The Peru Central School District Hall of Fame is accepting nominations for potential candidates.  The District Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals who have made a significant impact on our school or achieved an outstanding contribution(s) to society as a graduate of Peru CSD. The candidate must have attended, been employed, served or contributed to Peru CSD in some capacity and must have been retired for at least five (5) years.

The following criteria will be used when considering an individual to the Hall of Fame – outstanding contributions to Peru CSD, outstanding contribution to society, outstanding career, participation and/or leadership in community activities, and a significant impact on an individual’s life while associated with Peru.

Deadline for applications will be March 28, 2019.  Applications are available at the Jr/Sr High School office or the District website.

The Town of Peru Water and Wastewater Department is accepting applications for the position of Maintenance Worker1 / Maintenance Worker 2 if qualified.

Duties
Primarily assist in the operation and maintenance of the two wastewater facilities during an assigned shift.
Assists in the operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment facility, water distribution system and sewage collection systems.
Does related work as required.

Distinguishing Features:
Performs work under the direct supervision of the plant operator or other operations personnel. Learns the duties and routines necessary for the proper operation and maintenance of the wastewater and water treatment plants. Becomes familiar with the sewage collection and water distribution system and components. Is expected to become proficient in various tasks and carry them out independently when qualified.

Illustrative examples of work:
Learns and/or assists in starting and stopping pumps, motors, air compressors, and related machinery and equipment. Learns to and/or assists in taking samples, in recording readings from meters and gauges. Learns to and/or assists in making necessary tests for control of plant operation. Performs custodial duties in and around plant. Assist other personnel in the wastewater collection and water distribution systems. Ability to work outside in all weather conditions. Weekends, holidays and emergency on call status as required. Reads/removes and repairs water meters in the homes of customers. Assist in the repair of sewage collection and water distribution system piping. Checks sewage pump stations and assist in repairs and pump replacement.

Required knowledge and skills:
Knowledge of basic chemistry and basic science is desirable but not necessary. Ability to learn principles and procedures relating to the operation and maintenance of a wastewater and water treatment plant. Ability to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions. Ability to read and understand blueprints and equipment manuals. Mechanical aptitude to learn, alertness, dependability, together with a desire to learn and progress. Ability and willingness to further pursue education and training to become certified as 2A wastewater operator and 2A water treatment plant operator. (At Towns Expense)

Minimum Qualifications Maintenance Worker 1.
(a) One (1) year of experience in the construction and maintenance of water or sewage lines; or
(b) Two (2) years’ experience as a skilled worker in two or more mechanical trades including carpentry; or
(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Eligibility of an appropriate New York State Driver’s License at time of application. Possession of license at time of appointment. Class B preferred and required within 1st year.

Minimum Qualifications Maintenance Worker 2.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
(a) Two (2) years of experience in the construction and maintenance of water and sewage lines; or
(b) Three (3) years experience as a skilled worker in two or more mechanical trades including carpentry; or
(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above. Also, where required, possession of either:
1. A current appropriate grade-level Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for the designated plant classification as governed by the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code; or
2. A current appropriate grade-level Water Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Health for the designated plant classification as governed by the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code;

Peru – “People don’t believe I’m 86 years old. Who do you know in their mid-80’s who works with a bunch of kids and has a good time?” That’s how Roy Perry describes his experience for the past 7 1/2 years as a volunteer at the Peru Elementary School. For 90-minutes, four mornings each week Roy helps second graders develop their reading skills. Working at a table at one of the school’s entrances he typically works for five to ten minutes with each student. Roy said, “The kids read a story. I time them, measure their progress and then I ask questions about the story. I try to get them thinking about what they’re reading. I always make sure to tell the kids they’re doing OK or outstanding. I always give them positive input.”

While the reading program is structured, Roy Perry’s approach to the program is fun-filled. His quick wit, smiles and jokes enliven each lesson. Roy commented, “I tell them reading is fun. They can travel anywhere in the world by reading. I had one kid laughing so hard one time he fell off his chair.” Many students look forward to cuddling Larry the Lion, a mascot that Roy brings to school each day. Roy tells the kids that Larry loves to hear them read. At the end of each session Roy draws a funny Goofy face on the student’s paper.

Roy Perry has worked closely with Reading Intervention Coordinators Tierra Jaquish and Nicole Robbins. Tierra Jaquish said, “The kids love going to Mr. Perry. That’s a big highlight of their day. I am not sure that there are enough words to describe how truly lucky the second graders are to have Mr. Perry working with them.” Nicole Robbins commented, “Mr. Perry exemplifies a selfless man who takes time out of his day to support kids with reading. He lets the kids know they’re important and with hard work they can do anything….He amazes us with his intuitive nature towards the students. His smile and the twinkle in his eye are so contagious that it makes you want to be a better human being.”

Second grade teacher Bette Crowningshield said, “Mr. Perry is a gem. He works tirelessly with our students to increase their reading fluency…As we know the more time children read, the stronger a reader they become. Mr. Perry knows that and he’s up to the job.”

Roy Perry also knows that volunteering at the Peru Elementary School is an important part of his life. Retired for 22 years, he’s an active member of the Peru Community Church and the Peru Lions Club, but by the end of each summer he’s anxious for school to begin. He said, “When summer comes I almost go into withdrawal. I really miss going to school, interacting with the kids and teachers. This is one of the best things I could have done for myself in retirement. It’s been a great ride. I find it keeps me thinking young.”

The Peru Elementary students and staff agree. They would say Roy Perry not only thinks young, but acts young. He is truly a gem!

OSWEGO, NY (02/05/2019)– Connor M. Douglass of Peru, a junior majoring in broadcasting and mass communication, earned Deans’ List recognition at SUNY Oswego for the fall 2018 semester.

Douglass was among SUNY Oswego students who received a grade point average of 3.3 to 3.79. Oswego students receiving a GPA of 3.8 to 4.0 earn President’s List recognition.

Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) announced that a new law, which he helped pass so more veterans can gain access to benefits, is going into effect (Ch. 322 of 2018). The law ensures that veterans are given proper assistance and informed of the benefits they’re entitled to when dealing with state agencies.

“Veterans have made countless sacrifices to keep us and our country safe, and for that, we owe them indescribable gratitude,” Jones said. “We need to do everything we can to show the brave men and women who have served our nation how much they mean to us. North Country veterans shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to get health benefits or information about the assistance they’ve earned.”

Jones supported the legislation as it moved through the Assembly last year. The new law requires state agencies and local governments to ask their customers whether they or a family member is a veteran to ensure more veterans learn about assistance and benefits available through the state Division of Veterans’ Affairs or local veterans’ service agencies. This information is kept private and is only used to inform the veteran of benefits and assistance they may not already be receiving.

Incident Rate Ties Lowest Annual Total in History, Past Six Years are Safest on Record

The 2018 hunting seasons in New York tallied the lowest number of recorded hunting-related shooting incidents (HRSIs) and tied the 2016 mark – 13 – as the safest on record, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. DEC documented five tree stand incidents and zero fatalities in 2018, down from 12 tree stand incidents the previous year.

“The tradition of hunting is enjoyed by nearly 600,000 New Yorkers and visitors each year, and the declining number of hunting incidents prove that today’s generation of hunters continue to be the most safety conscious,” said Commissioner Seggos. “In large part, hunting in New York continues to be a safe and enjoyable activity thanks to the efforts of 2,600 DEC staff and volunteer hunter education program instructors that teach nearly 50,000 students each year.”

Of the 13 HRSIs that occurred last year, seven were two-party firearm incidents, six were self-inflicted, and three resulted in fatalities that could have been prevented if hunting safety rules and common sense were followed. Of the three fatalities, two were self-inflicted and caused by unsafe handling of firearms and one was a two-party firearm incident caused by a failure to positively identify the target.
