Senator Little reappointed Chair of Cultural Affairs, Tourism Committee

bettyChief Judge Jonathan Lippman administers the oath of office to Senator Betty Little in the Senate Chamber in Albany on Wednesday, January 9, 2013.  Little represents the 45th District, comprising Warren, Essex, Franklin, Clinton and parts of St. Lawrence and Washington Counties.

State Senator Betty Little has been reappointed chair of the Senate Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee for the 2013-14 legislative session, a position she has held the past two years.

“I’m very happy to be reappointed given the tourism industry’s importance to the North Country economy,” said Little. “Governor Cuomo’s executive budget includes new funding for tourism promotion, which is great to see and I look forward to learning more about this proposal in an upcoming budget hearing.  New York’s diverse inventory of cultural, historical, natural and recreational assets is second to none.  Promoting them through paid advertising is costly but study after study shows that it’s an investment with a great return.”

Little has also been appointed to the following committees: Consumer Protection; Crime Victims, Crime and Correction; Education; Environmental Conservation; Finance; and Judiciary.

Owens: Time to get to work!

Plattsburgh – The House of Representatives today passed H.R. 325, the “No Budget, No Pay Act,” by a vote of 285 to 144.  The bill provides an additional four months to avoid a default on the national debt by temporarily lifting the cap on the “debt ceiling.”  Congressman Bill Owens supported the legislation to avoid a default, but called on Members of Congress to enact longer-term solutions.

“I supported today’s legislation because a default on the national debt would threaten America’s credit rating and the economic recovery,” said Owens.  “At the same time, Congress can’t keep kicking the can down the road.   With sequestration on the horizon and an unacceptable level of federal debt, Congress needs to chart a path towards responsible federal spending cuts right away that will inject long-term certainty into the economy for the benefit of businesses and middle class workers.”

H.R. 325 temporarily lifts the so-called debt ceiling, which governs how much the Treasury Department can borrow to meet federal obligations including military salaries, social security checks and similar payments.  Under the bill, the government may borrow as much as is required to continue financing government operations through May 19th of 2013.

In addition, the bill included language to withhold pay from Members of Congress in the event that a budget is not passed by each House of Congress by April 15th.

State Senator Betty Little comments on Gov. Cuomo’s proposed budget

“Governor Cuomo’s proposed budget is much of what I expected with a continued focus on the economy and a commitment to not increase taxes.  The less than two percent spending increase reflects the fact that revenues are still weak.  The good news is the size of this year’s budget deficit is much more manageable than the previous two indicating that our current budget has been fiscally responsible.

“The largest spending increases will be in education and health care.  I’ve heard from a lot of schools and know that this increase is very important for all of them.  To help them further, as well as local governments, we see more mandate relief.  I am pleased a number of measures are included in the proposal that will provide flexibility and some freedom from these state-imposed requirements.”  Read more »
