The North Country Has a New Eagle Scout

DSC08796 DSC08802

By John T. Ryan

Peru – James Hilchey joined the Boy Scouts at age 12. Tonight, at age 18, he became an Eagle Scout in ceremonies conducted at St. Augustine’s Parish Center. The son of Jennifer Reyell-Cameron and Christopher Hilchey, James will be a senior at Saranac High School this fall. Peru Troop 8049 Scout Master Fred Tuller complimented Hilchey saying, “James has grown a lot. He’s become a good role model for upcoming scouts.”

Eagle Scout candidates must satisfy numerous requirements including planning, developing, and giving leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or their community. Hilchey concentrated on Baker Cemetery in Morrisonville by leading a graveyard cleanup, a cemetery mapping and constructing a cemetery sign-in box.

Tonight he thanked others saying, “I couldn’t have completed the project without the help of others.” He mentioned his grandparents Craig and Lynn Hilchey, Eric Hidook, Richard Mason Jr. and Richard Mason Sr., D.J, and Sam Trombley.

The Boy Scouts have many requirements to achieve their highest rank of Eagle Scout. They include:

1.Be active in your troop for at least six months as a Life Scout.

2. As a Life Scout, demonstrate Scout Spirit by living the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Tell how you have done your duty to God, how you have lived the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your everyday life, and how your understanding of the Scout Oath and Scout Law will guide your life in the future. List on your Eagle Scout Rank Application the names of individuals who know you personally and would be willing to provide a recommendation on your behalf, including parents/guardians, religious (if not affiliated with an organized religion, then
the parent or guardian provides this reference), educational, employer (if employed), and two other references.

3. Earn a total of 21 merit badges Read more »

A Favorite Stop Changes Hands

Jeanne and Tim Arnold

Jeanne and Tim Arnold

By John T. Ryan

Peru – April 28, 2017 was the beginning of a new life adventure for Jeanne and Tim Arnold when they opened Sweet Treat as its new owners. As they commented on Facebook, “After a break of six years we are back. We can’t wait to see our old friends and meet some new ones. A big thanks to Rick and Debi Lajti for turning over the reins of their business to us. They will be a hard act to follow – so bare with us newbies! – we shall do our best.” Many people know the Peru natives as the former owners and operators of Iroquois Campsite and RV Park. They sold that business in 2011 and moved to Florida.

Sweet Treat’s opening usually coincides with longer days and warm weather. This year the almost daily rain wasn’t the ideal weather to sell ice cream, but it gave Jeanne and Tim a less frantic pace to break into the business. The returning staff members became their instructors. Jeanne remarked, “The kids have been a godsend. They have taught us a lot. They’re our biggest asset.”

There have been some surprises. Jeanne said, “I never realized people like chocolate so much and the variety of things people like. I had a banana split order one day that had three different flavors and three different toppings.”

New business owners always like to make some changes and the Arnolds are no exception. They’ve purchased a flavor burst machine that makes eight new soft ice cream flavors. There’s a new planter-bench out front, a new flagpole has been installed and a new sign will be erected. Sweet Treat is open seven days a week from noon until 9 p.m.

Ironically Sweet Treat is located near the Route 22-Bear Swamp Rd. intersection where Jeanne’s parents, Joe and Cynthia Ondrek, operated Jeanne’s Dairy Bar in the mid-60’s. After four years they sold the dairy bar to Doris and Loyal Burdo and opened Iroquois Campground and RV Park further down the Bear Swamp Rd. Tim and Jeanne purchased the family business in 1999 and operated it until 2011.

Knights Support the Peru Food Shelf

DSC07949

JCEO Peru Outreach Coordinator Betty Ero and St. Augustine’s Knights of Columbus Council 7273 Grand Knight Keith Kemp

Peru – St. Augustine’s Knights of Columbus Council 7273 recently assisted the Peru JCEO Food Shelf by conducting a “40 Cans For Lent” program at St. Augustine’s Church. The knights asked parishioners to contribute food during the 46 days of Lent. They generously responded with 1,057 pounds of nutritious food. The council followed up with a $500 donation. The combined donations will earn $200 in matching funds from the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council.

Since 2012, Knights of Columbus councils have donated over $8.5 million and 14.7 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens.

A Great Idea Is Almost Realized

GordyA message from Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman

Early this year the Towns of Plattsburgh and Town of Schuyler Falls NY passed a joint resolution asking Senator Betty Little and Assemblyman D. Billy Jones to sponsor legislation to name the NYS RT 22B Morrisonville Bridge after North Country Legend Gordie Little. Senator Little successfully got the NYS Senate to pass the legislation. We just got word Assemblyman Jones was successful in getting the NYS Assembly to pass the same. A special thank you to our two representatives for working so hard on this. It now goes on to Governor Cuomo for his signature. We will keep people updated.

Tri-County ARTSMAP project is underway in Clinton, Essex, and Franklin Counties

arts-map-logo-final-alt

The Strand Center for the Arts, in partnership with SUNY Plattsburgh, is conducting an Arts and Cultural Asset Mapping Project to create a web-based interactive map of the region’s artists, artisans and cultural organization. Information surveys are available at ARTSMAP.net. All individuals and organizations with arts and cultural activities in Clinton, Essex and Franklin Counties of New York are encouraged to participate.

“The Strand Center for the Arts is excited to continue to strengthen our collaborative partnership with SUNY Plattsburgh in facilitating the creation of the Tri-County ARTSMAP. This will not only serve as an invaluable resource for SUNY Plattsburgh and the Strand Center, aiding us to obtain grant funding for arts initiatives, but also for all of the artists, artisans and tradition bearers in our region.”

– Joshua Kretser, Executive Director, Strand Center for the Arts

The Tri-County ARTSMAP and database will help to expand regional arts and cultural programming by linking together our community of artists, artisans, and tradition bearers, promoting greater awareness of regional arts and cultural activities, and leveraging the role that arts and culture play in attracting and retaining visitors, businesses, and residents, while promoting economic vitality in the region.

The data base will enable social network analysis of the arts and cultural community, reveal both strengths and gaps in the community’s resource and support system, and provide essential baseline information for a future regional Arts and Cultural Master Plan.

The project is funded by a grant from New York State Council on the Arts, managed by Premises Architecture PLLC, and supported by the City of Plattsburgh and North Country Chamber of Commerce. For information, visit ARTSMAP.net or contact artsmap.net@gmail.com
