From the Office of Governor Andrew Cuomo
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced 14 transformational projects for Watertown as part of the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award. In addition to the DRI funding, $4 million has been awarded through SUNY 2020 to support a Jefferson Community College expansion project downtown. The strategic investments in downtown Watertown will drive further economic growth and capitalize on the city’s historic buildings and culture. The investments are part of the Governor’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the upstate economy and create more opportunities for the North Country.
“Watertown is growing its economy around the strong culture, beautiful architecture and community spirit found across the North Country,” Governor Cuomo said. “With this investment, the city can build upon its success and drive further growth downtown while providing more opportunities for residents and businesses to lead a quality life across the region.”
Watertown was named a DRI Round 2 winner in October. The city’s downtown is a compact, intact 19th Century central business district centered on an historic Public Square with a mix of retail and professional services, offices, civic buildings, and cultural and recreational destinations. It also contains a variety of housing types at different levels of affordability. The projects announced today will amplify the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance its downtown through place making and adaptive reuse of historic and architecturally significant properties; improving walkability; and increasing opportunities for commerce. The city will strengthen its position as the primary hub of commerce and culture for Jefferson and neighboring counties, drawing residents from surrounding areas to its downtown assets and attracting visitor spending from seasonal residents and tourists.
The specific projects to be funded through the DRI include: Read more »

Peru – A celebration continued yesterday. On May 6th hundreds of St. Augustine’s parishioners and friends celebrated the 40th anniversary of Father Alan Shnob’s ordination to the priesthood. On Sunday, July 8, 2018 the celebration continued at St. Patrick’s Oratory/Mother Cabrini Shrine when Father Alan learned that two beautiful benches have been installed in his honor. Jane Woods and Linda Manchester unveiled the benches on behalf of the parish and St. Monica’s Court of the Catholic Daughters. The benches overlook a sundial honoring Father Shnob’s late mother Connie Shnob.
Father Alan Shnob has overseen the transformation of an aging oratory and shrine into one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the north country. Visitors stop daily to pray and to walk the expansive grounds where they marvel at the beautiful views of Peru and much of the Champlain Valley. It’s a place a of peace and a place to marvel at God’s marvelous gifts to His people.

Peru – The Town of Peru Democratic and Republican parties have announced their nominees for Town Clerk, Town Council, and Town Justice for the November 2018 election.
The Democrats nominated Kregg Bruno for the open one-year Town Board position. Bruno served on the Board from 2009-2015.
The Democrats endorsed Republicans Dianne Miller for the three-year Town Clerk position and incumbent Lawrence Cabana for Town Justice.
Peru Republicans nominated Richard (Ricky) Barber for the one-year Town Council position and Republicans Dianne Miller and Lawrence Cabana for the Town Clerk and Town Justice positions.
The Town Clerk three-year term completes Kathy Flynn’s four-year term. Flynn was reelected in November 2017, but resigned to take a position as Manager of Apple Valley Senior Housing. The Town Board appointed Dianne Miller to the Town Clerk position in January.
The Town Council winner will complete the last year of Brandy McDonald’s four-year term of office. McDonald resigned from the Town Board to run for Town Supervisor. The evenly split Republican-Democrat Board could not agree on appointing a successor to McDonald.
The Town Justice position is a full four-year term of office.
The Peru Gazette will request interviews with all the candidates a few weeks prior to the November election.
