IRVING, TX (04/26/2013)(readMedia)– Rachel Daly, a junior English major from Peru, New York, was among a contingent of University of Dallas students and campus ministers that traveled to New Orleans in March for this year’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB). While there, the group repainted crypts at a Catholic cemetery and worked at The Arc, a community center for people with mental and physical disabilities, and Capstone, an organization that fixes houses damaged by Hurricane Katrina. On Saturday, April 27^th, 2013 volunteers across Clinton, Franklin and Essex counties will lend their hand to the annual Day of Caring event hosted by United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc., North Country Regional Volunteer Center, Project H.E.L.P. at SUNY Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.  With the help of more than 400 volunteers from the three counties and students from Project H.E.L.P., over 70 projects will be completed.  Throughout the day volunteers will donate time to 15 non-profit organizations, 40 residential areas, 12 non-profit tourism attractions and 3 nursing homes. Kathy Snow, Director of Development of the Adirondack Region, Inc. stated “The Day of Caring is a tremendous opportunity for people through-out Clinton, Essex, and Franklin Counties to come together for friends and neighbors and to help maintain the unique quality of life in this area.”

Local residents who are unable to volunteer are still able to participate in the day by donating food.  Read more »

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 25, 2013) – Reps. Peter Welch and Bill Owens are urging the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to abandon a proposal to study whether fees should be assessed on passengers and pedestrians crossing into the United States at land crossings such as the ones in Vermont and New York.

In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Welch and Owens urge her to reject the proposal, which was included in the Department’s FY2014 budget request. “This is just a bad idea,” Welch and Owens said. “Border communities in Vermont and New York depend on cross border travel and commerce. The Department of Homeland Security should abandon this ill-advised study before it even begins.”
