Peru will soon have another wonderful community asset

Rich Tarabula breaking ground on the community garden

By John T. Ryan

Peru should have its first community garden next summer, but it’s not located where most people would expect. On Saturday, November 3, 2012 several volunteers were enthusiastically tilling soil at the Peru Free Library. Librarian Becky Pace explained that she has been interested in starting a garden for some time, but she wanted to tie the project in with a library program.

The “forces” came together this summer when Pace learned that a Peru resident named Rich Tarabula was interested in establishing a community garden. Read more »

Assistance is on the way from Peru, NY to NJ

Peter Lake and Jackie Douglass

By John T. Ryan

(Updated 11/8/12) Peter Lake and Jackie Douglass were two of the Peru Community Church volunteers who have collected and packed non-perishable food to ship to Hurricane Sandy-ravaged Brick, New Jersey. Thanks to contributions of food and over $1,900 in cash from many generous people and the hard work of several volunteers, 43 large boxes of goods are being delivered to Brick, a community where many homes were destroyed and many people are suffering.

It didn’t take long for the Church’s Mission Committee to arrange the shipments. They asked for contributions on November 4th. On November 6th twenty-two boxes left Peru and twenty-one boxes left today, November 7th. St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Brick, N.J will arrange for distribution of the goods.

Peru’s voters are turning out big

Town of Peru Republican Chairman Donald McBrayer reported that as of 3:45 PM today (November 6, 2012) 1,700 people had cast ballots at the St. Augustine’s Parish Center. In 2008, the last presidential election year,  over 70% of Peru’s approximately 4,200 registered voters cast ballots. If the trend continues this year’s total should reach or surpass that amount.
