“Lock Your Stuff UP”

By John T. Ryan

“Lock your stuff up!” Those were the words of Peru Town Supervisor Brandy McDonald at the November 25th town board meeting. McDonald cited 27 break-ins in Peru and nearby towns over the past week and one-half. In Peru most burglaries have been in the hamlet and at homes north of the hamlet. Garages, homes and vehicles have all been entered. McDonald said security videos indicate that both young men and older adults appear to be the perpetrators.

NYS Crackdown on Impaired and Distracted Driving Over Thanksgiving Holiday

Law Enforcement Will Also Target Speeding and Move Over Law Violations
More than 15,100 tickets issued and 215 people arrested for DWI statewide during last year’s enforcement
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies will participate in a special traffic enforcement initiative to crack down on unsafe driving behaviors during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. The special traffic enforcement period runs from Wednesday, November 27 through Sunday, December 1, 2019.
The State Police will supplement regular patrols statewide, including fixed sobriety checkpoints, underage drinking enforcement and the “Operation Hang Up” initiative, which targets distracted drivers by utilizing Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement patrol vehicles to better locate drivers talking or texting on hand held devices. These unmarked vehicles blend in with every day traffic but are unmistakable as emergency vehicles once the emergency lighting is activated.
Very high traffic volumes typically occur during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. It is also a time when alcohol consumption is widespread. During the 2018 Thanksgiving holiday period, troopers arrested 215 drivers for DWI, issued 5,834 speeding tickets, 774 tickets for distracted driving, and 218 tickets for move over law violations.
If you drive drunk or drugged, you not only put your life and the lives of others at risk, you could face arrest, jail time, and substantial fines and attorney fees. The average drinking and driving arrest costs up to $10,000. Arrested drunk and drugged drivers face the loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, and dozens of unanticipated expenses from attorney fees, fines and court costs, car towing and repairs, and lost time at work.
The New York State Police, GTSC and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommend these simple tips to prevent impaired driving:
Plan a safe way home before the fun begins;
Before drinking, designate a sober driver;
If you’re impaired, use a taxi or ride sharing service, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation;
Use your community’s sober ride program;
If you suspect a driver is drunk or impaired on the road, don’t hesitate to contact local law enforcement;
If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

DEC Campground Ambassador Program Expanded for 2020 Camping Season

State Encourages New Yorkers to Volunteer to be “Campground Ambassadors”

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the opening of the 2020 application period for the Campground Ambassador program. As part of the state’s Adventure NY initiative to connect more New Yorkers with the outdoors, Campground Ambassadors volunteer to assist DEC campground staff to welcome and assist the millions of visitors who vacation in the Adirondack and Catskill parks each year.

“In 2019, its second year, DEC’s Campground Ambassador Program more than doubled its applicants and grew to offer more than 300 fun, educational, and meaningful programs at nine participating facilities,” Commissioner Seggos said. “The Campground Ambassadors have been so successful that we are expanding the program to six new campgrounds in 2020, providing even more opportunities to introduce new visitors to DEC facilities and activities and offering fun and exciting programming for campers.”

DEC is encouraging New Yorkers with a passion for camping and the outdoors to help introduce new campers to DEC facilities and other outdoor activities. Ambassadors also aid in connecting campers and day users to nature through environmentally themed activities and programming.

Ambassadors will serve for two weeks, between July 1 and Labor Day. In consideration for services provided, a campsite will be provided for the duration of their stay at one of the following participating locations:

Peru Federal Credit Union Opens Keeseville Branch

L-R Nicole Prentiss, Maggie Pope, Sarah Sherman

By John T. Ryan

Keeseville – Keeseville residents were shocked when they learned TD Bank would close its local branch on November 15th. Only an ATM remains; however, there was good news on November 13th when the Peru Federal Credit Union (PFCU) opened at 187 Pleasant St. Why establish a new branch when another institution is closing its doors? PFCU’s CEO /Manager Maggie Pope explained, “We understand that small communities need a financial institution. Many people are still looking for person to person contact. Our motto has always been ‘People Serving People.’”

Pope said opening a Keeseville branch makes business sense. “We did our research. The Towns of AuSable and Chesterfield have the population and businesses (65) to support a financial institution. Many roads come right into Keeseville and it’s in the center of our company triangle now that we have offices in AuSable Forks, Keeseville and Peru.” An AuSable Forks native, Pope is enthusiastic about serving people in and around her hometown.

“Establishing an AuSable Forks branch in October 2018 gave the credit union exposure and encouraged growth,” Pope stated. “In the past 12 months our loans have grown 22% and membership has grown almost 20%. We have over 3,000 members. Here in Keeseville we’ve signed up 25 new members in the first five business days.”

The Keeseville office is admittedly small, but that’s not expected to last long. Pope said, “We’re looking for land and we plan to construct a new building. I hope we can have it operational in about a year.” In the meantime, the current office across from Arnold’s Grocery is well located and easy to access.

Pope said some people don’t understand who can belong to the PFCU and the services it offers. Anyone living, working, worshipping, attending school or volunteering in either Clinton or Essex Counties is eligible to become a member. She added,  “We’re a full service financial institution with checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, business and personal accounts, car loans, personal loans and mortgages. We offer online banking. Members can scan a check using our smart phone app and deposit it directly into their accounts.  Our online accounts are compatible with the Quickbooks accounting program and all accounts are ensured by the National Credit Union Association.”

Keeseville’s PFCU branch hours of operation are 8 to 4 Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesday and 8 to 5 Thursdays and Fridays. Phone 518-825-1354 for information.
