The State Senate today gave final legislative approval of a measure to include Chazy Lake on the Department of State’s list of designated inland waterways.  The bill’s sponsor, Senator Betty Little, said the designation will make the lake eligible for state Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) funding.

“Chazy Lake is beautiful and a tremendous asset,” said Little.  “Protecting the lake while boosting recreational opportunities will have many benefits in the years ahead.”
 
Dannemora Town Supervisor Bill Chase wrote to Little in August 2017 requesting legislation to include Chazy Lake on the state’s list of designated waterways.  

According to the New York Department of State, benefits to a community preparing an LWRP include clear direction, technical assistance, State and federal consistency, and financial assistance, including State and Federal Grants. It can significantly increase a community’s ability to attract private and public resources to advance a community’s vision and respect the unique cultural and natural characteristics of its waterfront.

Companion legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Billy Jones had passed the Assembly in April.  The legislation will be sent to the governor for his consideration.

    AUSABLE CHASM, N.Y., June 3, 2018— The North Star Underground Railroad Museum has enhanced its popular mini-bus tours of Antislavery and Underground Railroad sites in Keeseville and Peru. Now, photo albums help passengers follow the narrative. New information has been added on the Episcopal and Wesleyan Churches, and passengers hear the recently discovered story of a man who escaped from Baltimore, Maryland, and reached Canada via Albany, Saratoga, Warren, Essex and Clinton Counties.

Guided tours on an air-conditioned 12 passenger mini-bus will be offered on the first and third Saturday every month until Columbus Day. These special tours are an opportunity to learn about the North Country’s links to the National Underground Railroad.  Passengers hear about heroes and heroines, pastors and publishers, and conflicts in churches. They visit a root cellar that was a hiding place.

The Champlain Line of the Underground Railroad was a network of individuals who helped hundreds of self-emancipated African Americans escape to freedom before the Civil War. Most found refuge in Canada, but some risked staying in the North County.

2018 tour dates are: June 16, July 7, July 21, August 4, August 18, September 1, September 2, September 15, and October 6. Tours leave the North Star Underground Railroad Museum, 1131 Mace Chasm Road, Ausable Chasm, NY, at 9:30 A.M. The cost is $10 per person. This is a popular tour, and only 12 seats are available. Peru – The Peru Youth Commission hosted the Clinton County Baseball/Softball Opening Weekend at Laphams Mills Park today. Rain forced the cancellation of last night’s games, but several games were rescheduled for today.

Today also marks the official beginning of the Peru Youth Commission’s baseball/softball program for over 200 Peru boys and girls. Newly named Peru Youth Commission Chair Jennifer Madore was working with the young people staffing the food and beverage building. Madore has been a Youth Commission member for five years. Assuming a leadership role was a natural step for her. She explained, “I’ve been doing a lot anyway, so this just another way of helping the kids and the great programs we have here in Peru.” Along with support from the Town of Peru, numerous volunteers, 20 to 25 recreational assistants and monetary donations from Peru’s business and non-profit community all play a role in making the programs successful. Today Dunkin Donuts and Valley Vending donated donuts and beverages for sale at the concession building.

PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Strand Center for the Arts is excited to announce, The Glenn Miller Orchestra will be performing at the Strand Center Theatre at 25 Brinkerhoff Street, Plattsburgh. Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 7 p.m.

Glenn Miller disappeared on December 15, 1944. The bandleader went down over the English Channel on a flight from London to Paris at the height of his popularity. Over sixty years since the public first embraced the successful Miller Sound, both the legend and the music live on. Still considered the greatest band of all time, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most sought after big band in the world. The orchestra has performed in all 50 United States, as well as throughout Europe, Australia, Iceland, New Zealand, Guam, the Philippines, South and Central America. In 1941, Glenn Miller’s recording of Chattanooga Choo Choo received the first Gold Record ever to be awarded. It is now more than 75 years since Glenn Miller first succeeded with the Orchestra, which still bears his name until this day. Except for a few years following his disappearance, Glenn’s orchestra and music have been heard around the world continuously since 1938.

This one-night-only show will be at the Strand Center Theatre at 25 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh on July 21, 2018 at 7 p.m. Tickets prices vary, $20-$40. The Strand Center for the Arts’ member discount applies.  The prices for all tickets increase $5 on the day of the show. All ticket sales, including service fees, are final and non-refundable.

The regular meeting of the Peru Town Board was held on Monday, May 14, 2018 at the Peru Town Hall.  Those present were Mr. Brandy McDonald Supervisor; Mr. James Douglass, Councilman; Mr. James Langley, Councilman; Mr. Melvin Irwin, Councilman; Mr. Matthew Favro, Town Attorney; Mrs. Dianne Miller, Town Clerk.  Also present were Mr. Courtney Tetrault, Water/Sewer Superintendent; Mr. Michael Farrell, Highway Superintendent; Mr. Bob Guynup, Zoning Officer; Mr.  James Kirby, Town Justice; Ms. Pamela Barber, Confidential Secretary to the Board; and Mr. Dave Drollette, Dog Control officer

The meeting was called to order at 7:01 PM by Mr. McDonald, with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Bear Swamp Lift Station Update

Mr. Tetrault received quote for the repair of the Bear Swamp Lift. The quote received by Emerick Associates was for $ 18,775.00 with an additionial $5000.00 to upgrade electrical 

control panel and wiring not to exceed $25,000.00.

Motion by Mr. Langley seconded by Mr. Douglass to authorize Mr. Tetrault to have Bear Swamp Lift repaired.

May 5 Wind Storm Update

Mr.Farrell stated our area was one of the hardest hit. Many poles, wires and trees were brought down by the wind. Excellent command  center was set up by Greg Timmons.Mr. Farrell and Mr. McDonald  were out assessing the damage thru out the night. Seven roads had trees down on them,the highway department made sure roads  were open & safe for school buses. Mr. Farrell is filing a FEMA report  for the added expense of labor and clean up due to the wind storm. Mr. Tetrault  stated that it was also a long weekend dealing with water issues.

Logics Software Update

Ms. Barber stated May 8 and May 9 2018  training was administered by Logics trainer and account representative. All data has been transferred from KVS to Logics. Bank reconciliation 

will no longer be done manually  but still monitored as it will be done automatically.

The system will be on line and  live June 4, 2018.

Mr. Tetrault stated Maiden Lane was having pump issues. Two mowers have broken down and the fire district has let the department borrow yhier mowers. A 3A certification is needed for DEC.

Mr. Guynup stated a building permit was needed for any repair to roofs. Five items are on the agenda for the next planning board meeting. Washington Street Development has begun. Dean Lashway is the surveyor.

Mr. Drollette stated 3 more dog bites and trial next week.

Mr. Kirby stated a few shingles off the court house and bus turn around sign up was damage from windstorm.

Mr. McDonald stated many shingles missing from Town Hall from windstorm. Thank you comments  from Mr. Schiffler & Mr. and Mrs. Tarbox on a job well done by Mr. Farrell and Mr. Tetraults crew during  the windstorm and  the involvement of Mr. Mcdonald as written in the thank you correspondences.

Mr. Langley asked which roads were being  repaired. Mr. Farrell stated Patent Road,School Street and bottom of Ormsby Circle. 

Solar System Replica Presentation By PCSD Science Students

PCSD Science Students presented a video of the solar system to be placed along The Little Ausable Trail. The students explained the model and asked for permission to exhibit the model.

“Official Statement regarding our July 2018 scheduled Mission trip: 

Over the past few weeks, we have been closely monitoring the situation in Nicaragua.  We have consulted with our personnel on the ground in Nicaragua, other NGO’s and partners who serve in Nicaragua, reviewing news articles that are available on the situation, and using social media to obtain “on the spot” developments. 

The Mission of Hope has reluctantly decided that we must cancel our July Mission trip.  Out of an abundance of caution, we find it necessary to make this decision.  We have consistently indicated that above all, we will do all within our power, as always, to secure the safety of our travelers.  (We understand that you, our July travelers, have been planning and looking forward to the trip and that we share in your disappointment and frustration etc.)  

We have also determined that, at this time, it would not be prudent to put added stress or responsibility on our personnel in Nicaragua, especially at a time when the situation changes rapidly.  We want to insure that they, too, are focused on the care and security of their families as well as their responsibilities for the Mission of Hope’s programs and projects to serve the poor. 

We remain firmly and passionately committed to serving the poor and marginalized and know that once the political and social situation in Nicaragua, is resolved, our projects and programs will be needed more than ever.  In the interim, we will continue to coordinate our efforts with our Nicaraguan staff, for the benefit of the most marginalized in Nicaragua.  We are counting on your continued prayers and support (time, talent, treasure) to assist us in serving those in need.
