New Altar dedicated on Easter Sunday

L-R Carlo Amico, Rev. Alan Shnob, Doreen Amico

The tabernacle in St. Augustine’s Church is resting on a new Altar of Repose, which Father Alan Shnob dedicated on Easter Sunday at the 8 AM Mass. St. Augustine’s parishioner Carlo Amico handcrafted the Altar using local granite and wood.

St. Augustine’s parishioner Howard Plumadore began the process by cutting an oak tree that Father Shnob had found on the grounds of St. Patrick’s Oratory. Parishioner Donald Provost cut the wood into lumber at his local sawmill. Carlo Amico finished the oak lumber, purchased the polished green granite from an Ausable Forks quarry and handcrafted the Altar using wooden pegs rather than nails or screws.

Our neighbors of Polish descent celebrate swieconka

By John T. Ryan

A few years ago a few North Country people of Polish descent asked St. Augustine’s Pastor Father Alan Shnob to conduct a blessing of baskets known as swiecenie.  Father Shnob agreed to perform the blessing and the tradition has been continued. Conducted on Holy Saturday, the Eastern European tradition dates to the 15th century or earlier. The white linen that lines the baskets represents the shroud of Christ. The hard-cooked eggs represent new life or Christ rising from the tomb. The other foods also have symbolic meanings.  Every family member must have a bite of all the blessed foods after Mass on Easter Sunday. Click here for more photos. -Public can now vote for finalists from Colton, Lorraine, Plattsburgh, and Potsdam

From the Office of Congressman Bill Owens

WASHINGTON – Congressman Bill Owens announced today that voting has begun for New Yorkers to choose the winner of his office’s 2012 Congressional Art Competition.  New Yorkers can visit http://owens.house.gov or go directly to the website’s voting page https://owensforms.house.gov/Forms/Form/Default.aspx?ID=1957 to choose among four finalists. Voting will be open through Thursday, May 3rd, and the winning artist will be announced the following day.  Artwork receiving the most votes will be displayed for one year as part of the national student art exhibition in the United States Capitol Building.

“This competition is a great opportunity for young New York artists to display their artistic gifts before a large national audience,” said Owens. “We have a tremendous amount of talent in the region, and I look forward to seeing a small part of the community displayed for millions in Washington.”

A reception will be held Wednesday, June 20th in Washington, D.C., honoring winners of the 2012 Congressional Art Competition.
