Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik voted in favor today of the Protecting America’s Food and Agriculture Act of 2019, legislation she cosponsors. This bill authorizes U.S. Customs and Border Protection, every fiscal year, to add 240 new U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agriculture Specialists, 20 agriculture canine teams, and additional support staff in the Office of Field Operations. This is expected to continue until the number of specialists sustains the requirements put forward by the Agriculture Resource Allocation Model.

“It is in the best interest of our national security to ensure that our food supply is sufficiently protected from any outside interference,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “In my visits to our Northern Border, I have witnessed the need for more staffers who are specially trained in this area. I am proud to vote in favor of this legislation to provide adequate resources and staffing at our borders and protect our country’s food and agriculture interests.”

The New York State Common Retirement Fund’s (Fund) estimated return in the third quarter of the State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2019-20 was 5.28 percent for the three-month period ending Dec. 31, 2019, with an estimated value of $225.9 billion, according to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

“A strong upswing in the markets to close out 2019 boosted the Fund’s returns in its third quarter,” DiNapoli said. “Volatility remains the defining characteristic of the investment landscape, however. As we approach the Fund’s fiscal year end, we will maintain our conservative approach and keep a close eye on investment returns.”

The Fund’s estimated value reflects benefits of $3.27 billion paid out during the quarter. Its audited value as of fiscal year end March 31, 2019 was $210.5 billion. Read more »

Thanks to Beck Murphy for informing the Peru Gazette that the Sullivan Park ice rink is clear of snow and ready for skaters.

Stacy Changelo of Ausable refueled his DVT Shredder at Stewart’s in AuSable Forks this afternoon. It’s a unique vehicle which the Peru Gazette had never seen nor heard about. Stacy said it goes about 25 miles per hour. According to a YouTube video it’s great on snow and mud. The rider controls it with weight and foot shifts.

Peru, NY – 5 degrees and beautiful Saturday, February 8, 2020. Most people are dug out, but a few are not. Check on your neighbor, especially your elderly neighbor.

Very little traffic until about 8:15. School buses were getting ready to depart for somewhere. The town was working on clearing the sidewalks and a few plows were at work in driveways. The town highway crews were hopefully resting under the covers. It is truly beautiful here all times of the year, especially on a morning like Feb. 8, 2020.

Peru Central’s Board of Education launches its regular monthly board meeting on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at *6:30 PM in the High School Community Room.  It is anticipated that an executive session will take place immediately following the 6:30 PM start, and that the Board will reconvene for public session business at approximately 7:00 PM.  Anticipated topics include:

•       20-21 Budget Workshop #1
•        Appointment of Personnel

The full agenda will be available on the District’s website (perucsd.org).

All are welcome.

*The Board will conduct a Retreat for the purpose of a book study/education/training prior to the start of the meeting, from approximately 4-6:30 PM.  The Retreat is not open to the public.

Clinton County Office of Emergency Services is advising people to stay off the roads during today’s storm event unless travel is necessary.

Please share!! Please stay off the roads if you can only go out if you have to the roads are horrible and will keep getting worse!!! We have well over 12” and a lot more coming down until 8pm. This will allow the Plow drivers to clear the roads. I can’t thank you guys enough for everything you guys do!! It’s easy to say that’s their job and they get paid for it !! But most people that have a Job know when they will work and be home with family and when they will get sleep. Thanks to the Peru Highway and Water and Sewer Departments, Fire Department the Peru Town Court and all the other workers at the Town of Peru for everything you all do!! Makes me really Proud to be the Town of Peru Supervisor!!!!
