A Message from the Peru Democratic Committee

Good afternoon!

For the time being, the Peru Democratic Committee is suspending our monthly meetings. We will be sure to notify all of our members when we are able to hold a meeting again and of any big news or action items that crop up between now and then.

In the meantime, if you find yourself in need of assistance of any kind, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Several of our members would be happy to help you with simple errands, etc. If you would like to be placed on a check-in list, please respond to this email to let me know. Being on the check-in list means one of our members will give you a call to check-in on you, chat for a bit,  and see if you need anything from the grocery store or pharmacy. If that sounds like something you’d like, drop me an email and I’ll get you set up.

On a personal note: I hope you are well and in good spirits despite the challenges we are facing today. Though we cannot gather together as we might like to do, we can still be here for one another.

With warm regards,
Marque Moffett
Secretary
Peru Democratic Committee

Stefanik Leads Letter to House Leadership Urging Pause in Federal K-12 Requirements During COVID-19 Crisis

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is leading a letter to Speaker Pelosi and Leader McCarthy urging passage of temporary legislative authority for the Secretary of Education to proactively waive all federal testing, accountability, and fiscal requirements for elementary and secondary schools.

“With schools focused on ensuring students have access to meals and finding ways to continue learning during closures, the federal government needs to provide more certainty and relief,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “Teachers and school leaders have enough on their plates – it is time for a one-year pause on all federal testing requirements. Secretary DeVos has taken steps in her power to allow states and districts to pursue testing waivers because of the COVID-19 crisis. However, these steps do not eliminate burdensome paperwork and uncertainty for local school districts. A blanket waiver will require congressional action, and I urge my colleagues in the House to come together to ease the burden on teachers and school districts.”

Stefanik Cosponsors Legislation to Move American Pharmaceutical Production Out of China

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is a cosponsor of the Protecting our Pharmaceutical Supply Chain from China Act, legislation that would take precautions to track Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, prohibit purchases from China by the Department of Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Defense over a two year phase-in, create transparency in the supply chain, and provide incentives for manufacturing pharmaceuticals and device manufacturing in the United States. This legislation is being led by Senator Tom Cotton in the Senate and Congressman Mike Gallagher in the House of Representatives.

“China ran a disinformation campaign to cover up the coronavirus crisis for weeks, putting the rest of the world at a disadvantage in combating the spread,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “The time has come for Congress to take serious action to move United States pharmaceutical production out of China. We have become far too dependent on China, and it is time that we equip our domestic pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to be able to efficiently produce these items here in the United States. Creating this transparency in the supply chain should bring security not only to our pharmaceutical supply chain, but also to the American people who rely on their products for their own personal health needs.”

Stefanik Encourages All NY-21 Companies and Businesses to Partner and Donate Masks and PPE Items to County Public Health Officials

Glens Falls, NY – Congresswoman Stefanik is partnering with state and local officials, county health departments, and hospitals to urge the public to donate medical personal protective equipment to our county public health departments who are in need.

“Many of our local business and manufacturers are going above and beyond to pull together as a community. It is truly inspiring to see the strength and heroism throughout the region,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I have personally participated in many of the county conference calls with public health officials across our district and one of the top concerns is access to necessary medical personal protective equipment. We need to work together as a community and I am encouraging and asking all NY-21 private businesses, especially our construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure companies, to donate masks and personal protective equipment to our county public health teams who are in need. I want to thank the countless local businesses and manufacturers for already stepping up to help combat and beat Coronavirus.”

Please call one of Congresswoman Stefanik’s offices or your county public health office if you have PPE you would like to donate.

Plattsburgh, March 19, 2020. A second case of COVID-19 has been confirmed m Clinton County. The Clinton County Health Department (CCHD) learned of this case on Wednesday evening and immediately began the process of contact tracing. Staff are identifying and reaching out to all individuals who may have had close contact with the infected individual. Any person who may be at risk will receive mfonnation and guidance from CCHD. This case is not connected to the first identified case. The individual is isolated at home.

“This brings the total number of  confirmed cases in Clinton County to two with another case in Essex County,” states John Kanoza, Director of Public Health for Clinton County. “While not unexpected, these local confirmed cases should remind us how important it is to follow the recommended steps, such as social distancing, to prevent illness and contain the spread of COVID-19.”

For most people, COVID-19 produces mild symptoms. Certain individuals, however, including older adults and those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk. Stopping or slowing the spread of COVID-19 can save lives. With or without testing, there are steps we can take.

“If you think you may have come in contact with a person who is sick with COVID-19, please self-quarantine by staying at home,” states Erin Streiff, Director of Health Care Services for the Clinton County Health Department. “If you are ill with symptoms that include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, self-isolate at home. Separate yourself from other family members by using a separate bedroom and bathroom if possible. Family members of sick individuals should also self-quarantine. Residents with severe or life-threatening illness should immediately call 9-1-I1”

If you have been determined to be a close contact of a person diagnosed with COVID-19, Clinton County Health Department will contact you directly.
