Slavery is not just a southern story.  In fact, New York was the epicenter of slavery in the early colonial world.  From Boston to Plattsburgh, and up and down the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys, enslaved persons were an important part of the labor market and helped build wealth in the society. The first American slave code was written in Massachusetts.

Peter Slocum, a longtime tour guide with the North Star Underground Railroad Museum, explores untold stories of northern Slavery, including some discoveries close to home.

The event is free and open to the public.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.-      Adirondack Regional Theatre announces it will be staging the Arthur Miller classic “The Crucible” at the Strand Theatre in Plattsburgh February 8, 9 and 10.

Arthur Miller’s searing timely American drama is about what can happen when truth is bent to political convenience. No one is safe as a reign of terror rips through 1692 Salem. Led by Abigail Williams, a group of girls who claim to have seen the Devil, hurl out charges of witchcraft, sending those who won’t confess to the noose. When the accusing finger points to his wife, John Proctor is forced to confront his past and determine his future. Neil Battinelli and Stacey Senecal both of whom got their start acting while at Peru star as Abigail and John. Other Peru High grads in the show include, Jonathan Berry, Sean Brace, Danielle Criss, and Dorina Falvo.

Adirondack Regional Theatre (ART) will be presenting the first locally produced drama on the stage of the renovated Strand Theatre. Tickets are available at the Strand Center Box office and online at www.strandcenter.org.

Although it was written in 1953, Arthur Miller’s drama holds particular significance in the current political environment. Miller said: “I can almost tell what the political situation in a country is when the play is suddenly a hit there – it is either a warning of tyranny on the way or a reminder of tyranny just past.” Salem in the 17th century was a place where fear was used as a political tool, where outside threats were invented to explain current woes, where scapegoats were identified, hunted down and judged, and where truth holds no currency.

Dana Berry will be directing the timeless play and pivotal work. The cast will bring to life on the Strand stage this tale of caution that warns of the deadly consequences when a society allows fear, suspicion and superstitious gossip to rule over facts.

This project is made possible with the funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik co-led Rep. Delgado’s amendment to H.R. 840 – the Veterans’ Access to Child Care Act. This amendment allows for child care to be provided by the VA for veterans in need of emergency mental health services, something that was unaccounted for in the bill.

“The Veterans’ Access to Child Care Act is an important first step in providing veterans with free child care during VA health care appointments,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. Read more »

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the completion of an aerial Adirondack moose survey that takes place each year as part of a collaborative study of the health of New York’s moose population. A total of 83 groups of one or more moose were observed during the survey’s 175 sightings, with all appearing healthy.

“Moose are a charismatic and iconic animal here in New York and important research like the aerial survey is key to maintaining a strong population,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. “I applaud the work of DEC’s expert wildlife staff and our many partners as we work together to keep a close eye on New York’s moose.”

After an absence of 120 years, moose recolonized New York in the 1980s. Since that time, biologists have been routinely monitoring moose in the state, informing the public about moose, and responding to situations where moose come into conflict with people. Read more »

Washington, D.C. – Today, the United States Department of Transportation announced it has selected SkyWest Airlines to provide Essential Air Service (EAS) to Massena and Ogdensburg, New York. SkyWest will use a 50-passenger Canadair Regional Jet to provide twelve round trips per community each week to Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. This two-year contract will enable North Country residents to reach two of the country’s major transportation hubs. Sky West Airlines will receive a total annual subsidy of $5,997,626.

“The U.S. Department of Transportation’s decision to award SkyWest Airlines EAS funds is a huge win for the North Country,” said Congresswoman Stefanik.“Not only will the communities of Massena and Ogdensburg have more travel options, but these added flights will attract more tourists to our region, which will in turn bolster economic development in the region. My office diligently advocated for this award, and I’m thrilled to see it has come to fruition.”

PURCHASE, NY (02/06/2019)– Hannah Osborne of Peru, NY, has been named to Purchase College’s Dean’s List for the fall 2018 semester. Osborne is studying Theatre Design/Technology.

To be eligible for the Dean’s List, students must carry a semester GPA of 3.5 for Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science programs and 3.75 for Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music Performance programs. They must take a minimum of 12 credits.
