Owls Head Trail Closed on Weekends

Effective immediately the trail to the summit of Owls Head in the town of Keene in the Adirondacks is closed to public access and use on weekends.

The trailhead and all but the last 0.1 mile of the trail are located on private lands. The large number of vehicles parked on the private road during the Memorial Day weekend blocked access for private landowners, and now the landowners are prohibiting the public to park on the private road between 4 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Monday and have posted signs along the road reflecting this decision.

The trail to the summit of Owls Head is not an official DEC trail nor does DEC have an easement for public use on the trail – the landowner has allowed the public to use the trail. However, the landowner has informed DEC the trail will be closed for public use at the end of this hiking season.

DEC is in the process of identifying an alternate trail route on Forest Preserve lands from the Molly Nye Road on the opposite side of the mountain, and will pursue an amendment to the High Peaks Wilderness Unit Management Plan which would be necessary to facilitate construction of a new trailhead and trail.

Bridge Construction to Begin on Monday

IMG_4959 IMG_4965

By John T. Ryan

Peru – On Monday, June 12, 2017, motorists will find the Jarvis Road closed to thru-traffic as construction crews begin replacement of the bridge adjacent to the Irwin’s Maple Grand Farm. Clinton County Highway Superintendent Al Rascoe said the project is expected to take approximately 90 days. New Century Construction of Watervliet, NY submitted the low bid of $765,000.

Rascoe said that the existing bridge is about 60 years old. Inspection reports indicate its footing has been gradually undermined by the Little Ausable River. The new bridge will meet the latest design standards and can be expected to last about 70 to 75 years. Rascoe said, “We’re trying to be proactive, so we’re replacing the bridge.”

Hundreds of motorists travel via the Jarvis Road daily including many correction officers living in Keeseville and Ausable Forks. Nearby Adirondack Farms will be heavily impacted because its trucks and machines travel to fields along the Military Turnpike and other nearby roads. Co-owner Jon Rulfs said, “It’s not our preference, but we’ll be traveling on Route 22 to the Military Turnpike as we harvest our forage crops. Fortunately, we moved most of our manure this spring. We’ll try to use the River Road as much as we can.”

State Senate Approves Measure to Raise ‘PANS’ Awareness

From the Office of State Senator Betty Little
Would help combat neuropsychiatric syndrome affecting children

The State Senate today gave final legislative approval of legislation (S5750) sponsored by Senator Betty Little to raise awareness of pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome, known as PANS.

“PANS attacks the brain. It comes on quickly and can be challenging to diagnose,” said Little. “Developing a better understanding of the syndrome and what to look for to ensure the right diagnosis is made quickly will no doubt assure better results for children, including adolescents.”

The legislation directs the New York State Department of Health to include PANS in its Health Care and Wellness Education and Outreach Program. An advisory council comprising representatives of people with PANS, including family members, and health care providers who specialize in treating the syndrome, would focus on increasing awareness and early detection of the illness through education.

PANS is a misdirected immune response, Read more »

Peru – When interviewed for a January 2015 Peru Gazette lifetime achievement story, longtime Peru resident Jack Lawliss answered the question: What is the best thing about living in Peru? He said, “The people! We have great people here. We have a lot of conveniences. I live a mile from the school, the church, the drugstore, the hardware store, the garage, the supermarket, the town hall and three restaurants. It’s a beautiful area geographically. I love it here.”

Over the next few weeks the Peru Gazette will be posting photos of some of the people Jack spoke about; the people who staff Peru businesses and institutions. Their smiles, general courtesy and professionalism are important in making Peru a great place to live.

Our first photo features the hardworking Stewart’s staff. Stewart’s Shops is an employee and family-owned convenience store chain with over 330 shops across upstate New York and southern Vermont. Stewart’s Shops is known for its milk, ice cream treats, coffee, grocery, gasoline and other convenience items. Peru’s shop is open 4:30am until midnight.

Clouds and light rain didn’t keep a huge group of parents, grandparents and others from attending this morning’s Peru Youth Commission and Clinton County Opening Day Ceremonies at Laphams Mills Park. Clinton County Youth Bureau Recreation Director Molly Flynn and teams from neighboring communities are participating in today’s activities.

Peru Youth Director John Flynn and Youth Commission Chairman Greg Mills thanked the many coaches and volunteers who make the Peru programs so successful. Flynn had special words of praise for Mike Madore who has volunteered countless hours over several years. Madore was given the honor of throwing the first pitch of the 2017 season.

Peru has over 200 youths participating in its 6-week Summer Activities Program which includes baseball softball, tennis, arts, crafts and summer soccer. Twenty youth are also hired to run each activity under the instruction of an adult supervisor.

Over 300 youths have registered for the Youth Commission’s Fall Soccer Program. More information on that program will be provided later in the year.
