Local COVID-19 for July 16th – Lab-confirmed positive +1, Active +2, Recovered -1, Tested +215

CCHD – Many of our residents have noticed non-compliance with mask or physical distancing requirements within our community. First and foremost, the BEST thing residents can do is consistently practice and model these behaviors themselves. Wear a mask when in public, keep physical distance of at least 6 feet from those outside your household, and wash your hands frequently.

If you are in a business or other public entity and see patrons or employees who are not following these behaviors, report your concerns to a manager or other staff member when you notice it. If no noticeable changes are made or you observe repeated offenses within the same establishment, file a “New York State on PAUSE” violation by visiting https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/new-york-state-pause or calling 1-833-789-0470. Please be as specific as possible and include your contact information so additional questions can be directed when necessary. Anonymous complaints are often difficult to follow up on because they don’t contain enough information.

Note: The lab-confirmed positive recovered number was reported incorrectly on 7/14/20 and corrected in today’s (7/15/20) numbers. This individual has not yet been released from isolation.
