Stefanik Sends Letter to Senate Leadership Requesting Further Support for Small Businesses and Workers During COVID-19 Crisis

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik sent a letter to Senate Leadership with a bipartisan group of her colleagues requesting additional support for small businesses, employees, and workers who may not be traditionally covered by unemployment insurance. During this COVID-19 crisis, many freelance employees or independent contractors in the small business world are not covered by traditional unemployment insurance.

Additionally, during unprecedented times like these, it is vital for small businesses to have available cash flows to remain operational and to pay their employees.

This letter urges the Senate to:
Include the expansion of supplemental unemployment assistance for workers who have been impacted by these adverse economic conditions.
Bolster the SBA 7a loan guaranty program by raising the maximum loan guaranty percentage to a minimum of 90%.
Include language in their emergency stimulus package that allows more individuals and businesses to utilize the House-passed paid leave tax credits.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our North Country economy, and they must be protected during this unprecedented crisis,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I urge the Senate to prioritize the unique needs of small businesses, employees, and workers in order to avoid closures and financial disruption for hardworking families. I have spoken directly with many small businesses in my district and have assured them I am working hard on legislative solutions. During this crisis, Congress must lead on protecting the American worker.
